  1. Copper slip grease on the mating face(s) helps, but you don't want to get it on the threads. Ed
  2. Dare one ask how much the fare was? Ed
  3. <nerd mode on>there is no point in "checking" the torque afterwards. If they have overtightened them (and they always have) then OF COURSE the torque wrench will click! I did try to educate a chap once but he informed me that he had been fitting f'ing tyres for 15 f'ing years and asked me not to f'ing tell him how to do his f'ing job.<nerd mode off>. When I was fitter I would always re-do the things at home-many bent tommy-bars and split sockets-but I don't envisage changing any wheels in the near future. Ed
  4. Thanks Martin. Yes, I thought Legoland was brilliant when we took our two boys. It had not been open long, and I gather much has changed. Do you still get the cable railway down from the entrance to the park? My sons could not understand why I was interested in that! I also enjoyed the roller coaster. My wife and children thought it was tame-even at an early age. All of them went on to enjoy the famous rides at Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and the others. I did ground-level activities while they were so engrossed. No1 son's now wife comes from Black pool, and he has been on the Pepsi Max Big One there. Just looking at the video's scares the wotsit out of me. Ed
  5. Morning all. I got into Old Warden yesterday to see the Vulcan's last display. Am very glad that I did, also very impressed by the aerobatic guy and by a tail-less glider that didn't look as if it should fly, but did some impressive stunts. I remember the WW1 Bristol Fighter from my Airfix days and was pleased to see one flying, surprised by how big it was. Knackered when I got home, went to sleep in the chair. Woke at 11.30, saw to the (hungry) dog and went to bed without eating or testing my blood sugar. Woke up this morning feeling shivery and tested my blood . It was 3.8 which is the lowest it has ever been for me.When I was last in hospital I was told "4 is the floor, 5 to drive". Generally I struggle to keep it in single figures. Sugar is up to 8,6 now after a marmalade butty and a cup of tea. What do our other diabetics think? I'm no longer shivery and am now off to do my usual Monday job of getting the house into a fit state for my cleaning ladies who come just after 9 when they have got their kids off to school etc. Pop in later Ed
  6. I think that a large part of the battle with this kind of project is coming up with a snazzy new name such as Metro-Link etc, which sounds like neither tram nor train, but a new form of transport. Is it the public who are shallow or my opinion of them? Ed
  7. Mine was badged as a Morris, but the DVLA (was it Swansea back then?) wanted to insist on it being registered as an "Austin-Morris", I had to take it to the Local office at Luton to prove my point. The man came into the car park and said "of course it's a Morris-it's a Minor!". I still have the trade plate in my possession. One careful owner before me, the Express Lift Company. I had her repainted in Triumph Sapphire blue, fitted wider wheels and named her Touchwood, because touch wood she'd be better than my previous car. Ed
  8. Awake at a silly time. Does anyone know the time the Vulcan is due at Old Warden later? Ed
  9. Told you that deck wasn't big enough. Ed
  10. No, but they comment on the effect on house prices. Ed
  11. I find that washing black garments makes them pale black. Ed
  12. The problem is that you can get an early 2000's SL55 AMG for 10-12 Grand. Convince me why I shouldn't, bearing in mind that I was at quali for the UK GP when these were used as Safety Cars, and you could hear the roar of the V8 above the F1 engines. (should this be in "new cars"?) Ed
  13. BTW, is there any consensus on when a new car becomes an old one? Ed
  14. The Aston DBS probably still exists. I bet the wonderful HA Viva in front doesn't. Ed
  15. Not if he took his bl66dy Bradshaw he wouldn't! I enjoy Tarrant and think he is rather good at his job which he has been doing for many years. Ed
  16. Staddle stones as purveyed by Drew Pritchard? Sherry-Ouch! Hope it's improving. Ed
  17. Morning all. Awful news from the US again, and they say there's nothing they can do about it! Ideally of course they wouldn't start from here, but surely it's time to bring in some kind of gun regulation? Pete, if Emmylou has got better looking (which I don't really agree with) I think it has a lot to do with money and surgical intervention. She still sings achingly beautifully though. Right-ho, off to see the podiatrists and my lovely Diabetes Nurse, then back home and gather the paperwork together for my catch-up and review with my GP later on. Ed
  18. Vindis. The web site says it was started by Frank Vindis, a Czech Spitfire pilot. Certainly two of the top men are still Vindises (Vindii?). Ed
  19. When I bought a new car (only once) I insisted that no sticker was to be put in the window, We agreed that their name etc would appear on the number plates (I believe that is compulsory now) but that I wouldn't pay for them! I did allow them to put a sticker on the tail-gate which said "Vindis" in a very attractive script and I thought people would think it was Latin and I was really clever. Ed
  20. I saw Pink Floyd at the free concert in Hyde Park in 1970. It was where I had my first and only experience of drugs-I presume it was cannabis as it was a cigarette that smelt very different from my parents' De Reszke filter tips. I pretended to smoke this thing for social reasons, but it had no effect other than making me feel sick. Ed
  21. Is that why you had the deck built, Ian? Ed Does the thrower enter your property or throw from the street?
  22. Curvy paths are all very well, but wait until the "lines of desire" start to appear. Ed Taking 3 sox out will increase the chance of a matching pair? Sorry Jack, didn't see your post. Should the plural of spouse be spice?
  23. The pair of Herberts may have been employees on minimum wage or possibly offspring of the business. I have known a few well-established small businesses ruined by arrogant, spoilt offspring. The nice lady in Norwich may have been the proprietor, friend or family or possibly on commission. She could, of course, just have been a good employee. I also think the age counts in both cases, but I notice that you made no comments on her hairstyle, dress or piercings! Ed
