  1. St Enodoc, I have close coupled the tenders of all my B1s, V2s and J39s using the same process Tony has described although I am lazy.  I use a bolt, drill an undersize hole and screw the bolt in.  I have in front of me a B1 tender.  The gap to the back of my pin to the front of the "bulge" representing the proper connection is 5.2mm, or approx 6.85mm to the front of the tender chassis, or 11.4mm from the centre line of the bolt to the centreline of the tender hook mounting attachment.   My minimum mainline curve is 30" and I use Peco minimum radius points with no problems.

  2. Congratulations Mallard.  Under similar but different circumstances I walked and it was the best thing I ever did.  Lots of time for the MR and motorcycling.  I think there is a potential PhD subject looking at just how many older folks have been "pushed" out.  Back to PN, loved that arial shot.

  3. As I remember, as soon as the train started moving it was OK to sell alcohol.  It was also OK if the rain stopped for a signal or whatever outside a station.  I am not sure of it could be served when the train was stationary but within local licened hours

  4. Sorry folks, got finger hit post button without reading through what I had typed.  What I meant to say was it would be nice to see some Gresley or Thompson coaches in their teak finish but with BR (as opposed to LNER) running numbers.  I am not sure about Thompson coaches but I can clearly remember seeing Gresley coaches still in very dirty "teak" finish on the Grimsby to Peterborough (London) trains as they came through Waltham.  I also remember seeing articulated coaches on the same trains but I cannot remember if they were in Blood and Custard.   Note I did get a couple of Hornby Gresleys with BR running numbers through the deals on the Olympic sets.  Anyone want an N2 since it was the coaches I was after.

  5. Ditto on good to see we are back to modelling.  Would be nice to see either Thompson or Gresleys in teak 9as opposed to LNER.  Was also wondering what happened to the promised DVD on the "new" Over Peover.  The old one was pretty good but a new one showing the expansion would be terrific.

  6. You all probably know this but I won't assume it, hence the post.  When i worked at a certain facility they used swifter cloths to pick up small (some very small) errant particles of nasty stuff.  I figured if it was good enough for that it was good enough for my train set.  And Yes they do a heck of a job of getting rid of even the finest of dust particles.  Note I do happen to live in the GWN but i assume you can get them over your side of the pond.

  7. I would say that your Gresleys look pretty good.  When looking from anything more that a foot away I would suggest that your weathering and the general Gresley shape will hide the lack of tumblehome.

  8. Tony, please don't take this the wrong way, but I for one do not give a hoot about all the technical details (I know I know)?  In fact pretty well all I do is scan through to look at the (ER) modelling pictures, which as an ex-pat who cannot get to MR shows values greatly

  9. Don't you have stud finders over there (no funny answers please)?  FYI, It is a device that uses what i suspect is a cheap Eddy Current Probe.  Over hear in the GWN pretty well all our houses are build using a wooden stud system and when installing a fitting you always find and attach to a stud.

  10. Hi Gilbert,  Essentially I made my statement based on my own memories.  I used to work at the Grimsby Docks Bch of the then National Provincial Bank and I can remember seeing fish trains coming out of the docks and entering the main line somewhere just before the infamous Cleethorpes Rd level crossing (replaced by an overpass eventually) down past the old Midland Bank and the Royal Dock Hotel.  In addition to the King and Hewins book, which is very useful, I have Railways of Lincolnshire  and in it just as you say there is a reference to "long running Banbury fish train" picking up is load at New Clee Sidings so your roster book is correct

  11. Tonys picture of Peterborough north is rather interesting in that it appears to show a least some of the overall roof without the lovers on, much as was the case at Grimsby and other area stations.  I wonder if the louvres were off for repair or whatever.

  12. Jason, you have a potential future building doll house furniture.  Seriously my wife wanted a "bench"  for a decorative doll she had.  I could not believe the prices they want for these things and the availability in Canada as judged by a web search.  Next step is to get a 3d printer

  13. On the subject of fastening vehicles down I have recently watched to videos that show new cars on bogie bolster wagons (with the bolsters removed) and on one i was able to magnify the image.  In this case it looks as though there is nothing holding the cars in place except themselves - by their brakes I assume

  14. Re my post 797, I have posted a sort of picture show of how I upgraded my split chassis V2 Cartazzi axle box  on a new post "V2 Cartazzi Up-grade"   (Didn't feel it was appropriate to put here).  Along with close coupling the tender and a couple of other mods it doesn't look to bad

  15. Depending on the track radius you are using it is very easy to make a "fixed" Cartazi truck using plasticard and glue on axles boxes attached to springs.  All you do is carve away pretty well all the side metal on the floating  as supplied truck and hide it behind a dummy set of side walls, axle box and springs.  I am pretty certain it has been covered on this forum but I think i have some pictures somewhere that I can post of there is any interest.  Lierally about a 2 hour job and it makes a heck of a difference.

  16. For the lomac wheels I just went to my NA supplier and after measuring a couple of sets to get the correct diameter I bought a pack of 8 or 10.  For additional weight i made a thin sheet from Pb and glued it to the bottom of the lomac.  From most angles it is not visible.  Re chains, I came across a picture where all that they appeared to have used were wedge blocks for a tractor.
