  1. Have you noticed on the Amazon advert 'Pompey destroyed in 79AD', the Alexa moves itself as the camera focuses in. Creepy or what!

I don't think an ordinary Roman, citizen or slave, would know anything about the Anno Domini dating system (Popularised by the Venerable Bede in the 7th/8th century).

Year dating in Rome around then was by reference to  the current Caesar and the Consuls for the year. So if the poor bu@@er had his wits about him, he might have blurted, in Latin, something like "its the Year of the Consulship of Titus and Vespasianus", or if an intellectual, "Year 832 since the founding of Rome".

The movement of an Echo device is the least of the annoyances about that futile ad!

      Hehehehehehe...

btw Pompey was a Roman general who died over a century before the eruption of Vesuvius, which destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum and other places......

      They were relegated shortly thereafter.

  2. On the Talyllyn different colours are used for the different block sections - yellow Wharf-Pendre, red Pendre-Brynglas, blue Brynglas-Quarry as seen here at Brynglas. And no they are not interchangeable (!) but with only four configurations the new tokens in use Abergynolwyn-Nant are yellow and fit in the lowest section. However - there might be questions asked!
  3. On this date in history 14th May 1951, 70 years ago. The first train in the world was run by volunteers of the preservation society of the Talyllyn Railway. https://www.talyllyn.co.uk/
  4. OK, it's not a signal box, but a blockpost but to celebrate 70 years of preservation on the Talyllyn, here is Pendre. The frame was originally locked for signals - as evidenced by the spare levers.
  5. Just rescanned these pictures of Frome North in 1975, showing its location on top of the embankment.
  6. Narrow gauge? You mean plateway!
  7. I'm not sure this qualifies! It controls trains. It's a good day out. Bekonscot 2013! And interior!
  8. South Wales. Barry (Barry R) 1986 Barry Island 1986.
  9. South Wales, Johnston (GW) 1980, Haverfordwest (GW) 1980, Carmarthen (BRWR) 1997, Aberthaw (Barry Rly) 1996.
  10. Haha, this bit is level! However, how did this Ffestiniog slate wagon get to this location at the bottom of the incline? 1987
  11. It certainly is an odd sort of place, but well worth the effort of getting up there. No abandoned rails in this picture, but sleepers! On the trackbed between the top of the Rhosydd incline and the mine. Vapour trails in this - it was 2009!
  12. Bedwyn 1977, Lavington 1978, Bradford Junction 1978 (interior on page 3), all GW.
  13. A lot of buildings on minor lines were never repainted from GWR days. The colour pictures I've seen of Fairford and Lechlade (1961/2) clearly show light & dark stone.
  14. Yeovil Junction 1978, Yeovil (Pen Mill) (GW) 1976, 1992 and 2008. Yeovil South Junction (GW) 1976.
  15. I visited Carterton once in 1976.
  16. Actually, there was a box at East Somerset - closed 3/5/1965 (by the level crossing), but there is no Z in the title ...
  17. You have got a lot of information there. You can scale off the OS map. You can count bricks to confirm the OS figures. The height is determined by the canopy - which 'may' be to the load gauge. Don't forget to add the height of the track. I would make a card mock-up with the dimensions, before committing to anything more permanent. If it passes the visual test, leave it for a few days and check it again.
  18. A couple of pictures of Aberystwyth, plus Newtown Cambrian (Dutton) in 1978.
  19. Near Heathfield on the line to Exeter - https://tinyurl.com/28b5a9c8 Same place in 1975.
  20. I was on a visit to Wales to photograph the remaining signal boxes on the Cambrian. We had driven to Aberystwyth, my friend travelled on the VofR, while I caught the train the Dovey Junction. The VofR would always be there, but the boxes days were numbered. It wasn't raining at Aberystwyth, but tipping down at Dovey. I had run out of 35mm film, and only had the Rolleiflex with film. Having taken the photos (only 12 on 6x6 film!), I walked along the footpath to meet my mate in his car. I was soaked!
  21. Well, I can do 1978- when the goods yard was in! Plus Dovey Junction BR(WR) in the rain in 1978.
  22. Machynlleth BR(W) 1997. Signaller Ringo on right.
