    Welcome!

Hi Fascinating, Skye is my favorite place on earth, and i am of for another visit on Saturday. I never knew of the existence of the plan, until now.. Pardon my ignorance, what was the proposed gauge. Good look with this project Gary
  3. Love the humor I'm off to Oban next Saturday, can't wait. DCC sound fitted seagulls, now thats going to be something to see and hear. Gary
  4. Hi Carl and Claggy. Well she's finally docked, well done to all the crew, and I hope the occasion was marked with a suitable blessing of the liquid type from Scotland. The overall effect looks terrific, and god bless all who sail in her!. Carl, good luck with the Oban project, I would imagine you will be modelling the Eigg before the elevated bridge modification was carried out. (yes there are more Cal Mac anoraks out here!!) As for the Pioneer......... Gary
  5. Lights sound, action?. First of all the point rodding job is over. Looking back it was as challenging as building the track. A bit more advise here, where the rodding passes under the rails, try using plastic strip or rod for that bit and avoid shorts. As i said in an earlier post, i have been putting in some attention to the lighting. After a lot of experimentation, i am finally happy with the results. The lighting consist of a low pelmet, holding 3Â Â dichroic MR11 20w spots and 3 ordinary lamps. The spots all face the same direction, to cast shadows and the ordinary 10W lamps soften the effect and fill in the dark areas. All the lighting is 12V supplied from a separate power supply. Sound, all three of Glenuig's locos are sound fitted, i will post a more detailed description in the DCC sound section shortly. The 27 was my first conversion, and has proved to be excellent. The class 37 is a Bachmann factory fitted example, but i was unhappy with the sound, so i gave this the speaker in the fuel tank treatment. Why then did i have a factory fitted one in the first place, well its a long story but in the end it has helped this appeal. http://www.trainweb....und/bogies.html Gary Unpainted point rodding Lighting rig (upside down) Class 27 speaker arrangement Class 37 after speaker mod and EM conversion.
  6. Ready for a trip on the “mighty Atlantic†too the “edge of the worldâ€Â  Gary
  7. That's done it now. I am now forced to go on one of my epic tours, off to the Western isles. Seeing the the completed model, has has sent me off drawing layouts, for a follow up layout to Glenuig, though this will be several years away. Good luck with the Oban project, want any photos?, I shall be up that way in 18 days and 2 hours, not as if i'm counting. Gary
  8. Point rodding …. ur..... yes. The method I am now using, is to drill out the slots in the cast stools to about 0.6mm. I then drill a hole in the bottom to take a piece of 0.6mm wire about 7mm long, I use this, pushed into holes in the base board. The wire, is 0.5mm square, this is straitened by putting one end in the vice, running 2 meter of wire out, and then pulling at the other end with pliers and all my black country weight. I make my own pin wire like this, but sometimes I have to use a bit of heat to get it to straight. Mr 26power, thank you for alerting me to my error. I can't apologize enough to the Scottish race, more education needed. I shall study a couple more bottles of the water of life. I have found that by mixing this method of studying the Gaelic language, with modelling, produces strait point rodding. Pete Is there such a thing as a 7mm, A0 size boxfile. Thanks all Gary
  9. Hi Claggy Had a look at 20048 yesterday, and it was through steam piped. The valves and bags were positioned under the air brake pipe. Had a look for Eastfield diagram's but they seam to escaped me, i have the ones for the Inverness trains, all i can think is the staff at Inverness were more forthcoming with Tops lists. Gary
  10. Halò Thanks for the good words. Its been a few weeks since this topic reached the heights of page one, so i thought i would give you all an update. Things have slowly been moving along, presentation, water and point rodding have been the latest items to receive attention. The later is driving me round the bend, i am using MSE part and Eileen's square wire, and the job seems to be dragging. I would advise anyone thinking of adding point rodding to do so before you ballast. The presentation part of the job has involved getting th lighting right. I have used halogen spots and tungsten lamps, all rated at 12v, to fill in the dark areas an at the same time produce shadows. I will follow up this post in the next few days with some photos. 11. Hi Claggy Fort William used to keep a class 20 around as a “supper shunterâ€. They liked having such a loco as they could use for tripping, rescues and a replacement for the 37s. They did work the Mallaig trains occasionally, although I never came across one. Fort William favourites were 20148 and 20048 complete with snow ploughs, and think, steam heat through pipe. ( i will check on that, next sunday, its parked in front of 50007 at Butterley) I should have some of the QS-FW diagrams, at home, I will have a look later. Gary
  12. Hi again Don't think the through service would have reached Glenuig, and theres no room for four sleepers a lounge car and the motor rails!. Just spoken to a mate of mine, he says the day coach was still in use in 1990. Hope this helps Gary
  13. Hi Claggy I would say the day coach ended in January 1989. At this time Scotrail were trying to clean up the atmosphere at Queen street. It used to have a fog of half burnt diesel hanging in the air, and the idea was to ban loco operated services from the station. At this time, Eastfeild lost its loco allocation, and became a fuel point, with locos coming from Haymarket and Millerhill. When the loco hauled revival took place a few years latter with the Explorer service, these trains called at Queen street low level, or down the drain as it was known. The thing is, i have no record of traveling in the day coach, and if it had been operating in the early 90's i would have used it By the way, at one time the Euston day coach used to go through to Mallaig, thus forming a direct connection. Gary
