  1. you mean ‘Great British Celebrity Little Train Brother’ to give it its full title? Just need to decide who will host it…
  2. I was under the impression these were used to haul the rail guns in Kent due to their lack of smoke. I’m standing by to be corrected though.
  3. Hooray! Waiting for the first batch to be announced and including 93257 Maj. Gen. Carl R. Gray of the Longmoor Military Railway- arguably the last in the U.K. to do what it was built for- whatever the army told it to do!
  4. While the discussion on colours is considered of high importance by many, does anyone have any ideas on rolling stock while we wait for Hattons or Hornby to release generic stock? I’ve see these online- http://www.poppyswoodtech.co.uk/4mm.html Butt none Finished. Are there any producers of NER rolling stock that don’t involve brass?
  5. That fails into account how the US government spends its money at a state level. FEMA assist in long term preparation and some response, mitigating impacts of a crisis might sit at a state level and FEMA may need to be invited to support. Also, that much money over 30 years isn’t that much for a branch of the US Government
  6. There’s nothing wrong with prepping, as long as you know what you’re primarily prepping for and can transfer preparation for your main event onto others. I think the most important place to kwep your preparation is between your ears- advanced first aid (AED and medical cases usage), advanced car mechanics and advanced use of a map and compass are all highly under-rated skills. I applied first aid to a moped rider who had been knocked off this week- not only did the others helping think I was a doctor (having done a secondary survey and diagnosed a dislocated knee), but the paramedic thought I was one of their own based on my handover! What greater compliment is there for a first aider… Unless you live in a flooding zone, the best prepping you can do is for a major power outage. Wind-up radios are good for listening to radio 4, though your car will work for a while too as long as it isn’t electric! (Cold) drinking water would probably keep running as would gas, you’d need to scoff everything in your fridge after 24 hours though, freezers would last 72 hours if you never opened the door. All that said, the UK’s grid is considered extremely resilient by international standards. The most likely personal risk in an outage is running out of medication, so two weeks worth in reserve would always be wise. The loo roll shortage in Covid is often given as an example of mass hysteria but is completely mislabelled. It originated in Australia when their domestic loo roll production halted due to lack of resources, but the IK was never at risk.
  7. While the Penrhyn ladies with tenders are a logical next step, I’d expect Bachmann to do Russell first. It exists for a start which makes scanning easier and has a much longer history than the NGG16’s, and is approaching an anniversary (100th birthday of I’m not mistaken?). It could also go with the Peco stock across a variety of timescales. Bachmann seem to have checked out of doing their own steam- I’m struggling to think of their last OO model which wasn’t done for Rails or others
  8. I found this in an antiques barn this weekend, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it before. The track slots together like narrow skalextric track, the unit had wheels on alternating sections with the flanges on the outside and copper rails to pick up power from the thin conducting rails. Has anyone here used this or integrated it into a layout? If I collected modern OO I’d be integrating an airport transfer system using one of these!
  9. I read he had the honour of being the first character in Star Wars to say ‘sh*t’ on screen…
  10. While these coaches do look great, I’d rather wait for the set in Maunsell green as that will go with the rest of my collection. However, I’d rather the set was released as a 3 coach set sooner then give the option of buying the 4th coach separately- while this might not be strictly accurate 3 Bachman coaches is both easier for my wallet and layout to handle than 4.
  11. Does this mean that the big hunslets will beat the little hunslets to the market? They seem to have gone very quiet despite some advanced samples being shown
  12. Ireland was part of the U.K. for even longer (Viking Co-rule, Normans, Plantagenets, Cromwell, William of Orange, delete as you see fit) until 1922. I Don’t recall historic ownership of somewhere with a completely different ethnic make-up being grounds for invading somewhere…
  13. The issue is that while a lot of reporting about the future London Bridge was correct when it was printed (and I shared the guardian article with colleagues rather than official documentation on some occasions as a helpful overview), the plans were massively revised into a number of potential options during Covid which weren’t widely shared. Plan A for DofE for example (Forth Bridge) looked more like QEQM’s funeral (Tay Bridge) but what took place was actually a relaxation of the most severe Covid plan. I believe it was while these modifications were being implemented that the train was removed from both their plans and never reinstated.
