  1. Must confess to not having read this thread back far enough until today but I see that you had already come to the conclusion about junking the board underneath the trolley and fitting a CT decoder. I am just in process of beginning to do that so my question is: Did you actually go ahead with that suggestion and, if you did, what pitfalls did you discover? I note that there are four wires between the trolley and trailer (motor). I am assuming that two of the wires carry the pickup from the motor trailer to the circuit board on the trolley where they combine with the trolley mounted pick ups. The two outputs from the circuit board are then just fed back through the other two wires to the motor on the trailer.
  2. I second this request. I have been searching for details of any BR (MR) trolleys in the early 60s but have not, so far, been able to find any pictures or clues as to numbering. Over 2000 pics on this site but they seem to cover the same preserved units (WR, SR and unmarked) again and again. Any MR ones out there? https://www.flickr.com/groups/wickhamofware/pool/ Took delivery of my BR version today and it is a wonderful model. Runs beautifully on DC but, right at this moment, I am studying it very carefully and trying, like many others, to figure out how to add DCC. I have a tiny CTelektronik DCX77z chip which looks like it should fit somewhere (maybe-hopefully!). Edited: Forgot to include Link.
  3. It has been absolutely fascinating to watch this project develop and I have genuinely looked forward to the many updates you have provided. Your excellent photography provided such a wealth of detail on the minutiea of the work that it became totally absorbing. I have actually learned a lot about construction that I did not know before. Much appreciate the fact that you are continuing to provide updates. Thank you for putting in so much time and leg work.
  4. Another pic showing the Wickham. https://www.flickr.com/photos/35476094@N04/8495327395/in/photostream/ With those side sheets providing a possible way to hide a decoder maybe?? Yes I know this was not usual on BR tracks but might be enough to provide an excuse to change the model or even modify the trailer in a similar way making it even easier - we keep seeing prototypes for everything?
  5. Unfortunately not quite true as people were still trying to place orders (which the site appeared to accept) until quite recently. At least that time wasting exercise is now blocked. A great shame to lose the product but at least out of it's misery now.
  6. I do an occassional check to see if anything new is happening but could not get on the Craftsman Models web page today. Not sure when it became unavailable but it looks like the site may have finally been removed. Not before time.
  7. I must have been asleep at that time! I had assumed the "Green Slugs", as we called them then, took over directly from the L1s.
  8. Do you mean the Ivatt 4's? I have no memories of them at all on this line although I am most definately not contradicting you. My recall of those days is not what it was.
  9. We might well have been on Grantham Station at the same time then although I cannot recall seeing the A5s. I think they had all gone by 1960 so I may have just missed them. 61-63 was probably my peak period at Grantham. Changed ECML trains at Grantham about 10 years ago so spent about 45 minutes on the platforms. All those houses where the sheds were! So hard to recall the action and bustle of those 60s days where there was always something to see at the sheds just across from the platforms even when the main was quiet. I don't want to go back in time but there are very many good memories of those days.
  10. I can remember Radcliffe on Trent when it was lit by gas lamps and the trains pulled by L1s. (Early 60s). These shots made me realise just how many "Eras" have passed since then - gosh I feel old now!
  11. Just put the winter duvet on the bed - may stay under it a lot longer in the morning if the forecast snow arrives. Roll on Spring!

I just dug out my hot water bottles! :-D

Is that a sausage roll on springs...? ;-)

  12. My garden shed is possessed by a demon! Although I always (of course) put things away carefully and tidy when I go back all the electric cables are tangled around forks, spades, everything! And why is the last thing I used now at the back and underneath it all? I'm sure I didn't leave it like that.

  13. You have done it again in bringing back memories. This time it was often waiting at Rockingham Station level crossing for the branch train from Rugby whilst travelling south on family visits in the early 60s. Small Ivatts and a couple of suburban coaches - wonderful. Rockingham was the next station to Seaton although it was actually only just outside, and much closer to Caldecott, than Rockingham itself. Thanks yet again. Re the 08 - I was at first convinced it was not in the train but, the more I look at the picture and also at some of the simulations, I have now changed my mind and agree that it is in the train itself.
  14. Mobile phone: ring-ring. Hello. My names Julie and I understand you have been involved in a car accident. *****! How do we stop this outrageous, privacy invading rubbish?

I would imagine that these people have skins made from Chobham Armour to survive for more than one day so need/have/desire little, if any, training.

      Horsetan

Never mind the training. They'll be monitoring it for "kwalitee" purposes.

  15. Trying to reduce my library of railway books. Unfortunately there seems to be such stupidly low prices offered when selling online. Might not be bad though as the local hospice shop will benefit and hopefully they can get more for them.

I gave a load to a local miniature railway to sell a few years ago. They will have made a few quid, so fair enough.

I've bought some good quality second hand books for 1p - yes you read that correct, one penny. Postage was a couple of quid.

Likewise, beast. A penny for the book, but £2.80 postage is common on, for example, Amazon.

  16. It's now approaching two years since the business was acquired which, in spite of the difficulties, would normally seem sufficient to have developed some form of action plan for sorting the problems. Lack of acumen in sorting the problems could make continuing in future difficult. The lack of action on the Web site is puzzling as there was obviously access at one time in order to change phone and email details but, since then, nothing. It cannot be that difficult surely to find someone to assist in changing the Web site and put some sort of explanation on it. The fact that people can still place orders but get nothing (including responses) just continues to damage confidence if the intent is to resurrect the business.
  17. Great shots - memories pouring back. Why can't I press ratings for Thanks, Informative and Like at the same time!
  18. OK. I went away from Nottingham to work elsewhere about that time and didn't really keep up with things properly after the GC closed. I thought I had read that some freight trains reversed at Weekday Cross to get access south after Victoria had closed but that may have been while Awkwright Street was still being used for passenger and the line still open. Must get my history books out again!
  19. Didn't some freight still go to Ruddington MOD depot for a time after closure of the main GC?
  20. Absolutely great to see these pictures as I lived in Nottingham during the 60s and they remind me of an enjoyable youth there. Both watching railways and other interests. The pictures show the condition of the station and stock so do also serve as a reminder of just how dire a state BR got into in those days. Whatever moans we have about the railways these days we should be grateful that most things have vastly improved compared to then. Dave, Thanks yet again for continuing to serve up such great pictures over a wide range of locations and time.
  21. Well that was fun!. My Bachmann Jinty threw a connection rod screw, dropped the rod and threw the wheel quartering out. Finally found the screw - where else but in the tunnel! All back together and sorted now but what a waste of an hour or so. Should I Loctite the screws?

I seem to remember Tangmere did that on a rail tour! At least your models are prototypical!

      highpeakman

Not sure about being prototypical. More like a protest that it was being used to haul the Dapol track cleaner around.

    4. sharris

      sharris

I'd Loctite everything- the wheels might not turn any longer but at least you can be sure the quartering will stay true forever!

  22. Ordered my long desired Midland Compound from Locomotion over a week ago. Order acknowledged immediately but nothing heard since to indicate when I might get it though in spite of £7.50 del charge. Frustrating. Do we expect too much on delivery these days? Ordered DCC chip for it at same time and received that within 24 hours.

Er, Yes. Sort of impressive. At least it still had power whereas mine just stopped and threw the short circuit device into turmoil while smoking.

  24. Correction to above post. Could not get on website when I posted but it is now seemingly working.
  25. At least their web site is down so not still advertising.
