  1. Dave. Like many others I am very grateful and indebted to you for the photos and memories you provide on your other threads. I also am retired but still wonder where the time goes and so I do appreciate the time you already commit to providing most of us with a daily "fix". However, and being completely selfish on this occasion, if you can find a little time in future to add any more photos of this area I would be very grateful. Rothbury and surrounding area is one of my favourite parts of the country, so beautiful. Adding railways to that countryside, especially from the past, makes a great combination. Thank you again.
  2. Interesting but I would call them and check what they really have in stock, if anything. They may possibly have some stock left from a long time back. If they have got it and you want it, then buy it but I don't think there will be any more available once that's gone. Edit: The site says items are in stock but I would recommend you confirm that by phone.
  3. Indeed it is the Roundhouse. I lived in Derby between the ages of five and eleven (leaving in 1960) and, even now, can clearly remember that lovely smell of hot oil and smoke when passing the loco works and sheds on the bus over London Road bridge. It got into my blood! I used to trainspot at Spondon mentioned above. My father used to take me to the loco works each year for the works open day. Do I remember rightly that it was called a "The Horticultural Show"? By the time I took this photo though I was living in Nottingham and I am not sure what the occasion was for visiting Derby but it may have been one of the open days.
  4. Just going through a collection of old photos I have dug out of a box and found this which I think will fit in the theme. Sorry about the quality but have not had the time to spend on photoshopping it to get rid of the marks. Just thought that it may be of interest to some people perhaps. Always thought of it as "the end of the beginning" as they were all lined up ready for scrapping. I guess it is 1963? (withdrawal date). Edit: May be later as I believe they weren't actually cut up until 1968.
  5. Thanks. Worth a try. Will have a go tomorrow. Edit: Have tried system restore and, annoyingly, the PC won't restore to any previous points. I will now try to reinstall drivers, JMRI, etc to see what happens. It is the fact that I cannot turn the power output on of the Sprog that makes me wonder if there is a device problem. However as it is controlled by JMRI then that could also be the reason.
  6. I have a slightly different issue which is driving me crazy although I suspect there may be something basic that I am doing wrong. I have used a Sprog II (original version) and Decoder pro for some years without any significant problems. I have a rolling road set up on my workbench connected to the Sprog and a netbook. The netbook has run Windows 10 since it was released and, again, no real issues until now. As far as possible all software is updated as soon as available and yesterday the netbook upgraded itself to Windows 10 version 1607. I also noted an upgrade for Java to V1.8 121. Yesterday I used the rig several times to adjust CVs on several different locos without any problems and I believe that this was after the two upgrades above happened (with subsequent restarts). However today I am unable to use the rig at all and I cannot get to the reason for it. The Decoder Pro shows the full roster of locos with all details. At the bottom of the page it states that "Service Mode Programmer Sprog is online" - "No Operations Mode programmer Available". I am unable to command any locos that are in the current roster. If I ask it to identify a loco on the test road it returns "Timeout talking to command station". (Different locos produce the same result - all the locos work prefectly on the layout). The USB LED flashes briefly as the "interogate" commands are repeatedly sent until no response is recorded (visible in the command monitor of JMRI also). It appears that no voltage is produced from the "Track" outpouts of the Sprog but the power light does not light or flash. (I have checked that 12v is going into the Sprog). I am unable to turn the power button on or off - it is permanently yellow (layout state unknown) - in the Roster page of JMRI. I have performed many reboots of both Sprog and PC. System Manager on the PC shows the Sprog working correctly on Port 3 which is the same as the setting in Sprog. My first assumption was that Java had possibly caused a problem and I went into settings and enabled the previous version (and unenabled the current) but that made no difference. Any suggestions would be gratefully received please. Thank you.
  7. Pictures of Middleton take me back to the day we "bunked" Sheep Pasture. It was still working at that time but, on reflection luckily, nothing worked past us. Biked from Nottingham but didn't take cameras with us. Oh, the errors you make when you are young! Thanks again.
  8. There always seemed to so much happening at Kirkby in A. It all seemed pretty permanent at the time. More good memories. Thank you (yet again).
  9. Was advised today that the cause of a almost flat battery on my car is the "Smart" technology that it has fitted. Apparently this stops the alternator from spending too long charging the battery because that saves fuel. This happens even when the charge is low owing to short journeys. Smart? PAH!

Never had these problems with a MkIV Cortina! A whole host of OTHER problems, but not these ones... Simple is good.

