  1. Attractive box at Barnstaple. Seen here in 1976.
  2. An even younger Captain admiring Blue Anchor in 1975!
  3. The same Captain a tad younger 9 years earlier in Bradford Junction.
  4. St Blazey, with a certain Captain seated at the end.
  5. "its path" does NOT include the pavement, where I see cyclists. I expect to be able to walk on the pavement without having to look out for/be mown down by cyclists. There was a pregnant woman at work was mown down by such a cyclist while she was on the pavement, lucky for that cyclist she and the baby (when it arrived)were OK. I'm not sure if the cyclist could be done for manslaughter of an unborn infant?
  6. A suggestion for a similar shed on the Camerton branch contract was it could be a watchman's shed. It is interesting comparing the pictures - a lot of similarities. I have seen a watertank on the Camerton contract - but can't remember where it is!
  7. The shed could contain a donkey engine that was connected to the contractor's engine - like at Marlow (for example).
  8. Well that's quite easy - price! The variable transformer devices cost a lot more - but gave better control.
  9. I am reminded that I would have people ask to operate my layout at exhibitions. That was because it had very prototypical operation (interlocked lever frame, single line token instruments), that was very easy to pick up if one had a knowledge of how the real thing works. They felt privileged to operate it.
  10. Very inspiring modeller, but the last time I spoke to him was when I invited him behind my layout Clutton at the St Albans show in 2013, he was very interested in how the staging roads worked.
  11. I for one would not volunteer to assist on a layout I've only seen in pictures. Remember, you are putting on a show to paying visitors. It is incumbent on you to put on a professional show. Operators who turn up on the day cannot be expected to be proficient in the nuances of operating. It would be embarrassing for them, as well as you the owner. When I was exhibiting, I would take friends, and we would have a weekend away. Highlight of that was taking the layout to Utrecht - one could hardly expect to turn up there and drag someone off the street. This problem should have been thought about before any wood was cut for the baseboards.
  12. Or the people that moved from a city to a village, then complained about the church bells. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-20572854
  13. Here's a picture of my usual arrangement, but the decoders (Lenz) and capacitor have been dispensed with/replaced. Steeply inclined 10mm Mashima. My locos are built for high mileages, and were not expected to fail under arduous exhibition conditions.
  14. I would choose that combination. Excellent motor/gearbox combination - I've used several in (GWR) pannier tanks. I think your question shouldn't have been asked in card structure forum by the way - better answers elsewhere!
  15. They were good photos, there was no need to hide them. Maybe you should start a new thread on that topic? I have got a few pictures of closed derelict stations as well
  16. The OP asks for pictures of stations "that were in use" at the time.
  17. Have you seen the current rate of return - compared with the 'rate of inflation'?
