  1. What could you put in it to model it as a full wagon ?
  2. I was thinking of sending two locos including the Sentinel to them to chip them for DCC and install running lamps. I have now worked out how to pull the whole thing apart. This was made more difficult by the fact that the brake gear had been glued so I cut it off as others have done. The motor seemed to be rubbing on the plastic cover so I have made a spacer to raise the cover and this seems to have solved the problem.
  3. Well, nice to know somebody else had trouble ! I spent weeks trying to mix my own before giving up and buying Phoenix Precision crimson lake from the UK.
  4. My sentinel has developed a loud grinding noise when running in reverse at a mid range speed. I oiled the two gears underneath but this has only made the problem worse and now the noise is present over a much wider range. Sending it back is not an option so I would like to pull the whole thing apart for a closer inspection. Are there any expanded diagrams to help me with that process ?
  5. Are you going to weather it ? I intend to weather mine but I would like to see a few examples of what others have done.
  6. Any chance that they will produce the other three LMS numbers ? A plain black one might also prove useful to some people. Are these transfers or tampo printing on this model ?
  7. I received my LMS Sentinel loco yesterday. It runs beautifully but I have two questions : 1. Why can't all model locos have such good low speed control ? Is it the motor that determines this ? 2. I was surprised to see the exposed gears on the axles underneath the loco where they can pick up all sorts of dirt, fluff etc. Surely it would have been better to have them covered ? This guard/cover could have been held in place by two screws and easily removed for lubricating the mechanism.
  8. This model is going to require some very sophisticated packaging. There is no point forking out money on a model that gets damaged in transit.
  9. I hope they put a photo up on their website straight away before they paint it. I really want to see this.
  10. Don't smoke units get hot and melt the boiler when they run out of oil ? Perhaps they thought it was too big a risk. I am always wary of such things.
  11. Really ? Do you think it would look out of place on a Great Western branch line ?
  12. Why are they making this a limited production run ? Is there some advantage to the manufacturer in doing this ? I would think that if it is popular then just keep making them ! Considering how fast the Bachmann LMS 3F sold out, I have a feeling there will not be enough LMS Garratts to go around.
  13. How did you remove the pipe work from the smoke box and boiler ? Was it glued in or could you just ease it out gently with tweezers ?
  14. That was very brave of you ! Any chance of a photo taken in the dark with the loco ''fired up'' ? Do the LED's flicker ? I am surprised that more RTR locos do not have a glowing firebox factory-fitted. I know it would cost more but people are prepared to pay large sums of money for sound. Of course there has to be room in the loco. I doubt that you would get an LED inside a Dapol/Hornby Pug !
  15. I have struck another problem......cranes are full of problems ! The winding drums have become stuck fast with paint. I cannot budge them with the plastic tool (it broke). I need to be able to turn these when it comes time to rig the crane and wind the cable around the drums. Any suggestions would be welcome.
  16. I have a tin of Dubbin which is use to clean my shoes. It is composed largely of beeswax and is clear so it should do the job.
  17. I think it is amazing that you still have a kit that you built 50 years ago !
  18. That is the problem : Cotton would go fluffy like you said. There is polyester cotton but it is very thin and it does not look right. I have heard of people using fishing line but surely this is too stiff ? I can't see how it would ''hang'' properley but I do not know much about fishing line ! It is a pity that this type of crane did not use chain ; chain always looks great.
  19. I have almost finished building and painting the Dapol OO gauge crane kit. What sort of thread would look best to rig this crane ? I have used chains on smaller cranes such as that made by Cambrian Models but the Dapol crane was fitted with steel cables. Most cotton is too thin and it would not hang properley. What have others used to get the right look ?
  20. Yes, I did split the signal when I was using an old VHS recorder with a digital TV because it is easier to set up that way. The VHS recorder was picking up the old analogue signal which is still operating for a while and the TV was picking up the digital signal. I used a very cheap splitter connection too and noticed no loss of signal or detoriation in picture quality. You would only notice anything different if you had a poor signal to begin with.
  21. Aha...now I see. I resisted the lure of digital for a long time too but they are going to turn the old analogue signal off in a few months so I had to make the change.
  22. Why won't this work ? I just did it ! I bought a twin tuner this morning and split the aerial into two : one to the digital tuner and the other to the TV. I probably did not have to set it up this way but I did and it works fine. The digital recorder can record two stations while I watch a third station. Perhaps things are different in the UK ?
  23. Most people do not have a problem. If you were in an isolated area and had a weak signal to begin with (common problem in rural Australia) then you might notice a difference but usually the picture will still look the same.
  24. Do what I use to do with the old video recorder : split your antenna signal using a splitter . One cable goes to the input on your tuner/recorder and the other goes to the input on your TV. You connect the TV to the recorder using RCA plugs (yellow, red, white)
  25. I called the manufacturer and it turns out that SOME single tuners can record one program while watching another pre-recorded program but it is difficult to find out which ones can and cannot, hence all the confusion. The manuals are not clear on this either so that does not help. It will be much simpler but more expensive to buy a twin tuner. NOTE : I live in Cairns, Australia.
