  1. Might have just bought a Peco Talyllyn kit with the Branchlines chassis... Fun, given that I don't model in 7mm:foot and have never built a loco kit before. Have I bitten off more than I can chew?

  2. Amazing what a lick of paint'll do, isn't it Gromit?

Painting the wheels of a Mainline loco to remove the big chunky silver rims makes a heck of a difference!

  3. First attempts at lining transfers... Other than getting orange instead of red (whoops!) not going badly at all!

  4. Finally getting around to joining my local MRC!

  5. Building a Revell BR02 kit with my flatmate. Neither of us had realised that it included inside cylinders, complete with cranked axle!

Your next challenge is to make it all revolve and reciprocate! The Br.02 was a 4-cyl compound, just to heap further misery! Deutsche Reichsbahn had them rebuilt to 2-cyl "01" form.

  6. Picked up a very dead looking Triang Jinty with no pickups and a "dead" motor. Stripped down, made up some new pickups and a few drops of oil and it's now growling happily (if a little unevenly) on the rolling road... Not bad for a first attempt!

  7. Well, that's another siding laid... and the last connected up, ready to respace the sleepers. I can finally run things!

Which came first, the Siding or the Mainline?

  8. Time to get the Polyfilla out - my parrot's hungry!

  9. Pretty sure those are GEM levers, whitemetal with brass levers. I'm using them myself! They're part of the Mercontrol (wire-in-tube) point control range, number 1001 Universal Point Lever. The older style of this lever is the type you've described, and sometimes came with a red top, sometimes (I believe) plain grey. See this website for more details. Usual disclaimer: no connection with the company except as a satisfied customer.
  10. First point laid and working with Mercontrol. That was surprisingly easy!

  11. Looks good! What glue did you use to secure the PTFE tubes? I've found superglue won't touch it... It looks like you've used hot-melt glue. Has that stood up to the rigours of use?
  12. Anyone else remember those GEM working ground signals? Trying to get hold of a few. They're rare enough to make me wonder if I just imagined their existence!

So they *do* exist! I swear, if I could ever find them on eBay... I want at least two!

  13. Opened up the Minicraft 1872 Vulcan Loco and Coaches kit this evening. One of the instructions says "All parts will fit. If not, you've made a mistake." Let's see about that...

  14. Really looking forward to Glasgow tomorrow - several layouts I really want to see!

  15. N15class: Yes, that fiddle yard plan has indeed been changed since - the yard above was to see if I could do a siding fan with Setrack points, but having seen the huge improvement in running over Peco Streamline Electrofrogs, I'm loath to have Insulfrogs anywhere on the layout!
  16. Wondering if anyone in Edinburgh has a static grass applicator they would lend him - a bit expensive to buy just to do a couple of square inches on the shunting plank!

  17. Just listed his first items on eBay... Scary stuff!

  18. Trying to fit detailing parts to the new Hornby Schools is terrifying!

Perhaps better to leave them in the box where they belong :-)

Two of my Schools ended up having to go back to the service center after damage to the loco-tender electrical connection (way beyond my ability to solder - I'm not a microsurgeon). Lovely models, though.

  19. Does anyone else find painting the chevrons on distant signals really hard work?

  20. Just got two of the old Playcraft signal kits in the post. Had forgotten how much fun they are to build!

  21. Just got woken up by a bucketful of cold water to the feet. Thanks, washing machine!

  22. Having recently been fortunate enough to be offered the chance to drive a steamroller (a lovely Aveling and Porter 12-tonner "Coquet Lass") I managed to get hold of a kit for that vague type of roller, thinking I could build it up into Coquet Lass. Oh dear! Details missing, added where they shouldn't be, and even on entirely the wrong side of the engine! I certainly wasn't expecting to have to build up the valve gear from scratch at 1/72 scale, but isn't that what modelling's really about? Here's the current state of affairs: And to give an idea of scale, the slidebars and connecting rod, my first bit of scratchbuilding in plastic strip:
  23. Right, well, those of you who were following my blog last year will be aware I was modelling in N scale. This year, a scaling up in the size of my student flat (plus new flatmates I actually intend to live with for more than a year) has allowed me a little more time and space, and as such the N scale has been packed into two shoeboxes, for playing with at a later date. However, I now have a 5'6" x 2' alcove in my new bedroom, and the blessing of the two flatmates to build a layout. Nothing fancy, but a little 00 gauge shunting plank. Before I started, I had a few requirements for this layout. To use Peco code 75 trackwork and electrofrog points (neither of which I had used before, only ever having built one permanent layout before) To use the Metcalfe range of buildings, and have at least some of the buildings built by friends and flatmates To find a decent, cheap, pulse-width modulation controller, or build my own To avoid as far as possible the appearance of the great hand from the sky (see point 1) With this in mind, I opened up AnyRail and Google SketchUp, and came up with the following basic design: where the right-hand side is still subject to change into possibly a cassette or traverser type fiddle yard. A little playing around in SketchUp (well, a lot, I love that program!) came up with this, to get an idea of the scale of the buildings and trains: The building layout is still very much subject to change. I would quite like to use the Metcalfe bus garage to have a shed with a siding disappearing into it for scenic interest, possibly with a lorry poking its head out too... Ideally, this layout needs to be finished (to some level) within a year or two, allowing me to move it if necessary due to a flat move (a frequent occurrence as a student!) So far, my ideas about the points and signal control are to use wire-in-tube, and possibly the old Playcraft signal kits, with GEM ground signals, also connected to the wire-in-tube. Now, all I have to do is get my hands on some of the GEM signals, which seem to be like hens' teeth!
  24. Trying to find old, no-longer-produced products is fun... anyone seen any of the old GEM ground signals kicking about recently?

    1. Horsetan

      Horsetan

I didn't even know GEM made those!

Yup, used to make 00 scale (ish!) working ground signals, I presume to work with their Mercontrol system!

  25. Sitting waiting for an exam... Feeling confident about it, just want it to start so it can be over!
