  1. Andy, I don't know why you are saying this is your last great project, don't be so depressing. Canal Road was meant to be my last great project, and just look, after 29 years I am pulling it apart, adding bits, subtracting bits - sound like a maths teacher - and low and behold, my next last great project. Wonder what the one after this will be. Derek
  2. I haven't looked at RMW for a few days, beavering away at my conversion of Canal Road to something I can manage. So glad to know you are moving forward, upward and onward. Well done Andy. Now how about a nice EM gauge Midland layout? OK I'm off, where's me coat ! Derek.
  3. Andy, Julia is mine----------all mine!! Must be, I saw her first. Derek
  4. Jeff, it was a bit unfortunate you were incapacitated over the weekend. We had a great time at the Goathland show. Good to meet up with Jason and the 'Diesel in the Duchy' lads. Hope you all enjoyed it 'fellas' and thanks for coming. Derek
  5. Actually that horse was useful in the exhibiting days. When young children came to see the layout, I asked them if they could see a funny gee gee. Gave them something to do. Derek
  6. Paul, the cowboy has lost his 20 (?) gallon hat and the horse has gone to the knackers yard. Derek
  7. Andy, I think you ought to get away while the goings good, but probably even Australia isn't far enough Derek
  8. Just caught up again. Got a good remedy for you Jeff. When I was a young lad and came home from playing football at school, full of aches and pains and wishing to die, my dad went straight for the tin of 'Fiery Jack'. When I saw that coming I instantly felt better and headed for the hills. Remedy is far worse than the cure. Anybody got a spare tin of it for Jeff? Few more piccies of Kirkby Malham from 1993/4. No idea who took them, but the one of the goods shed proves the Midland provided shiny plastic uniforms for their men. The camera never lies! Derek
  9. Some pics from the early 1990's when I spent my time trundling my branch line layout around shows in the north, always in a broken down old van.. Shows views of the trans-shipment shed at Kirkby Limes. Derek
  10. Well Jeff, your new bunker looks OK. how about building KL2 in EM, then I can come and have a play. Might even get Jason and Andy converted as well. Yer never know tha knaws. Derek
  11. A few more views of Canal Road, before and after demolishing -------------------------- What HAVE I done? The final shot is the 'yard' board with the 00 section sliced off. I can now reach to the back without having to climb on my bench. Canal Road is rising from the wreckage, however, and with current thinking will be a terminus station, served by double track. It will require a bit more pointwork, some of which I have already built. Name KIRKBY MALHAM. This is actually K-M mark 2. The original, back in the late 1980's, was my exhibition layout, and hawked around the country in a succession of broken down old vans. It survived and eventually went to a good home. I have regretted selling it ever since, but my wife got a bit fed up of manhandling it (should that be womanhandling?) out of the loft. I must find some piccies of mark1 and post them on here. Derek
  12. In my early student days, one of our lectures was at the hands of the head of chemistry at the local college. He wrote a long physical chemistry equation on the board and while we were trying to scribble it down in our note books, he decided that this quantity cancelled out that, and this number was insignificant compared with the other. All the time rubbing out so when we looked up, what he had bore no resemblance to the thing he started with. All we could do was wonder what the hell was going on. Derek
  13. ChrisN, or, another teaser, ---- rearrange the following into a well known phrase or saying ---- off sod !! Derek
  14. Have to agree there fellas. We have lived in our present house for 39 years and in that time have owned about 14 cars, none of which has slept in the garage. Staying outside didn't appear to be too detrimental. On very few occasions did we have starting problems and only one (a Triumph Dolomite) could be classed as a rust bucket. Our present car, a 7 year old Honda Jazz, seems quite happy. Meanwhile our railways had permanent homes. Derek
  15. A few more pics of Canal Road before it was demolished. The first is a NER (I am not completely biased) 0-6-2T, class U on a 'stopping goods' just reversed into the refuge siding to allow a faster train to pass. Loco is scratch built as is part of the train. The 25 ton bogie road van behind the engine was built by my wife many years ago. She said at the time, about railway modellers, "if you can't beat them, join them", and this was the result plus some rather nice trees. Then we have a NER class P2 ? (later LNER J26) on a train of hoppers approaching Haw Bank No2 tunnel. Again loco and train scratch built. At the time there were no NER hopper wagon kits available, so my mate and I built a fair few from scratch, then Slaters brought out kits for them. Typical!! Springs Canal to the far left. The third one is a quiet day with a horsebox and carriage truck in the end loading dock. With stable accommodation for five horses behind. Derek
  16. Good luck Andy, it will all be worth the hassle ----- eventually. Derek
  17. Hi Jason, just caught up after a few days off. Superb shot of a superb model railway. Very well done. Derek
  18. Thanks Mike, Here are a few more pics. The layout is in the process of being dismantled. If you look in the Settle and Carlisle - Lunester Lounge thread page 207 onwards, you will see the reason why. However all will not be lost and some of Canal Road will surface at some point in the future. The action, by the way, is taking place in June 1908 Derek
  19. This shot has appeared before, a long time ago, in another thread on RMWeb in glorious colour, so here it is again a bit more subdued. I am a poor photographer and this pic is one of my better ones. The loco is a scratch built model of a Midland slim boilered 4-4-0 2183 class, the carriages are modified Ratio, all painted by Coachman Larry (who else?) The lines to the right are '00', the ones to the left with the train are 'EM'. The train is pulling out of Embsay Canal Road station on it's way to Skipton, where it will form the 11.30am to Bradford Market Street. The milk van at the rear is destined for Bell's Dairy in Leeds. My apologies for lack of lamps on the loco, it is carrying them now Derek
  20. No, Paul was telling me he has "seen the light" (something a bit like old Saul on the road to Damascus) and will be painting them ---- need I say more? Derek
  21. Hello Nick, Just found your thread and read about all you have done from day 1. It is superb. I particularly like the track layout and the way it 'flows'. Great stuff, keep the piccies coming. Derek
  22. You have got on well with the lining, Paul. You only started it last night. Looking OK Will see you Sunday, about 9.0am, if any change, let me know. Derek
  23. It would look better in --------. But you don't need me to tell you Paul. You know you want to. Derek
  24. Haw Bank Nos.1&2 tunnels. A bit annoying about that strange line in the sky. The '00' lines are on the left, EM over to the right. Derek
