  1. Where on Earth do pre-grouping modellers get transfers from? I am looking for LSWR, SECR and LBSCR loco lining and lettering in 4mm and can't find anything...

I can't see LBSC loco insignia though, just freight stock, others may know though. Glad to help!

I am similarly fustrated. Did chat to HMRS about LBSC and they do have something in the pipeline - so worth feedback to them what you are after ... but probably a year away. However do look at EBM models at http://www.mjwsjw.co.uk/

I make my own! (LBSCR & SECR)Commission orders are available

  2. What is the world coming to? On mentioning that I am a railway modeller, been asked for a "modelling date" where we'll both sit and build things...

Don't use Super glue on the first date. If you go down that road you will be inseparable.

Probably best to stay away from gauge wars on a first date

  3. My resolve was weak... I have just ordered a Hattons Barclay!

I was resisting until I saw the video posted today, good marketing Hatton's! Still, I think industrials look right as a pair :-)

Did you use a Barclaycard for doing so?

  4. Got an interview in the morning that will determine whether or not I get to do a PhD in Railway Safety Systems - looking into fitting steam locos with ERTMS!

Dutch_Master: Interesting thought, thank you! Given that most locos run with support coaches, that's a possibility...

Now there's a fascinating challenge - more like an impossible dream I suspect but good luck.

  5. Agreed to try to repair an old Hornby tender-drive A4... finally got the thing running, set it to run in on the rolling road, then smoke and sparks from inside the motor! Any suggestions?

Jon: Thanks, will have another look this evening. Half tempted to return the whole thing as a lost cause!

  6. When you buy a model online and it arrives, only to find it is older than you are! The box had a sticker "Made in the DDR", which ceased to exist a year before I was born...

Yup, a Piko Saxonia. What a beautiful model!

      Horsetan

I remember when we still had the DDR. I was surprised to find that it produced cheap model locos compared to other HO manufacturers of the day. A Br.03 "Reko" was only about £35 to £40 back in 1988...

  7. Those new Bachmann birdcage coaches in SE&CR livery look rather gorgeous, but £195 RRP for a set of three! Guess I'd better start saving now!

You are right they are very very nice!! I am getting the H Class from my local model shop for that price! But even with the discounts he would be able to give me I can't justify it :( Perhaps I will get some second hand in the future. Until then, I have managed SECR loco lining before so the coaches should be easy!!

    3. Skinnylinny

      Skinnylinny

I'm envious of your abilities at lining then! Even with the S E Finecast SECR transfers I'm not particularly happy with mine... They seem rather over-scale.

    4. BlueLightning

      BlueLightning

Thanks, but before you get to envious why don't you judge for yourself. After all just because I'm happy with it doesn't mean someone else would be. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/107470-oak-hill-lbscr-secr-1905ish/page-38#entry2767340

  9. Got some lovely Gibson trailing wheels on a 2mm axle for my D1, but the bushings in the chassis kit (already fitted) are for 1/8" axles, and nobody else seems to do 18mm non-driving wheels.

Even from the LBSC umber version? Darn, I was hoping I could get away with just removing some lamp irons...

    3. Horsetan

      Horsetan

You're looking at changing the smokebox to a built-up one, plus a tapered chimney and new safety valves (I think), at least. The bunker probably needs the coal rails taken off as well.

  12. Trying to remove the centre screw from a Bachmann RU. Have completely stripped the head, no movement of the screw... Any suggestions?

    1. skipepsi

      skipepsi

without a picture we will struggle but try using a small screwdiver like a cold chisel and knock it round on the outside of the screw with a small tiny hammer.

  16. $!*&! Messed up applying LSWR lettering from the HMRS pressfix sheet... and there's only one set of each size of lettering per sheet... Another £7.50 to get another sheet of mostly Southern lettering I won't use!

      Skinnylinny

So they *do* exist! I swear, if I could ever find them on eBay... I want at least two!

  23. Wondering if anyone in Edinburgh has a static grass applicator they would lend him - a bit expensive to buy just to do a couple of square inches on the shunting plank!

  24. thinks the board to his first layout may be finally succumbing to the moist air of the garage... unfortunately, as we're only renting the garage, we can't seal it up... Time to think about starting afresh?
