  1. Southern electrics today at several locations all of which begin with S Swifts Green may sound an unusual location, it is actually the nearest place to a bridge on the line between Headorn and Ashford. I'll admit that I had to look that up this afternoon as when I first looked at the photos there i hadn't a clue where it is. The train details were taken from a copy of an SEG headcode publication, they may be correct. Sheerness Class 414 Sheerness to Sittingbourne May 77 J5713 Sittingbourne West Junction 2HAP 6061 Victoria to Faversham May 76 J5219 Swanley Class 414 6109 Gillingham to Victoria Nov 78 C4211 Swifts Green Class 423 7893 Ramsgate to Charing X May 76 J5179 Swifts Green Class 414 Charing X to Ashford May 76 J5180 That's a much younger me in the photo. 2. A visit to Tanum today. For those who are unsure of where it is this may help: Tanum is 143km from Gothenburg and 32 km from Stromstad. Stromstad is on the west coast of Sweden, just south of the border with Norway. Tanum is about halfway between Stromstad and Uddevalla. I'm sure that will make it clear. 3. I've enlarged the coach, probably more than is wise, does it help? Corbridge Class 37 up pw train July 83 C6096 David
  4. Northumberland ECML again today with Damdykes and Cramlington in the early 1980s. They are in order from south to north. The Damdykes photo is no longer possible, the only good view now is looking north from the eastern side of the line, which means standing in the field beyond the Citroen Dyane. 6. I agree about BR's daft policy - I could never understand why numbers were only at the left hand, it can hardly have saved much money. More annoying to me is that back in the late 80s I threw away some of my notebooks, thinking I had written them all up neatly in my catalogues - I had forgotten that I hadn't always put the numbers in, they didn't always seem important at the time. After all they were only photos of everyday locos, the locations were the most important thing to me then. I suspect it may a Gateshead loco - but it looks remarkably clean. David
  7. Thanks Andy, I think it could be a 105, mixed pairs were not unknown on the line, I think I've probably got another photo with such a pair somewhere. David
  8. Many thanks for all the comments about identifying locos, I am always pleased when there is discussion and eventual agreement (or whatever), as long as there is a realisation that I cannot always reply or correct captions as quickly as I would like. Today we visit the Newcastle Carlisle line again. I'm not sure what happened to the slide at Fourstones, it simply scanned very poorly - several times! There will be better images of other trains there in due course. I don't think anyone will work the numbers of the Class 101 near Bardon Mill. 9. We are going to leave Switzerland for now, though we will return in due course. In 1994 I took Mum and Dad to Sweden, as they would no longer drive abroad. Naturally I took railway photos (as did Dad) around the places we visited, which were in the west. It was an unusually hot summer there that year, some of the film suffered a bit in the heart in the car so some of the colours are a bit "off". We start at Gothenburg (Goteborg), which has both trams and trains to look at. We stayed in a hotel by the station which was useful. For some reason I didn't write down details of emu's in my slide catalogue and have managed to misplace my book on Swedish traction. If anyone can fill in the details I would appreciate it. 10. Perhaps it is time I talked about captions once again. I take the information, as many of you know, from the catalogues written by myself and Dad when our slides came back from the film processor. When we took photos we usually made a note of the place, loco class, train identity (if we knew it) and date - usually the month and year, sometimes the actual day of the month. If I had seen the loco number clearly when I took the photo I often wrote it down, Dad sometimes did. At any stage of captioning errors can occur. I may have written down the wrong place name, especially when visiting an unfamiliar location. There is also the problem in some places, where there is no nearby village or suitable railway location as to what to call a location. As for loco numbers if I know the number I include it, if I think it may be right I include it. Sometimes I copy the number from the catalogues without having a good think as to whether the number fits the appearance of the loco - headcode box type etc. If I am not reasonably sure I usually do not include the number in the caption. Fortunately there are a number of people here on RMWeb who give generously of their time in identifying locos and trains where I am unsure of them or have got them wrong. When these photos were taken working timetables were not available so both Dad and I had to try to work out what trains we thought we had seen by trying to estimate likely passing times of trains at our locations. Eventually I then change the captions. However, that can not always be done straight away. For various reasons my time is very limited at present, so I may quickly read a post and click "thanks" but simply do not have time to make alterations to captions straight away. I am afraid you will all have to be patient - and my lack of time will probably become worse not better over the coming months. David
  11. Thank you for taking the time to work out the most likely number. I know it has already been mentioned twice, and I had already acknowledged it was not 37258 in my post #10844. I had not altered the caption on the image in the original post as I did not have time to have another look in detail at the scan earlier this evening. David
  12. Again I think it will be a slide where Dad had tried to read the number off the slide having not made a note at the time - and if he did make a note at the time he may have got it wrong. I know how hard it is both to take a photo and read the number correctly as a train goes by. I have amended to caption to 45104?. David
  13. It's quite possible the number is wrong in Dad's notes - he often tried to take the number off the slide, it may be 370xx. I certainly can't read it on the scan. It's one of the problems of working on old photos - as all caption writers know. David
  14. Peaks on the Midland today with a few photos taken at Ratcliffe on Soar in the second half of the 1970s. Once again I'm not sure if all the train destinatyins/origins are correct. 16. Thanks very much for the details. I have checked dad's slide catalogue and that date would be right, it was one of the first photos he took that August. David
  17. Mark, Thanks once again. When I looked at the image I thought the notes saying it was from Hull seemed wrong. David
  18. Paul, I'm perfectly happy for you to post the relevant ones here. If you want a thread on them, which I think would be very useful, then I would suggest you put it in: Prototype: UK Prototype Discussions (not questions) . That is where my photo threads are placed. David

  21. The second set are photos again taken around Radcliffe on Trent which as usual is between Grantham and Nottingham. The dates range fro 1975 to 1978.
