  1. At 4.17 - 4.22 there are two classic coal haulers - an Atkinson and the early style Volvo truck that I think of as synonymous with the Lothian coalfield. Not sure if Stuart P has come over to the Dark Side at this time
  2. Jings, crivvens, help m'Boab etc... It's the one of the hoppers I described (wrongly possibly) as anhydrite carriers, and referred to on this page by Pennine MC. I think.
  3. I was biased slightly by wanting an excuse to run mine on the main line - it's my only remaining Wrenn product (and there's a nice new Dapol specimen in HobbyRail atm too, Retail Ed) The other Dave's S&C collection has got several of The Waverley in its 1S49 days, including this shot of D320 doing the honours: EDIT: new link required to replace Fotopic dead-end my mistake, that's 1S64, here's D34 on 1S49, and I reckon my recently arrived D67 will become D34 in this condition EDIT: new link required to replace Fotopic dead-end EDIT: new link required to replace Fotopic dead-end is D12 in 1967, and... Proving the old adage that low-numbered split-box types were especially popular over the route, here's D12 in BFYE in 1968. Looks like another 45053 may be needed to join the raft of 46053s I just snapped up for the BFYE centre headcode variants: EDIT: new link required to replace Fotopic dead-end
  4. The freight wagon variety did surprise me, I have to say. I was reckoning on some parcels mongrels, but the opens in these and other similar shots are very interesting. The short in stature Rail Blue van - not a GW Fruit D by any chance?
  5. There's an incredible collection of B&W photos listed on eBay at the moment (no connection with seller), many of which feature 'Last train at' such-and-such (Leek, Lutterworth etc) shots, people and staff pics, plus snaps from passing trains, including this one, taken at Shankend, from 2M52 behind D5304 in the summer of '66: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...#ht_1108wt_1165 I can imagine being there.... And elsewhere on RMWeb, photos of Woodhead have introduced me to this incredible shot taken on Shap of a northbound parcels: http://davesnorthwestrailwayarchive.fotopic.net/p58725959.html Whilst not knowing exactly what service this is, it's the consist that's fascinating, and entirely plausible as one of the nocturnal Waverley services. Happily, there's not a standard CCT to be seen, as I sold all my Lima ones and haven't got round to their Margate replacements yet...
  6. Like many Brummies, I will recall with fondness the late Don Jones' 'Miniature New St' (DMNS), which had taken over the garden of the family's Douglas Road property and was open to the public once a year. Don had many quirks in his modelling - why shouldn't he, it was his train-set after all? - but one feature that grew in impact every year was the scrapyard. Because the roster running on the - it must be said, impressive - layout was at least faithful to class, many other types had been withdrawn and were now the centrepiece of the scrapyard cameo. Thus the 1:76 breakers had tri-ang EM2s and Blue Pullman cars to go at. Yes, you did read that right
  7. Sean, it would do for my ends. Which is just as well, as there's one precisely like this waiting equivalent attention on my W/B. I think there's issues with the sides' flushness, windows and varicose other details, but it all depends how far does too far go, as does every modelling decision we take. I'd be perfectly content, and will be, with a similar bun-truck in one of my Class 1 sets. I just sold a W9135E which was a stretch Hornby (old chassis) with Ian Kirk (I think) sides and scratch roof details, plus detailed and repainted interior. I'm going to finish its replacement to broadly similar spec. I know that won't satisfy the purests (sic), but my pareto attention span weights loco 'correctness' 60% of the whole, with environs and hauled stock trailing in somewhere behind (literally!) in that order. Thanks for posting.
  8. This is a bit breathtaking to be honest: http://www.s1galashi.../max-183442.jpg to see an aerial photo of part-rationalised Gala and a beautiful folly http://www.railbrit....19000/19200.jpg
  9. Better alert Dudley Dodger to that crackling bit of gen
  10. Gareth did pretty much everything he was able to in the circumstances: getting a listing modified due to copyright infringement. I imagine that anyone with any nous would know that these are available from Trains4U and check for shop availability before weighing-in with an offer, it's not the first time this has been listed, as was said above. I think that in the overall scheme of things this is a lesser ethical issue than the exhibition bulk-buyers. Incidentally, the most recent example of that discussed on RMWeb3 was the First ScotRail 158s. Funnily enough, if you check the seller's other items - lo and behold - there's one of them too!

And now back to my occasional series of cost-effective corner-fillers for the larger layout: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...2#ht_500wt_1182 And proof, if any were needed, that Barwell underestimated demand for these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bachmann-SET-OF-3-PRESFLO-22-T-CEMENT-WAGONS-LTD-EDT_W0QQitemZ130378495932QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Trains_Railway_Models?hash=item1e5b29f7bc#ht_853wt_1165

It also features the unusual "represengtati ve motion" which you don't hear so much about, these days
  14. This was definitely the basis of supply whilst Turner Diesel had sole management of the after-sales parts. Not sure that those aggressive guaranteed turn-rounds still apply now they're no longer in the frame.

...and you thought that 'leaning to the right' was a trick of the camera. Read the description of this 'item' http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/freehold-semi-detached-house-stafford-west-midlands-wow_W0QQitemZ110515213717QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HG_Property_RL?hash=item19bb385595#ht_1074wt_1165

And what do we think happened here with this boxhead? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/lima-oo-gauge-boxhead-class-40-D324-weathered_W0QQitemZ350338060791QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Trains_Railway_Models?hash=item5191c691f7#ht_500wt_1182

  21. Mate, it's truly one of the best I've seen too. I can imagine standing there in that remote spot watching her throb by. I wonder how many wagons were ever despatched from the long general merch siding in the foreground The only thing I've ever seen in there was the D36x Class 40 after its prang in September '65 just across the viaduct.
  22. As Dave will tell you, I didn't know what happened at 100 deg C/ 212 F until this photo provided my Damascene moment, so forgive my ignorance but: a mate who knows about such things (if Didcot GWS counts) once said that the Clans were an entry-level Brit, which to me suggests the 720xx were the 1.3L Capri and the 700xx a 2.8i with dealer add-ons. Now that should alienate both petrolheads and vapourheads.
  23. Seldom (if ever) before have I had this feeling. I looked at the image of 72002 for ages trying to establish, neigh quantify, what the special ingredient was... First the optical illusion that every wheel tread is sitting true on the railhead, which put me in mind of a serpent. Then, the twin escapes of steam, and the fact that she's poised ready to tackle the ascent to Whitrope, made me think that here is literally a living creature - an iron horse no less, pawing at the ground with her hoofs. I've never quite got it before, I'm critically a couple of years too young, but this picture has sold it me. EDIT: make that four escapes of steam
  24. Scottish Region has been associated with red ballast for a number of years, at Polmadie our then Depot Manager was rightfully proud of it compared to the grey dreary stuff at the rest of West Coast's facilities
