Like a complete tool ive just accidently knocked mine off the layout and now isn't running properly like a cardon shaft maybe has dislodged.

Any guides on getting access to the bogie towers?

Body detail stood up well to the excursion just one aerial gone missing in the carpet.

In the first instance remove the body and look into the bogie tower access windows on the side of the chassis and see if any of the worm cover cap clips have popped loose.

If any are not clipped down they can easily be clipped back in place with a small flathead screwdriver.

Feel free to contact us via email if you need further guidance.

Having the headlight switch off automatically when the loco stops would be the reerse of the usual setup for cab lights, where they can be set on when stopped and automatically go out when the loco starts moving - these are also able to be set directionally. For those locos of other brands, and the Cavalex class 56, this is the cab light setup I prefer. Many of the newer locos have this already, but older locomotives with ESU LokSound or LokPilot 4 and 5 decoders have the ability to have this programmed in, as long as the loco wiring has the two ends wired correctly.

The older locos with cab lights on the one circuit for both ends cannot be done this way.

Coming back to the Cavalex 60, there's no reason the headlights could not be set up to automatically go off when stopped, if that's so desired. It would also be easily reprogrammed to not do this if so desired. Having said all that, I would prefer the headlights to simply be on a function where I would have control of whether they are on or off.

Yeah your auto cab light thing is very odd, that implies that the driver turns his cab light on every time he stops his loco, which he doesn't. Hell with my modellers hat on rather than company one, I personally would be happy with no cab light at all as it's not that often turned on and then only at night.

Unless doing intensive shunting (so should have markers only switched on but becoming less used by crew) as soon as loco stops for a 'pause' be it in yard / shed/ loop the direction selector is placed to EO engine only or as some call it neutral ! This activates the second feature! The auto recline! Seat back feet up! Then this instantly activates function key 101 brew in hand 😄

    G

That's useful, so do you think that the light working automatically, without the driver pressing a function, is the way to go?

My vote is for the headlight to turn off when the loco stops as this is prototypical.

A function could be used for those who didn’t like this ‘feature’.

This would have to be well explained in the accompanying guide in order to stop anyone complaining.

    Andrew

It's not prototypical though is it? As the driver has to manually turn the master switch off for it to go out. It's not a case of if the loco stops it goes out.

I understand the headlight being on its own AUX connection, that’s not what I meant. I was more referring to the automation of the light being turned on and off when the loco is stationary being done by the decoder and a specific function map, rather than some complicated circuits on the main PCB. Apologies I could’ve worded that better.

No that would be done in software on the decoder if we implement that.

  6. 48 minutes ago, Bryn_Bach_Railway said:

assuming it’s the decoder doing this internally using the existing lighting connections rather than it being wired to an additional AUX output? If so then maybe have it automatic by default, but with a manual override on a higher function number for those who want it? Not sure how possible that would be with the amount of functions in sound models, but would then give the best of both worlds

The lighting has to be on additional Aux connections or else you cannot work them independently.

Maybe this has been asked previously apologies if it has. On the real thing the headlight turns off when the driver puts the master switch into the neutral position. It turns on again when the driver selects forward. Will the model replicate this?

The photos look amazing very impressed with the cab took me back to the days when I worked on class 60s as a trainman.

We are looking in how to best represent this. It's not a case of the light going off every time the loco stops but only when the master switch is put in neutral. In effect on the model it would just be a function button that turns the headlight on and off. The loco has day, night, yard and stabling modes on functions anyway so do we have it go out automatically whenever you stop or just have a manual headlight function button labelled master switch? Thoughts?

Recieved my Class 56's which are great I have fitted a Gaugemaster DCC 21 pin chip to both of them but I cant seem to activate the cab lights can anybody enlighten me as to how these are activated please, many thanks

    Chris

The lighting setout is complex and not set up out of the box. We recommend a Lokpilot with the custom.file installed from the ESU website in order to work all functions. Which gaugemaster decoder are you using?

Was online a couple of weeks ago when Rails put their last 56s on line, all of them being in-house weathered versions.  I’m always a little cautious with “production line” weathering (they had lots available), but I have to say I’m chuffed to bits with what I got. Anyone know who did the weathering for them?

They have a chap who does it for them in house. Not sure what his name is.

Sorry if I've missed this, I do follow the thread as best I can, but were the non-sound decoders that were being done (to the same specs as the sound (minus sound of course)) released?

