  4. I don't entirely agree. There is growing interest in Woodhead, but, the main problem is space for most modellers. Snippets of cramped bits of Manchester are do-able, but the glory of Woodhead is the wide open moorlands. Outdoor OLE anyone?
  5. Don Jones version of BNS was built in the late 70's / early 80's. As a trainee signalling engineer I helped him in a small way with his knowledge of the prototype. Sadly, the invitation to view the layout, (which I admit I was fishing for) never materialised.

  7. An alternative to cork underlay is self adhesive FabFoam (other trade names are available) from Hobbycraft. It is 2mm thick and comes in a wide range of colours. I use black, so that the odd bit of missing ballast is not noticeable. A cheaper alternative for ballasting is vivarium calcium carbonate sand sold in pet shops. The natural colour is close to newly ballasted track in the post-steam era. It takes diluted acrylic paint well.

  9. Is this to closer approximate an L1 or to convert it to a different prototype?
  10. Some of you may remember snippets of the saga of my father whose sight has been deteriorating for over a decade. Tomorrow he has agreed to start a fortnights respite care, with a view to becoming permanent, if he finds it not too disagreeable. This would be a momentous event for most people, but it is especially so in his case as he has lived in the house he and my mother had built as newlyweds, since 1956.
  11. Very little uk rolling stock is more than 9 feet 3 inches wide, which is 37mm in 1:76. Its unlikely that any recent models cheat by as much as 4mm per side.
  12. Too many people lack the skills or are too idle to redecorate, it's not only a question of lack of vision.
  13. I would echo the sentiments of previous posters. The Station Master has given his time and patience in spades on this and several other layout plans, including my Stourhampton permanent layout, double track, two boxes portrayed, level crossing, loops, bay, sidings the works. Many thanks indeed. Did the book ever materialise?
  14. New topic within this. Is anyone going to the 40's weekends June 25th / 26th & July 1st / 2nd? And are you going in period dress? We need to know. And we need photos after.
  15. Son of My Father - Chicory Tip
  16. I don't think there is a lot of calculation in these designs. It's getting the greatest amount of reduction in each of two stages within the constraints of the space available and the smallest pulley advised by the makers for the belts chosen.

LJ popped into the workshop/gym/garage this afternoon and asked what was up my ladder. Well the proper answer is "Stourhampton" but I replied, "my toys". I doubt that answer will be enough to satisfy her curiosity for long, so I may dig out my stash of Super 4 Track and some 1960s wagons. Does anyone know of a battery powered 00 locomotive for 4 year olds, apart from the above?
