Brixton Hill tram depot and its Trams
thirty2a replied to thirty2a's topic in Trams & Tramway Modelling
Hi Colin, my pops is Steve Parker, I remember Peter he was an instructor on the buses and made a decent home brew! and Mike I have seen exhibiting a few times with the Kew layout and an O gauge layout of which the name escapes me for now.. Dave actually called me 'bug' at Fairfield halls exhibition as dad calls me Ants! Long time ago though so I doubt he will remember. Tony -

glad you too are catching up, I think my dad would remember you both as he was an old member of the Carshalton and Sutton MRC as was I for a short while back in the day.. Tony -

Yes Colin, it looks like the LCC traverser was a more simple design. the later cross brace design appears to have either 2 or 4 cross bracing in the middle sections… Tony -

Found a great shot of an E class broadside on Clapham depots traverser, plate 29 in South London Trams 1903-1933 Further to this there appears to be at least 3 variations of deep traverser over the years. -

It wasn't last time I saw it but what an experience that would be now! -

Perfect thanks Colin, plenty to work with now. yes I saw that there had been a stabbing outside West Croydon today sadly. I was saying today that it was no different when I was a teen back in the day, Croydon has always had a reputation, not sure when my pop was a lad though, must ask him, he is a Croydonian, grew up on Pemdevon road. I had a few years in a high rise in the Wallington area on a well known estate. Before we moved which was notorious back in the ‘80s. hope you are ok mate, thanks again for the pics. Tony -

thanks Colin, I'm sure you know it's called Croydon university hospital now due to the unfortunate nickname it had :-) back to the traverser, I think I have had a plan so cunning I can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel, watch this space. I had a flick through a few books last night and found some interesting shots particular on page 109 of 'London Trams' by John Reed. -

Spent the day 're reading all the posts ( I was working guv, honest) still have a few pages to go through.. However going back to the early days I'm tempted to 're look at the RnR option if that's still ok, I ordered some self adhesive numbers off fleeplay so don't be surprised if you start seeing Felthams with route 90 and depot appearing soon ... -

Thanks Colin, spot on that's the exact picture I had in mind! So no excuse now I guess.. Plasticard, balsa and glue here we go. Looks like hand/guard rails are white and general equipment is grey\green so controllers black body and brass top same as trams.. -

..now what would be very helpful is a color view inside a depot preferably with the Traverser in view! now I recall some color views of Penhall road tramatorium with a view of a Feltham behind a pile of scrap with the traverser in view but of course that is the only view I cannot find so must have imagine it. I know the traverser was shallow type but any color would be helpful. I imagine the main brickwork would be cream and or Red, traverser pit white maybe? inspection pits dirt plain red brick or white. the traverser possibly green or grey? black as a last resort. looking to mock up a traverser this weekend as want to do some work on the pit next week at the club ... -

So thanks to Google Earth I believe I have got a geographic location to fit ANSA Southern. Albuquerque, Newkirk, San Jon, Amarillo Southern. I am not sure how much chance there was of this being a narrow gauge (or any gauge) for that matter but there is signs of closed lines in the area so New Mexico might have been?

some polaroid's from way back, possibly Carshalton and Sutton Fairfield halls exhibition with the stock in use, layout unknown.

I will have many questions soon Colin, manly about the interior of the pits particularly the look of the shielding around the conduit.. as far as I can tell looking at many pictures there appears to be brackets holding up wooden planking but for obvious reasons there are not so many clear pictures, so hope you may have some insight on that one. I have acquired some threaded rod for the traverser so that project may get under way soon. Tony -