  14. Hi Mark Just to say, or a beginner in etched brass your making a nice job of the foot bridge. Gary
  15. Hi Sounds like she's missing a bit, rattling fuel pump tappets and “hunting†on the governor. Attention from the Eastfield hammer needed soon!. Great stuff, i have to look at this thread every night to fined out whats on the sleeper, it will be appearing on TOP's soon, best have a word with Berny. Gary
  16. Hi Awesome Just got myself a sound fitted Bachy 37, think i will be building a PH sound box shortly. Gary
  17.  Mr Clifford Road, you have totally blown me away with your knowledge of the Gaelic language. I need more education in this ancient tong, i have learnt all i know of this from the labels of whiskey bottles, and think i need more material to study. I think a field trip to the Western Isles would also be a good idea (Skye, here we come six weeks on Saturday). Slà n leat
  18. Hi all I don't know if it's customary for the outgoing pic of the week owner to make a speech? But i will start a trend “Friends, RM-Webers, Modellers, thank you for your advice and support, and may you all continue to bless this website with art crated by your own hand. May I take this opportunity, to wish you, the next holder of the honour, good luck.†I think that will do. Seriously thank you all, my partner Mrs Gary “Janice†for putting up with me, and the Kingsford Modellers (and ex members of the long disbanded Stourbridge model railway club)  from who I have learnt the basics from. I have been astounded by the response I have had on my layout, and would like to thank you all for your comments. It seems that half the forum is now a discussion on Scottish branch line layouts, and the other half of contributors, have learnt Gallic. I was going to report on the final big scenic job, river and sea, complete with photos, but this has gone totally wrong. First I started on the river with a thick layer of acrylic varnish. This dried and cracked to a crazed pattern, I had taken some photos of this, and of my second attempt, but forgot to put a memory card in the camera!.  The second attempt appears to be going better, this time I have used PVA for the base coat. Next big job, is the class 37, a split box one. At the moment I am considering 37027 in large logo, a few year or two, out of its time but I think I will get away with it. Just for now some more photos, and Pete, i shall be hunting through my slides to find another that will send you running to buy some more boxfiles.  Gary
  19. Hi all This thread is becoming “tractor tortureâ€. Cracking prototype photos Peter, large logo blue suited 37's for some reason. Claggy, when is 114 going to drop on a passenger, could do with some warning, so i can get on 1S19 off Wolverhampton at some strange time in the morning, to get up for it. 37114, 37209, RIP Gary
  20. Hi again Neil, know the place your thinking of on West loch Tarbert, but the wreck is actually here, Bayhead on the Isle of Scalpay East loch Tarbert. (look for the village on Google earth, and go to street view, and you can see it). I did not model it exactly on that wreck, it would had been too big, rather, based the concept of the wreck in the bay. Pete I don't like to admit it, but did i start someone of on a modeling excursion to Kyle with this photo    More photos to follow. Gary
  21.  Hi all I leave the computer for one day and look what happens, pic of the week and in trouble with the missus again, this time for having the car boot full of bits off the real 50007 !. Thanks for all your kind comments, i quite astounded by the amount of interest. Georgie. I have not considered myself to be a weathering expert, and most of my techniques, are from the Martin Welsh “bible†along with a few that i have picked up from a military modeling friend. I have just received a Bachmann class 37, so, when i paint this one i will photograph the process and post it. Ok Dave, it looks like Glenuig is going to Workington show by popular demand, don't know about Barcelona, don,t think it would comply with Ryanair's hand luggage restrictions, for now Pete, i had better get some more photos. Gary
  22. Hi again Mark, I will also look forward to seeing Glenuig at Nottingham, Unless you know something I don't. I have two bookings confirmed for very local shows so far, but not this one, unless there are two Glenuig's, I which case I wish I had modelled Ashburton!. The water of life thing, I am sure that there are many other Gaelic phrases that could be used, just look at the labels on empty malt whisky bottles, I am sure that you will find something suitable eventually. Claggy I will consider any exhibition invites, so if you want to pass me the details, I will have a look, and see what I can do. Cov guard The seagulls, got some Dart castings ones, but I am having problems with getting them to fly! Being white metal there too heavy. On a previous layout, I had what is best described as a “motorized mobile†with seagulls hanging down on wires, shall I try this again?. Gary
  23. At least they found a loco for the sleeper service, which is more then can be said fro DRS. On Wednesday night they, forgot to provide traction for the Aberdeen sleeper, to tied up with golfex's. Stay well put in 1986, I was one of many wondering around the Highlands with a Scotrail rover in January 1989, to morn the passing of the loco hauled services. Gary
