  1. Evans seemed to be (badly) imitating clarkson for most of the show, and sounded flat and dull for any voiceovers. The audience appeared bored (I don't blame them). As for the interaction between Evans and Leblanc, very poor. Evans just seemed to want to shout over the latter. A shame they didn't just go for some unknowns, as the challenges wernt bad. My wife fell asleep half way through after complaing about Evans for the first half...
  2. That is the intention with my 52xx when I get on and paint it. (Having came as a non painted sample from eBay...) For a 72xx, Rob's in post war green is perfect
  3. If I remember rightly some of the parkside range originally was the kirk kits, so I assume very similar (just the parkside kit has done more modern refinements.

  6. Not sure if this had been posted before, but I'm sure some Brent readers might find it interesting. While looking for photos of Star’s the other day, I came across this series of articles on the Exeter local paper’s website, detailing the authors experiences following the GWR in the 1940s based in Newton Abbot. There are a few interesting observations (including notes of a least one pannier which received GWR black livery), and one photo per article (again a number of which are wartime or immediately post war) Unfortunately not all weeks have the authors name in the title (and I haven’t found any index) but the majority can be found by searching for Peter Gray http://www.exeterexpressandecho.co.uk/search/search.html?searchType=&searchPhrase=peter+gray&where=&pageOffset=1
  7. How did you form the rest of the door detail not on the etch for the kitchen car?
  8. I have problems uploading the pictures as they are deemed too big - any ideas? If taken on an iPhone the easiest way is to email to yourself and select a size which is sub 1mb. If taken on a real camera, use software like ilfanview (I think it's called) or the risen resize tool (on the top bar of the forum) to resize. I think 1024 by 840 should reduce it to a small enough size. Project sounded interesting, used to drive under that viaduct most days when I was at school!

  10. I ordered transfers and nameplates in the last sale, arrived about a week and half later.
  11. Reading with interest About 20 years a go I picked up a very tatty blue Pullman (hand painted in a hybrid intercity / reverse blue grey livery) for the princely sum of 10£. And have now picked up enough additional coaches for a midland unit. My plan is to buy 2 more coaches to convert to kitchens and model the western Pullman instead.
  12. I know I've seen photos end of a Bristol Division B Set somewhere which clearly shows the letters. I will have a look and see what I can find. Will be interested to see how you get on, as I wouldn't mind a set myself......

  15. In that case an N class will have to do I guess, thanks for the info. Though a merchant navy may still end up stretching the modelles licence and buy one if i see one at the right price.....
  16. A blog is a good idea I think, the more GW coach modelling the better! Will be interested to see how you get on with your sunshine conversions. A sunshine break third, compo and diner would be very good, as would a first (as well as the third and break compo). I Guess that will always be the problem, a good range of Sunshine Stock would need to cover at least 5 or 6 variants.... Maybe drawing up some isn't such a bad idea... At any rate, for me the focus is on the quick wins for now, and the need to start building the layout...
  17. I sometimes think a nod to brent needs some sort of companion index, to give quick access to all the useful information buried within. I keep thinking about the Sunshine Stock, thats now 3 sunshine stock composites I require for formations I am currently working on. the big problem is that from above, (unless you go to a lot of trouble with archers rivet transfers) the Bachmann roof looks a lot more convincing to me with the roof detail modelled, even if it is 2mm too short. I keep wondering if its worth drawing up a slightly modified etched side, carefully spreading the missing length throughout the coach length to make it a direct match with the basic shell and roof from Mainline. Then common sense steps in and says as soon as I do it Bachmann will announce a retool of the ex mainline model to modern standards anyway.......
  18. I have a set of the fox plates upstairs for Tangmere, very expensive yes, but I guess they do come with shields ready made. I think the model masters plates were about £11 plus another £1.50 for the cab side transfers (very useful not having to buy a whole sheet for one loco.).

Finally got around to finishing my West Country, intended to eventually run with the formation in the 21c141 working Converted from the Hornby Torrington to 21c111 Tavistock (although I will admit in the world my layout exists in, the cab modifications had been completed on 21c111 by 1947...) Impressed with the Model Masters pack (containing the etched plates and transfers for the cab sides and front), the old numbers were removed with Microsol (red) and a cotton bud. just needs a coat of varnish, and some minor repairs. (and maybe something to fix that huge gap between the trailing wheel and the firebox!). Now I wonder if there are any photos of one of the Exmouth Junction Merchant Navy's on this working prior to the Hornby release.....
  20. Third time lucky typing this..... One of the more unusual workings on the South Devon mainline were the route familiar trips enabling Southern drivers to maintain their route knowledge in case of diversion. A search of the internet has come across two photos of West Country class locomotives on a Plymouth Exeter stopping service hauling GWR stock on these workings (https://mikemorant.s...ves/i-5j6kmMb/A). As ever RMWeb comes up trumps with the details (although they are somewhat lost within A Nod to Brent. First Mike Wiltshire confirmed the coach diagrams, with the first and last being D45/D46 70ft toplight break thirds, the second coach being a E158 Sunshine Stock composite and the third coach a C67 57ft Third. Kits from Frogmoor and Comet will eventually build the coaches. As for the loco, I picked up a Hornby Torrington off Ebay. There is a fair bit which needs to be done, first a couple of minor repairs (lamps, one tender step), before renumbering from BR condition to Tavistock in Southern. The previous owner had made it slightly easier for me, in that the unbranded tender had already been swapped for a Southern branded body. The next job to be tackled was the front end, First the BR number plate was carefully chopped off (Along with the top moulded lump that i guess is supposed to be a bracket for headcode disks.) A Modelmasters etched Southern smokebox disk was then glued in position, and the transfer for 21c111 was added to the front. Next onto preparing the sides, the Hornby numbers were removed using my usual method of Microsol Red and a cotton bud. i only had a tiny amount left, so it was a bit touch and go getting it all off. (There wasnt enough to remove the lining and renumber the Hall bought from the estate of the late Geoff Brewin to Eynsham Hall as I had originally planned, so that will have to wait until I get some more...) The original nameplates were removed with a sharp knife, one crest was a particular pain to remove. The replacement etches were then glued into position before adding the crests and new cab side numbers. Still need to do the couple of minor repairs previously mentioned, plus do something about that awful looking gap in the firebox. Now thinking about what to stick on the down working, I see there were plenty of Merchant Navy's at Exmouth Junction.......
  21. The latter photo is the one discussed a few pages back, including info on the coaches involved. Just received a package from model masters containing the name plates, smokebox plate and transfers to renunber mine to Tavistock.
  22. Thats the stuff, My thought is that this approach would avoid any shadow as the pole curves in at the back. (with the added benefit that you would still have an edge of the wall still showing.) I do think it can look very good when the backscene is connected to the foreground through the use of part relief trees, bushes etc (or telegraph poles). blends the whole scene rather well i think.
  23. I think it would only work if you could have the telegraph pole flush with the backscene, and bring the wall forward by a mm or two. Of course given there is a road behind the wall, the pole would be set back a reasonable distance behind the wall... If you did decide to go with adding the pole, my thought would be to make out of semi circular plastic rod (so you can make a half thickness pole.) this should still look like it is located behind the wall.
