  1. Thanks Mark. Why is it I can get steam loco classes right, many diesel locos right, even most emus right but I still cannot identify dmus? I actually quite like dmus and I've ridden on them often enough so I ought to recognise them. I've also photographed them a lot. David
  2. That's a nice new footbridge. When I was on holiday up there in the early 70s you just walked along the track. David
  3. Invershin to Culrain on the Highland Railway line from Inverness to Wick and Thurso is usually considered to be one of the shortest journeys on Network Rail. It takes one minute and costs around £1-17. By road the journey is 16 miles. I'm not sure if locals still walk across the viaduct between the two stations. David

  7. The 24th of August 1983 was a Wednesday, so I suspect I just turned up to have a look round. I had dad with me (and probably Mum) as he was recovering from a heart attack and couldn't drive at the time. I think I must have been visiting them while I was on holiday. As far as I can work out there was nothing happening on the day, neither mine nor Dad's photos have people in them and nothing seems to have been working. Dad knew some of the people there from his days at Sewstern, so he may have rung someone first to check we could go midweek. David

  11. Thanks once again Mark. As it is an April photo Dad may well have been on holiday, in which case the Whitemoor to Hitchin train would be right. I can't be certain as I didn't keep a diary then but it may have been the day Dad went to see an old friend (the farmer's son) he worked with on a farm near Cambridge during school holidays in the early part of the war. I remember Mum and I went with him and we were made most welcome. It's always interesting the memories that looking at old family photos can bring back. It was then that I realised why Dad knew quite a bit about working with heavy horses, as well as using traction engines on farms, especially the big ploughing engines. David

  13. I like the photos of the 1043s, thanks for posting them. Today we visit a railway museum near Munkedal, not far from Uddevalla. It had an emu and a shunter outside, inside there was a large collection of model railway items from Europe, including Britain. It was at Chateau Smarod, south of Mumnkedal. It closed in 2006 after a landslide caused a reconstruction of the E6 road, which now goes over the museum's site. If you look for it on Google there are various links, including the former owner's blog. It helps if you can read Swedish or German, though Google translate isn't too bad. There is also a photo taken near Frandefors. Enjoy finding the locations on a map! 14. Southern electrics today at several locations all of which begin with S Swifts Green may sound an unusual location, it is actually the nearest place to a bridge on the line between Headorn and Ashford. I'll admit that I had to look that up this afternoon as when I first looked at the photos there i hadn't a clue where it is. The train details were taken from a copy of an SEG headcode publication, they may be correct. 15. A visit to Tanum today. For those who are unsure of where it is this may help: Tanum is 143km from Gothenburg and 32 km from Stromstad. Stromstad is on the west coast of Sweden, just south of the border with Norway. Tanum is about halfway between Stromstad and Uddevalla. I'm sure that will make it clear. 17. Northumberland ECML again today with Damdykes and Cramlington in the early 1980s. They are in order from south to north. The Damdykes photo is no longer possible, the only good view now is looking north from the eastern side of the line, which means standing in the field beyond the Citroen Dyane. 19. I agree about BR's daft policy - I could never understand why numbers were only at the left hand, it can hardly have saved much money. More annoying to me is that back in the late 80s I threw away some of my notebooks, thinking I had written them all up neatly in my catalogues - I had forgotten that I hadn't always put the numbers in, they didn't always seem important at the time. After all they were only photos of everyday locos, the locations were the most important thing to me then. I suspect it may a Gateshead loco - but it looks remarkably clean. David
  20. Thanks Andy, I think it could be a 105, mixed pairs were not unknown on the line, I think I've probably got another photo with such a pair somewhere. David
  21. Many thanks for all the comments about identifying locos, I am always pleased when there is discussion and eventual agreement (or whatever), as long as there is a realisation that I cannot always reply or correct captions as quickly as I would like. Today we visit the Newcastle Carlisle line again. I'm not sure what happened to the slide at Fourstones, it simply scanned very poorly - several times! There will be better images of other trains there in due course. I don't think anyone will work the numbers of the Class 101 near Bardon Mill. 22. We are going to leave Switzerland for now, though we will return in due course. In 1994 I took Mum and Dad to Sweden, as they would no longer drive abroad. Naturally I took railway photos (as did Dad) around the places we visited, which were in the west. It was an unusually hot summer there that year, some of the film suffered a bit in the heart in the car so some of the colours are a bit "off". We start at Gothenburg (Goteborg), which has both trams and trains to look at. We stayed in a hotel by the station which was useful. For some reason I didn't write down details of emu's in my slide catalogue and have managed to misplace my book on Swedish traction. If anyone can fill in the details I would appreciate it.