  14. What that doesn’t factor in is the fact that the royal 67’s (and any steam engines brought in for the day) wouldn’t require OHLE anyway so would be unaffected… On another point, I was told by the train staff and police that the coffin would have been carried in one of the Mk2’s, not convinced they liked the blinds being open in the ‘principle’ carriages.
  15. I was lucky enough to go onboard the Royal Train while it waited for its principle several years ago. The aspect which isn’t much spoken about in public (but should be appreciated here) is that it is reconfigurable- a day trip by the Queen could see different carriages used by PoW going overnight to Scotland. Being predominantly 67 hauled it has high route availability so can pull into local stations or a city centre whereas a plane can only land at an airport or a convenient RAF base (that said, those who aren’t afraid of them do use helicopters). A future royal train needs to be easily divisible so you aren’t lugging around sleeper carriages for day trips etc, with a light enough axle-load to get around all the routes, with a couple of locos at each end for redundancy. Without going into details, there is a lot more to the current train than meets the eye, and I’m sure a fleet of Mark 5’s or re-bogied Mk 3’s would keep the service going. The unknown aspect is whether HMK will be willing to splash out on a new train or just to retire the old one without replacement.
  16. Why did the scarecrow win the Nobel prize? Because the committee considered his work to be outstanding in his field! Why couldn’t the ice cream man work after he pranged his ice cream van? Because he was suffering from Mr Whippy-lash!
  17. I see from EBay that Bachman USA have now introduced Peter Sam to the range, which means that it is now possible to model Tallylyn, Corris, or any of the other industrial users of the Falcon design! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134166986396?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Ruw6B9AbRRm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=J_hw70rPREq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Makes you wonder, when they’ve released Tom Rolt where they will go next. The Snowdon Mountain Railway perhaps?
  18. Are Hornby going to release a new Rocket set for the current day with high-via clad figures on the footplate?
  19. Jo I think just to complicate things we need to identify a third body of influence here- the Hattons/ Kernow/ Rails/ TMC (plus others) band of model shops which have commissioned some excellent models independently of either the big boys or the new kids. They have the flexibility to do it all independently (Hattons Barclays or P class), partner up with the big ones on a new range (Hattons + Bachman for the 812, Rails + Heljan for the NER autocar) or the new guys (Planet industrials and Rails for the Victory) and arrive with the brand recognition from customers who buy their BDHH products. Curiously, I feel like these ones focus on older prototypes with more heritage, while the ARCS+ focus on more modern diesel and electric, but I’ll admit there are plenty of exceptions.
  20. Especially given that the army had green as well as blue examples, which we’re used at a few other military railways
  21. For anyone into podcasts I can highly recommend this one: the story of fat Leonard and his hold over the pacific fleet is a fascinating story, as demonstrated by the fact that over 60 USN admirals were reprimanded following its discovery. It really demonstrates what happens when the centre says ‘just make it happen’ to some very pro-active people who aren’t asked to account for their actions…
  22. Small groups are quite normal in customer research, it’s called ‘qual’ where the results are qualitative, rather than ‘quant’ where the results are quantitative/ % based. From my experience I’d expect this to be a chance for the thoughts of the contributors to be sent straight up Hornby’s chain of command, for that reason I’ve signed up.
  23. I’ll be sending an email later once I’ve checked which I have. What transfers are in a pack? does this mean that the NER snowplough will be following behind this?
  24. Or go all out with a visiting warship. https://fleetscale.com/store/gb/109-semi-kits-?id_category=109&n=38 annoyingly their tug and ‘small ships’ aren’t available in 1:72
  25. I find it curious that Bachman have followed two different release strategies for OO9- the ‘early announcement and incremental progress updates’ model for the quarry hunsletts, and the ‘rabbit out of the hat’ approach for the double Fairlie. They resisted the urge to make the announcement when Kato did theirs, as Hornby did with their Lion, and instead waited until models were a month away from hitting the shops. All they really need is a glossy finish and footplate crew- they look a little odd with no-one on the tiny footplate!
