  1. Great choice! Durham is at the top od the tree for geography degrees. Pc course it is also a mighty fine city and wonderful place to live!
  2. Ah good old Tanfield I always think that every time I'm there.... it's like the stereotypical model railway setting (which obviously never happens in real life...) Hope you enjoyed your trip there. Twizell is a lovely lock isn't she? But different to the usual diet of saddle tank locos too
  3. Thanks Stuart! It would be great to see more of the layout when/if you get around to sharing . What kind of era is it set in? David
  4. What a great idea Shame Pickering Town FC are away this weekend as it could have combined my two favourite things, well throwing in some beer too...... although the fiddle yard telly could offer a live feed from the match at AFC Mansfield!
  5. I know it's not my money (so easy to say) but spending a few hundred pounds extra at the outset to get exactly the specification you want and make sure it is a comfortable, dry, warm, safe and stable environment will be worth it in the long run. You never know, you might still be building/playing with a layout in there in 30 years time!
  6. Very true.... something today which should have been a real positive for my modelling I have turned into a negative through my own warped mindset. I keep telling myself this is supposed to be a hobby, for fun and release from real life matters, so why do those of us who suffer in such ways beat ourselves up given any opportunity...
  7. I (and no doubt so many others) can completely empathise with that. The fear of failure is overwhelming and evokes inertia in me. As with anything anxiety related, it is constanly worrying about things and imagining outcomes, 95% of which will never happen.
  8. Ultimately it would be a boring world if we were all the same. This hobby is for EVERYONE who wants to be involved whatever your interests. Some people want a Crewlisle, others potter shunting with a handful of wagons. There is room for both approaches and everything in between
  9. Ah Whittakers Brings back memories of a happy week in the South Island living on this, roast lamb sandwiches and jugs of Speights beer...... now that's was a balanced diet capturing all the vital food groups!
  10. In Norfolk... surely it should be salt beef rather than spam?
  11. Thanks again Pete, I'm going to do a little more planning but will drop you a line for some further advice in due course if you don't mind. Thanks for being so kind and forthcoming with your help. David
  12. Thanks Ian for your thoughts and personal musings. I've passed it all on. I don't imagine he is wedded to any particular scale/gauge combination the 16mm scale and 32mm gauge suggestion was mine but I am just a novice with no real experience of garden railways at all and, following he input here, was probably naive! Lots to pass on so thanks to all.
  13. Red sauce, brown sauce or no sauce at all!?
  14. Very true Paul, I think you're right. I am also one of those folk who would rather have two high spec models than five lesser ones; quality over quantity....
  15. All sounds very positive Martin (well apart from the impact on your wallet!). You'll be getting an absolutely fantastic space to work in though and it is definitely worth the investment at this stage, both financial and in terms of time, as you will only benefit in the long run. Exciting times!!
  16. Thanks again Andy for the further links! Love the layout, absolutely inspirational stuff.
  17. Hi Rich, Cheers that is fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to snap those vans for me, exactly what I needed to see. They don't look too bad, a reasonable representation as you say and might be a good way of building my stock list for a reasonable cost. Thanks again, David
  18. Again thanks to all for replying and for being so helpful, it is much appreciated. Sounds like the problems with the wheels are fairly widespread. I suppose for £20 or so you cannot expect the world mind!
  19. Hi Andy, Thanks that's really helpful. I'm doodling ideas for a similar space and Trebudoc really grabbed me as an excellent use of the space. Apologies for dragging the thread up from the past but it certainly provides insipration. It certainly shows that you don't need acres of room for O gauge. The quality of your modelling and eye for detail certainly set it apart mind as a fabulous little layout. Thanks again, David
  20. Hi Andy - cracking layout and fantastic modelling, shows what can be done in a relatively small space in O Gauge. I know this will have been explained before, so apologies for asking, but what is the overall size of Trebudoc? Cheers, David
  21. Thanks for the responses guys. I'll see what kind of price I can get them for. The vans don't look too bad to be fair so I might be tempted to go for them. Cheers, David
  22. Potentially, although the issue may be in the length of the freight cars. British short wheelbase wagons obviously require less room than American boxcars so shunting layouts can be condensed and sidings can be shorter. Are you using 40' cars or more modern 50' ones? David
  23. Thanks Dava - that's handy to know. I'm a bit undecided about what to do. Whether it's worth it is debatable even if I can get a bargain, especially if I have to quite a bit of upgrading and improvement to make them usable. David
  24. Well worth the trip if you are able, you won't be disappointed. You can tie it in with a visit to Beamish as well as it is just a couple of miles away. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to have the Tanfield on the doorstep!
  25. Hi all, I know the quality of Skytrex stock isn't up to the standard of others and that the wagons are a little crude but what is the opinion on the 12t vans and the standard open coal wagons? I have the possibility of acquiring some secondhand and wondered whether it might be worth it if I can get them for a good price? I am not a rivet counter by any stretch of the imagination so as long as they are reasonable representations of the prototype I could be tempted! David
