  1. I have two these. One is an assembled shell waiting for a chassis. The other has the original whitemetal chassis with a Tri-ang X04, old technology but utterly reliable and easily replaced should the need arise. The X04 drives on the rear axle and doesn't intrude into the cab. The kit makes up into a good representation of the locomotive but reference to photographs is recommended. The RCTS series "Locomotives of the LNER", volume 8A contains lots of information. As mentioned above, the K's motor is a nightmare.
  2. You may have a point Mike. The pile goes down very slowly even though I've retired.
  3. I have been using the yellow capped version with the brush but I've found it has a limited shelf life and goes very thick. I won't be buying it again.
  4. My shed is insulated with polystyrene around the walls and ceiling clad with hardboard. Recently I have also added silver foil backed sheets to the roof, Apart from an attack by rodents chewing through a corner of the floor a couple of years ago there have been no problems. Originally I double glazed the windows but, since I usually had the lights on anyway, I removed the windows altogether. Apart from removing a potential source of leaks, it also makes the shed more secure.

I acquired my model yesterday and I'm very pleased with it. It really looks the part a the head of a rake of Hornby Gresley non-corridor coaches. I will definitely be shortening the couplings a shown above. Apart from that, I'll leave it as it is.
  6. Having read all the above, I recently retrieved an Airfix tank wagon that I built decades ago from its storage (the original kit box). It has been in a shed for years with all the expected temperature variations, I half expected it to fall apart but it's as sound as the day it was built.
  7. Mine are to be used on fairly old Tri-ang bogie bolsters. The body moulding is actually quite good so, with new bogies, they can hold their own on my layout.
  8. Thank you both for your replies. I can get on with the job now
  9. I'm in the process of assembling some Ratio diamond framed wagon bogies and I would like to replace the plastic wheels with metal ones. They need to be spoked, around 10 or 11mm and with pinpoint axles. Can anyone suggest a supplier?
  10. I've seen one of these built with corrected domes and it looked very convincing although, as stated above, it's not 4mm scale.
  11. You could try contacting the Soar Valley Model Railway Club (they have a website, www.svmrc.co.uk). They may be able to point you in the right direction.
  12. Hornby do a set (or, at least they did). If you should happen to find a set, be aware that the red triangle on the halt at major road ahead sign, is upside down! A simple fix if a little fiddly.
  13. Long Buckby in Northamptonshire I believe is still wooden.
  14. Sorry to be pedantic but can I point out that the Singer is a Dublo Dinky not a Dinky Dublo.
  15. You could try betterbymiles.biz. I haven't used him myself but I've heard good reports.
  16. Those old 1/2 HD motors, like the Tri-ang X04 ,if properly lubricated and with clean commutators, will run reliably for years. I have a couple of R1's which can sit in a drawer for ages and will then run perfectly when placed on the track.
  17. It shouldn't be too difficult to splice two kits together to make it suitable for double track. As it happens I have two going begging!
  18. I think to describe the Hornby 31 as crap is a little harsh. I had a problem with a B12 some while ago and it was replaced without any problems, The replacement works perfectly. Just because there is a problem with one product it doesn't mean that they are all faulty.
  19. That's a very odd looking vehicle, obviously cobbled together from the parts bin!
  20. If you have no luck finding one, I'm sure I've got one somewhere
  21. When this model was introduced, there was some discussion about other 2-4-2T classes. Could some kind soul please measure the wheelbase and put the dimensions on here please?

`I still have a few of the original models. They've been sitting in a drawer for years and I'd almost forgotten them. With a little careful repainting they don't look too bad.
  23. If you're thinking of double deckers, the easiest solution is to glue the decks back together after fitting the passengers. Personally, i use pva as it doesn't damage paint or cloud glazing, It's also fairly simple to take the bus apart again if required. I recommend you use H0 scale figures as there isn't a lot of room inside some models. As for taking them apart, methods vary according to the method of manufacture. Oxford and EFE are usually OK but some Corgi models can be difficult.
  24. The bearings from ebay duly arrived. In the meantime I discovered that I already had two packs of Romford bearings. (Clearly I should have checked earlier!). The ebay ones are exactly the same so I am now well stocked.
  25. Thank you for all the replies. I've opted for those on Ebay.
