  1. I would imagine the average small coal merchant much preferred a 10 ton wagon (or better still an 8 ton one) to a 20 ton jobbie. After all, he had to unload it, sharpish, and he might have nowhere to put the coal but the back of his lorry. The GCR was another railway that tried to 'encourage' the use of larger goods vehicles, but by and large the punters weren't having it. So the big coal wagons (20 ton and upwards) ended up being used for loco coal. I don't think the big 15 ton vans were a massive success either - most were eventually converted into fish trucks.
  2. In the Peak District I believe that one issue was that loops were too short for longer trains, and the shorter trains were light enough for small engines to manage. In other words, to have used larger engines economically would have involved spending £££££s on civil engineering. That covers the goods trains. The Midland's policy on double heading passenger trains is harder to figure.
  3. It is an ugly engine, and I'm sure Mr Robinson and Mr Johnson would not approve, but in a way it's so ugly it's beautiful. And it's certainly a fine piece of modelling work.
  4. I have got my GC track jigs, so all I need now are the PW materials to turn out authentic track by the yard. Just hope VAT doesn't go up to 25%!

      who does GC chairs?

No one. But you can get four bolt chairs which are a pretty good substitute. (Really should be two bolts, two spikes.) The 3 bolt inside keyed chairs used earlier are more problematical.

  5. Someone once remarked that living with me would be like living with Spike Milligan. I don't think she intended it as a compliment, but I have always cherished it as such. It was also a remarkably perceptive observation - guilty as charged, m'lud.

Comparison to one of our most beloved genius'. Makes you proud to be an Englishman, sir!

  6. Dropped a brass buffer housing on the floor. Spent a good 10 mins crawling on the floor, looking for it with no success and many curses. Then I felt something like a small stone in my slippers. Yes, it was the buffer housing! I bet I couldn't repeat that trick for

  7. I think the most likely power at this period would be an ex-LMS 2-6-4t. Not sure whether Stanier or Fairburn. Not my period and my memories don't go back quite that far. Between Central and Guide Bridge, originally an A5, later an L1, then as per above, with the occasional substitution of a B1 or LMS Crab. No shortage of interesting motive power at this location, at least not until the diesels won.
  8. Oh heck! I have finally gained access to a photo of a Great Central Colliery Company PO wagon. And now I want one! Pity I don't know the correct colouring and the small lettering is illegible. Grrr.

  9. I hate rub on transfers! Because the ones I am using are a bit old they are pretty much falling to pieces as I apply them. So I am having to 'correct' them using white ink. The only consolation is it's good practice for doing hand lettering.

  10. Took a 3 plank wagon out on to the patio to prime it and promptly dropped it onto the hard surface. Amazingly, it just bounced - no damage done. Resin is not as fragile as some people think - evidently.

  11. Something is very wrong with a system when so many people who are willing to work and have considerable talent to offer cannot get jobs. I hope things change soon for all in this dreadful position.
  12. You know the one that gets me? The sign that says: 'This door must be kept locked at all times.' Why is it a door then?
  13. Wow! I'm amazed that Northenden Junction still had its CLC nameboard so late. Thanks for the great photos.
  14. Reminder to self - never accuse anyone of being pedantic. Not when you have just checked the diagram book to see how many leaf springs were fitted to a particular wagon in 1909.

Eight. And I doubt anyone but me will ever notice. In fact, I probably won't myself.

  15. Damn! My masking tape didn't mask! At least, it didn't produce those nice straight edges that one ought to get. Much fiddly work with a small brush beckons.

  16. Just home from Llandudno, and now the question of the day is whether to spray paint or brush paint the Birley wagon I am working on. Lot of transfer lettering to do either way.

  17. Putting the capping on a wagon side, I managed to damage the paintwork on the top plank. And although I have sprayed with the same colour, it is dead obvious! Oh well, looks like that wagon had a replacement top plank and is also going to qualify for a good coat of weathering.

  18. A nice Edwardian brick tramway depot with 'Corporation Electric Car Depot' above the door; preferably in 7mm. :-) Many of these were reused as bus depots are were still working as such in the 60s and 70s, and a few survive, often in alternative employment. So it would fit any urban scene from 1900 to 2012.
  19. The axleboxes on the GC horsebox do have a look of a particular kind of GC axlebox. Whether they are correct for this model or not I cannot say, but they would pass my eye until I found a photo to prove them wrong.
  20. The more photos I see of this layout the more impressed I am. i particularly like the subtle weathering of locos and stock, which makes them look very realistic.
  21. I have a memory (a rather vague one) as a young lad of having seen a large blue diesel running through Gorton and Openshaw. I can only think it was the prototype Deltic - what else could it have been? - perhaps being transferred from the LMR to the ER, which I believe happened in 1959. Please do not use this report as a firm source. Confirmation would be necessary - but I definitely saw something, and it was pretty darned impressive.
  22. Hopefully it will be extended from Dore to Manchester and then the Euston-Picc trains can have some much-needed competition. I suspect that those dodgy MR tunnels between Chinley and Dore might rule this out though.
  23. Have to finish a few wagons, including some that I still need to buy odd parts for. Then it's onto the J63, assuming I don't bottle the project. Not built an engine myself in years...
