  2. I had thought about conversion to AC, but why would anybody go to that expense when there will be 317s surplus soon? I know they are older but no conversion is required. Although Angel Trains seems prepared to spend money on them (e.g. AC traction motors). Cheers David
  3. If it was possible to work them push-pull with a locomotive, surely a better proposition would be to wire them for Blue Star/AAR/whatever the new CAF stock is getting, removing the slidey rail/traction equipment and actually use them in revenue service elsewhere in the country. Cheers David
  4. Didn't the 387s break the 108mph record? DfT actually offered the 442 as part of the TransPennine franchise with the idea they could be converted to LHCS with cabs but First didn't want them. Unless an overseas buyer could be found for at least some of them (New Zealand?) then it's probably scrap. Cheers David
  5. I mentioned that a few pages back. All those dirty diesels when the prevailing "wisdom" at the time was P4 had to be pre-grouping with immaculate locomotives. Cheers David

  8. Not sure what type they are but old boilers were kept at various places along the line to shore up the banks of the Waimakariri River if heavy snow melt caused erosion. There are (or at least were) some at Cass too. They were cut open to salvage the copper. Cheers David

  10. Very nice! I noticed the playing cards. Are they part of the operation? Cheers David

  13. Actually yes. He experimented a lot with mic placement before finding the mechanical sound he wanted. IIRC at one stage he had the mic diaphragm hard up against the Marshall case. Cheers David
  14. I dispute that this is a fail! The late Jon Lord used to do just that before having the Marshall and Leslie hard wired. Cheers David
  15. Train manufacture/assembly is just catching up to how aircraft have been built for decades. Even Boeing has components made in Australia and shipped to Seattle for final assembly. Cheers David
  16. Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF confirmed to Railway Gazette on July 14 that it is preparing to open a UK assembly plant to support the contracts it has won in recent months. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/business/single-view/view/caf-confirms-uk-assembly-plant.html
  17. Some of these cow puns are really well done.