Happy to wait if not, just don't want to miss them.

Thanks in advance for any replies

The file is available free of charge on the ESU website if you are able to blow your own decoders or you can order a pre blown decoder from our retailers or Road and Rails.

Just got round to filming one of my class 56's the other day and thought I'd load it on here for you. This is 56049 Colas livery with tankers. A selection of Bachmann, Revolution and someone else's as well. (Cav/Alex, you will know!). Still need to do some weathering on the tankers and the loco for a bit more realism.

    Love that.

One thing the inflated ebay prices shows is there is a market out there waiting for a second run.  I'd have another two blue ones tomorrow at list price that is. Plus 56036 in LL.

There will be another run next year after the class 60 run completes.

Is this right, these wagons only have the handbrake wheel on one side, as shown here?  Trying to work out if my wagon is missing a handbrake wheel too!

    ECEAB96D-628E-41F3-B623-75B68ADFBDF0.png

It should have a handbrake wheel on each side. The contact point for the wheel to the end of the thin wire on the model is very small and they do come off quite easily. Something that we will address on the next batch.

Any word on when further stock of TEAs are planned?

    Thanks

We are planning a new batch next year, the factory is pretty backed up with our stuff for the rest of this year.

I wouldn’t trust anything of that sort just because someone has stated it as fact on the internet. Doing a search just now Safari suggested the “grid” was fitted from 56056 onwards…

I’m not suggesting anyone else’s view is wrong, but the panel on the front of the cab is the horn grill - it doesn’t remotely look to me like a grid - and at least in the groups of enthusiasts I frequented “grid” was always understood to come from the bang plate, which is in the form of a grid, because it was so unusual and stood out as different on a British loco.

If by 'grid you mean the large horn grill then yes 056 onwards. If you mean the bang plate grid then that was 001 to 090.

Apologies if this has been covered already amongst the many pages but I’ve just got my sound fitted Colas grid out the box, I’ve pressed function 1 to activate the sound so with the sound on and upon turning the dial on my controller to get the loco moving, the flange squeal sounds straight away until it picks up speed then it goes off by itself and then when slowing the loco down, once it gets down to crawling speed the flange squeal activates again until the loco comes to a complete stop - even on straight track! I’ve got a factory sound fitted DCR grid too and this one doesn’t do this and I’ve looked at the internal switches to see if one was different to the other but all switches are as they should be. I’ve only got a Hornby elite controller at the moment so can only access 12 functions (none higher than 12)

Any help is much appreciated 🙂

The flange squeal shouldn't be on by default. It's activated by F7 so you should be able to see if it's on. Are you sure it's the squeal and not the bogie rattle sound as that is on be default?

Just found out, by accident that the 56 is the most superb 'crawler' when hauling.  I had mine hooked up to 14x Bachmann bogie TEA tankers + 3x 4-wheeled, whilst trying to figure out how to detail a Dapol Western I'd recently 'won' on a certain auction site.

I just 'pinged the undercab steps on the Western trying to dry test the fitting whilst the 56 was running.

Amazingly I'd managed to follow the 'falling sounds' of the steps and saw them, so slowed the 56, thought I'd stopped her, but I hadn't.  At Gaugemaster 'D' DC running '22' it was still crawling, perhaps 1 sleeper per second and smoothly!!

Despite the heavy flywheels, which impede very slow running at times I find, this was absolutely superb.  I left her and found she continued, at this speed, without issue for another 2 minutes before I retrieved the steps, and preferred to increase power so as not to overload the motor - very impressive!!

    Al.

You won't overload the motor. It's designed to crawl like the real loco when loading/unloading MGRs.

Depends which era you’re modelling though, as some were removed later in life. E.g. 56007 in 1988:

    56105, 58019 & 56007 Barrow Hill 2.7.88

2003 condition that I’m trying to replicate:

    56007 6d11 Thornaby 31/03/2003

Picture links from Flickr. Moral of the story they’re all different so check your chosen prototype before fitting! I fell foul of that after realising 56018 didn’t have them fitted…

    56018

    Kind regards,

    Will

You ought to also remove the NEM pocket if detailing the end as well, as there is a very obvious hole without the grid fitted.

That photo reminds me to ask. Which was the lowest numbered 56 that did NOT have the grid under the buffer beam that gave them the nickname? Was it 56087?

They all had the grid under the bufferbeam.
