  1. Not sure what type they are but old boilers were kept at various places along the line to shore up the banks of the Waimakariri River if heavy snow melt caused erosion. There are (or at least were) some at Cass too. They were cut open to salvage the copper. Cheers David

  3. Very nice! I noticed the playing cards. Are they part of the operation? Cheers David

  6. Actually yes. He experimented a lot with mic placement before finding the mechanical sound he wanted. IIRC at one stage he had the mic diaphragm hard up against the Marshall case. Cheers David
  7. I dispute that this is a fail! The late Jon Lord used to do just that before having the Marshall and Leslie hard wired. Cheers David
  8. Train manufacture/assembly is just catching up to how aircraft have been built for decades. Even Boeing has components made in Australia and shipped to Seattle for final assembly. Cheers David
  9. Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF confirmed to Railway Gazette on July 14 that it is preparing to open a UK assembly plant to support the contracts it has won in recent months. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/business/single-view/view/caf-confirms-uk-assembly-plant.html
  10. Some of these cow puns are really well done.
  11. Slightly tangential, I saw the comments from Bob Zenk posted by Rapido on Facebook. It would be great if they could be reposted on RMWeb. Cheers David
  12. For interest, a couple of prototype Inglenooks in Portland OR but neither have been used for some time. https://goo.gl/maps/L44P3Ca9Up42 https://goo.gl/maps/SN9Ls8ZWgjs https://goo.gl/maps/ZFyfsBhWXAJ2 (the 3 way turnout is prototypical!) If you go to map and zoom out, that whole switching district looks fascinating with lots of ideas for layots. This in particular is almost a case of life imitating art. https://goo.gl/maps/yeY7AHARkBQ2 Cheers David
  13. Well that's the whole band gone...
  14. Wow, did you know that stuff like this happens in Italy???????!!!!!!!
  15. True but they experimented with Stephen Fry, Jack Dee and Rob Brydon first. Cheers David
  16. The BBC couldn't afford them. They are laughing all the way to the bank on Amazon Prime. Cheers David
  17. Indeed when not actually driving (e.g. in the studio or the cross-London race where The Stig took the Tube) it's often one of the production staff in the suit. Cheers David
  18. BREAKING NEWS: Jeremy Clarkson rushed to hospital after overdose of schadenfreude.
  19. As mentioned above, Bredon was quite an eye opener. Typical "train set" size but didn't look like it. Some pics here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79714-the-best-train-set-layout-you-ever-saw/?p=1261596 EDIT: And another one that just sprang to mind, Dave Howsam's Howley Town. Cheers David
  20. Lochside for realistic operation in a small space and all those dirty diesels. The prevailing "wisdom" at the time (1979) was that P4 had to be clean pre-grouping. Cheers David