Saw a pre-war Austin7 yesterday on the A38 and there's a split-screen Morris Minor locally too. Don't recall any electronic gizmos on either vehicle

Had 4 Cortinas (and 4 Capris). Many miles in all but ALWAYS took a tool kit plus wire coat hanger, sticky tape, elastic bands and paper clips. Mostly managed to fix them but not always!

  10. Spelling of Okehampton in title duly corrected. Apologies for that.
  11. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-39314849 "The train slipped from the rails" - really? Not clear from this report as to what actually happened but presumably slipping was a problem - but was it a problem with the track or train or what? Edit to correct title: Apologies for that - I should have known better.
  12. Hattons have said they will send couplings so that is good. Sorry to hear your model won't run properly. I ran mine in on a rolling road on DC and then fitted a decoder and it runs very well indeed so mine was a minor problem. Hope you get yours fixed/replaced soon.
  13. Yes, the the yellow ribbon was there and the cut out you refer to, but it was empty. Have checked carefully all around and taken the foam out of the box. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.
  14. Thank you very much indeed for your offer Ian but I do have spare couplers that should fit and, hopefully, Hattons will rectify the situation anyway. The thought is much appreciated however.
  15. Not in mine. I have searched the floor all around where I opened the box as well but nothing to be found. Not a deal breaker as I have spare couplings but I have emailed Hattons about it.
  16. Just got mine as well. Pleased with it so far but noticed there were no couplings in box. Is that normal?
  17. Some say that the best way of learning is making mistakes. By that argument I should know everything after almost three score years and ten so why do I keep making them?

because the one thing you learn from experience is that you learn **** all from experience (Fred Cotterell SVR loco driver 1985!)

OK. I'll put it all down to experience then. :)

  18. No. I had one as a company car in the 70s and the wheels fell off. At the old junction of M1 and A41, long closed, by what was K's Garage. I went, noisily, on to the M1 and one of back wheels overtook me going up the A41! Really, honestly. Awful car. Happy days! (not!). Edit: correction - M1 not A1 and probably A1 rather than A41 - memory detail fading after 40 years but certainly overtaken by rear wheel - that will never be forgotten!
  19. Those nice people at Notts Police have kindly sent me an invitation to go to one of their Speed Awareness Courses. Oh well, could have been worse I suppose. (For clarification I was not caught in a residential area. 60 in a 50 limit on a straight and clear B road in the countryside). Guilty, no argument, but question is why we can't get them to put speed trap in our village from time to time.

Highpeakman, I applaud you sentiments, but the relationship between speed cameras and safety is somewhat tenuous; whereas the relationship between speed cameras and money is very firm indeed.

I always slow down for speed cameras as well. This road has about 8 miles of average speed cameras which I observed carefully. The guy in front was doing 40 just to be sure. Where the average speed cameras finished I decided, unwisely, to get past him. The mobile speed van was waiting at the end of the average speed zone!

A favourite trick in Oxfordshire is to have speed traps at the end of villages as people speed up on their way out

  20. Dave. Thanks, yet again, for another reminder of my youth with the Annesley and Linby pics. Great pics. Was it all really that long ago? I blinked and, suddenly, it has all gone.
  21. Updated 3/3/17 http://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/stolen-car-careers-through-level-crossing-while-fleeing-police/story-30175821-detail/story.html Lincoln to Grimsby line. Langworth crash was 'fail to stop', say police Posted at16:41 Lincolnshire Police have described the car crash at Langworth Level crossing as a "fail to stop". The car crashed through the barriers at the level crossing and collided with a Post Office lorry. No train involved. Edit: to add route and update
  22. Just got around to fitting a decoder to my Peckett and running it on layout for the first time. Runs so sweetly and looks fantastic. Hornby, you cracked it with this one!

  23. Attended Doncaster Show this weekend. Great layouts and interesting stands. Generally enjoyable but why are so many visitors so inconsiderate to others? Barging, pushing and blocking stands is only part of it. In Worlds of their own. Left after 3 hours as getting so fed up with it. Old subject I know but fresh in mind again.

I am not so sure of the mefirst. Most offenders are in their own little world and can actually look straight at you but obviously don't see you. Eyes glazed and vacant!

LOL, George had the right idea, after politely asking "excuse me" twice to an old lady he just pushed past her - good lad :)

  24. You've done it yet again! Thanks for the pictures and memories awakened. I remember spotting at Newstead. You could see the midland, GN and GC lines at once. The first two pictures are notable for the amount of telephone wires and poles. Newstead colliery and the spoil heaps are prominent. When I returned to living in the midlands after a "temporary" 40 year absence I kept wondering what was missing at first and, of course, it was the many pitheads and spoil heaps in that area. Not pleasant to look at in those days but a major source of employment that shaped the area and the people.
