Whilst looking for something else (as usual) I came across a colour photo of a train of at least 30 Cawoods containers on Irishrail. 141 Class locos 156 + 168 at site of former Dromin Junction on the exGNRI main line. I've had a reply from a contact in Dublin: Hi Ernie I remember the yellow Cawoods 20ft containers well, but the traffic only ran for a short period, the coal came in thru Greenore Port, then road to Barrack St Dundalk, then by rail to Arklow, I didn't manage to get decent photos, in was in year 1991. Ernie

Whilst looking through the files I came across this one at Onllwyn with 'KELLYS ' containers. New name on me! THought Kelly was from the Isle of Man Not Northern Ireland!!! Ernie

I have been checking out info on where the Cawoods containers went to in Ireland and as far as I can gather they were mainly shipped from Ellesmere Port to Northern Ireland where Cawoods were based. As NIR had given up on internal freight traffic earlier it is extremely unlikely that any containers were transported by rail or into the Republic ports. Ernie

I have been digging through the files but nothing on the Irish side has turned up so far. As far as I can remember the Cawoods traffic from Lynemouth etc only ran for a few years in the early/mid 1980's. Prior to that the flows originated 'darn south' somewhere EDIT. found some views at Onllwyn South Wales.. I have found some interesting views of wagons on the 'Enterprise' trains through Carlisle. I have several views of complete Trainloads on the Settle & Carlisle of British Fuel containers but wonder if they were actually carrying gypsum for Kirby Thore prior to re-livery or perhaps the scottish coal flows were organised into train loads after the demise of the enterprise network. Here are the DRS wagons 68034 top and 68004 tail 10 on 665U Kingmoor to Hull Hedon Road on 16 November 2017. On the odd occasion a single wagon would appear on the Seaton Flasks through Haltwhistle. Ernie

At Balmenach distillery further up the Speyside branch it appears they moved barrels internally by rail to a barrel store , see this interesting facility! https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/34942743773/in/album-72157685827366556/ In the album there are several views of the distinctive blue grain wagons in June 1967 at Knockando (Balmenach) . It is possible that as these mainly came north in block trains, John Boyes the photographer wasn't around when grain was being delivered to Dailuaine or the Company's other distillery at Carron station. I will have a dig in the files and see if the other scans I have show anything new! Ernie

Just noticed this one of St Moritz on the RhB. The road was built later than the headshunt but the reason the headshunt is that long is that through coach sets from the RhB in Chur to Tirano on the Berninabahn had to be shunted from the RhB line top right to the Berninabahn bottom right (Not all the through sets/trains went via the Samedan to Pontressina branch) Tm 24 transfering Bernina Express set to RhB 9Apr2001 Ernie

Yes they were Highland Railway, however after the Grouping Ex Caledonian Railway locomotives arrived in some numbers on the ex Highland lines as the older Highland classes were withdrawn and the LMS attempted a degree of standardisation. EX HR and particularly ex G&SWR locomotive classes were hard hit. The Peter Drummond designed HR locos were in some cases rebuilt with CR style boilers.
