  1. Do you mean balance (as in weight distribution) or getting the loco level?

Weight distribution, as you probably know 0-4-2s and 0-4-4s are a bit of a pig in that respect :D as i said it's not insurmountable with some form of springing, it would take more experimentation. I think the key is much stiffer springing on the trailing axle.

  2. Have you got a picture of how you suspended the trailing axle?

Ill see what i can do later. But initially I used springing, but I reverted to the rocking axle :icon_wow: supplied in the kit, mainly because I was finding it very hard to balance the loco, and I had a secondary problem of removing the trailing wheelset. Both problems are solveable but in the end I went with the easiest solution, bearing in mind I also intend to use a split axle for the trailing wheelset, in the hope that it will improve performance.

  3. Tom Mallard commissioned his own etches, so if you want one of his, you'll have to pay him to build from them! ??????????.

The Sayer-Chaplin "kit" I have is a fascinating trip back to the 1950s, when brass was "engraved" rather than etched. One other thing about it is that the brass seems to be this strange but hard grade; quite difficult to bend. It will go on an old Puffers/Perseverance chassis and Riceworks detailing bits that I bought for this purpose.

They use cz120 brass which has contains a small amount of lead to make engravine easier, you will find it has totally different properties to the brass in etched kits

  4. Love the CSB. What spring diameter are you using?

P.S. I can't see the whole of your two pics, because the silly right-hand frame thing obscures them, and nothing happens (should it be in 'lightbox' mode?) when I click to try to see the whole pic.

    The CSB is 28thou.

You only get lightbox mode if the original image is larger than 640px (I think) so I may start uploading at a higher resolution

TBH I'm still feeling my way about with it :D

  5. Impressive B) That really is the attraction of 7mm scale for me - you can put loads of detail in, and still be able to see it reasonably well :D

What the attraction of going cross eyed on small details you could ignore in 4mm

Nice bit of piping BTW :D Scalehardware delivery is very quick isn't it

  6. Those are excellent layout ideas! I've often toyed with the idea of Winchester too, as part of my general liking for the DN&SR. And there was that amazing 4mm layout of Winchester by the Southampton group that was described in MRJ.

That said, what would really make a difference would be Paddington 1906! That would be truly amazing (even if it's only Bishop's Road!).

I have always liked londons railways, paddington I'd a fasinating place, I have collected quite a few sources over the years, it must have been an incredible place at the height of the Edwardian era, so much modelling potential. BTW I like your ideas for small layouts.

  7. That's a real beauty, and the bolts on the boiler clamp (or is it a tank support?) really do add something.

btw, shouldn't there be a couple of 'boiler' bands on the firebox? I mention it because they should go underneath that angle piece between the firebox and tank (see this photo

    Nick

Yes, Well spotted, there should be boiler bands! I prefer to add them at the painting stage, using a thin waterslide cut into a strip.

  8. There were some 3/16 on that page as well as 1/8" for 4mm but the outside diameter was a little large.

I'd always thought the bearings were a bigger cost in the Hobby Holidays package but they are quite cheap when you use your own hornguides.

I looked at these for 4mm but they are still slightly big on the OD http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3Racing-Double-Metal-Shield-Bearing-1-8x1-4x7-64-10-pc_W0QQitemZ170358147891QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item27aa230b33&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262

Bearings are cheap these days, my guess Hobby Hoildays pay about 50p each, about the same for the etch guide, leaving ??14 to cover the cnc and profit!!

I would have thought the gains in a free running chassis in 4 mm would be quite signifigant, The 2mm I/d I have are about the limit for practical use, and as you the o/d is the limiting factor

  9. Is it safe to assume that other S7 folk could buy said etches from you? smile.gif

A 14xx on a two coach parcels from Paddington? There truly is a prototype for everything!

    Regards

    Dan

indeed so,but the only problem is that they have other stuff on as well. In retrospect I would add a couple of other items to it.

  10. Hi 28ten,

    nice one!

These MOK kits do take some beating don't they? I'm getting more and more drawn into getting the 4MT tank every time I see one of their models.

    regards

    Mike

Yes they art top notch. The 4mt isn't a favourite, but I can't resist a good kit! And now I have seen the 8f.....

  11. I'd be rather interested to know where the bearings came from, please. I've found similar, but not 60p each!

I have added a pic of the ballraces above.

Mine came from a local supplier, you do have to buy in bulk though. you could try SMB

    lots of bearings here

Also ebay from Hong Kong, they will arrive in about 2weeks. whatever you do if you pay over ??1 you are paying too much

  12. Space is nice but im not into cat swinging!

Unstoppable is something I have never been......and the BG is quite safe there for the time being

When I saw the house I had designs on the cellar straight away, fortunately it was bone dry so i only had to stud it and insulate it, i am rather pleased with my plastering though

Actually if i really had a mind I could squeeze a roundy roundy test track into the space
