Absolutely cracking bit of modelling, and difficult to think that its N gauge. I can remember that little hut at the end of the fence. I was at the railway in 1995, during the ill fated visit of D212 Aureol, the loco had knackered battery

Now that is nice, to good to hide at the back of the other buildings, me thinks

Hi, the DG's are not that difficult of time consuming to make up, an i have now a few items fitted with these. I actually found them very easy to set up and they worked first time. Do you have to fit every item of stock with them, or could you get away with end of rakes ?
Have a look at this, it may help

Hi
Rather than give up the project all together, would it not be better to sacrifice the prototypical looks of the spoked wheels, In favour of disk wheels.?

Lovely Pete, I actually had 417 on a train to Kyle, it was in January 1989 (think) it was raining, and I had, had a sleepless night on the Glasgow QS overnight to Inverness due to a guard, who was determined to check tickets, at every shack. It was the first one out of Inverness, and I can remember getting to Kyle and heading for the cafe at the top of the station ramp, and demolishing two bacon buttys. Happy days!

Nice work Frank
Those Crinch multi-way connectors are just the job, but if you haven't got a stock of them and need to buy some new, be prepared for a shock (in the wallet area!)

Hi all
Pete, yes I had looked at putting the loops at one end, and this might be an idea. Most of the stock will be in block trains, with a couple of PW trains fitted with auto couplings, to allow some shunting activity in the yard. I will however only fit the hook on the locos, and most will only have it one end and I may be able to include the hook on the snow ploughs.
Jerry. I hadn’t come across that decoder, but it looks and sounds good, I was looking at Mini MSW last week at Railex and was impressed at the sound fitted diesels on that layout.
Next job, a bit more detailed design work, time to get Templot going.

Hi all
First Pete, there’s a nice Scottish layout in the 2mm mag this month, point taken, pardon the pun, start small with a bit of trackwork, maybe the south end loop points at BoO. Time scale, not really, but it would be nice to think I have something to take over for the Glen, when ether I get fed up of it or the exhibition goers. I do have the 0-16.5 slate quarry, but to operate that at a two day show, sends you loopy.
Simon, I spent most of the show around that layout, it works well, actually faultlessly, I am hopeless with putting faces to names on this forum, and intact, as I came away from the show realised who Jim S W was, besides been next to him when I was at Nottingham show.
Shortliner, I see where you are coming from, and I will look at the plan again. At this stage I am only thinking about it.
The layout will be 8 feet diameter, this size is determined by the space in the workshop, and the ability to fit in the car. Bridge of Orchy lends itself, to the plan as the prototype is on a curving formation.
Tony, take your point on the number of boards, I will have to play around. The main problem will be space, the idea is that a scenic board is twined with a flat fiddle yard board, to save space.
Anyway, thanks for all your input, its given me a few things to think about, I will keep you all informed of the progress, which will start to pick up pace after Glenuig at Wigan show.
Thanks
Gary

So how was the job done before preservation?
What was the damage to the component and what was the cause of that damage?
regards, Graham
With an overhead crane, roof off, and a crane straight out and in with the new one.
Frost damage, its a problem with diesel preservation, ok we could use antifreeze, but this tends to find its was through cylinder liner seals, when left standing for months on end.

Hi Pete
there's not a lot to say, but that last photo has nailed it, spot on. I think it's the best 2mil shot I have seen this side of Che Tor. The slime on the sea wall is suburb, you can smell the sea.
Its just all come together

More research needed Frank, try doing it in the bar of the The George III Hotel!

Looking good Pete.
Can't wait to get the next few weeks of exhibitions out of the was, and then I can start a bit of 2mm modeling!

Hi Pete
I think you have got that backscene spot on, and the model could not be based on anywhere else than Kyle. Overall, the models coming on a treat, and it is giving me some incentive to get my self into gear, and have a go at the 2 mill stuff.

Hi Pete
I sort of agree that it needs toning down, but before you do have a look at the geography. These are not distant hills, and in fact only just over a mile away on Skye. As I have said, it was a horrible but typical day, but with little mist. I would have a go with one between, the first and second test photo.
Hope this helps

Situation at a recent exhibition
“Did you make it yourself”, he says has he approaches with the exhibition guide, “no its Hornby cat number R436288”, “Oh really , it says in here it was made by a Gary fella”.

What colour did you paint the track?

Hi frank
Sorry to hear of your problems, and hope things work out, I was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago, and have found it almost impossible to shift weight despite been physical active in my job and hobby’s, and cutting back on the food and booze.
With all the contacts in the model and real railway world, I have, I have found it difficult to find helpers when I exhibit Glenuig, but I have managed, and this weekend was helped by Wilf or Baldrick 25, as he is known. So I am sure you will find a suitable helper, and this is the place to look.
I have fitted Sprat and winkles, and operate the layout from the front, once you have mastered, or found where you hid the magnets in the ballast! It is possible to operate the whole thing while sitting on a fold up stool.
Anyway, i am following your latest creation, its looking good.

Hi Russ
Glad to see you back modeling.
What about locating your model, on the Kyles of Durness, for the ferry across to Cape Wrath, just a thought.

I have used many “unhealth” and safety methods to get under cars in the past, but never beer barrels, I suppose you need to empty them first.

Hi Russ,
Wow, Your winding me up posting photos like that, its been 7 months since my last Scottish fix , but only 5 weeks to my next. Where of too a place called Kylesku, where ever that is, but I’m sure Ben Alder knows , via ?.
AS for the layout, think that’s the best thing to do when you get frustrated, go for a walk and think things over. I'm watching this very closely, I still haven’t ruled 2mm out for my next adventure!

The “I pencil” sounds good to me, the “I scribe” sounds even better, E mailing the “Intellectual property office”right now.

Hi Russ
Head north west, you know you want to

Hi Chris
Since your visit to photograph Glenuig, I have now changed the layouts lighting, and have fitted it with 3 *6400K colour lamps. I have also constructed (I am a tight, and practical sort of bloke) a couple of photo floods, and have used these to photograph Over Haddon and the slate quarry, with superb results.
There is a florescent tube and energy saving lamps, available, with 6400K colour, which is classed as Daylight.

I used a home made RSU quite a lot when I used to build 7 mm locos. Get yourself some solder paint, expensive, but you don't need to use much of it. Have you got a foot switch with your unit, these can be very useful, when attaching thing like lamp brackets. The part can be held in position with the electrode and the “spare hand” while you control the power with you foot.
