Grand job Nick. I wonder if building the 4mm one is actually making it easier to build the 2mm one. I know what you mean about size I looked at one of my 7mm wagons compared to a 2mm one. Don

Very nice Job. I much prefer the Manors but that will look the part. Don

The Welsh would have been speaking some dialect of a celtic language but with the changes in England the contacts between the various tribes decreased and those still using it such as in Wales and Cornwall became separate. The Saxons were a germanic tribe not celts so how well they could communicate i cannot say. Don

Traeth Mawr -Building Mr Price's house , (mostly)
Donw replied to ChrisN's topic in The Railways of Wales
well it rather depends on where they will be staying. if they have renter somewhere to stay yes they would need a cook scullery maid a footman or two probably the under butler plus maids. However if it is their holiday home they may have some permanent staff there. If however they are staying in hotels the lords valet, the ladies maid, the children's nanny with a maid to help with the children plus a groom if they take a carriage might be sufficient. The same might be needed if they were staying with another family say the lords brother with his own establishment. If there are additional adults of class ( perhaps the lady's sister or mother) they would need their maid (or valet). These 'quality' people as they were often called obviously had trouble dressing themselves or other tasks most of us mastered as kids. Don -
Another is Fletching near Sheffield Park on the Bluebell line. Don

On the Island they did manage to drop a loco into the Harbour at St Helens when unloading it from a ship.

The are various factors about placing wagons for loading and unloading ; some loads need particular facilities such as a crane, cattle dock or end dock loads that need protection from the whether need the goods shed often these are in vans some loads are unloaded over a few days from the wagon such as coal and these needs to be placed so they dont block in others. So the wagons are placed as near to where they will be unloaded. if the coal siding is shared with other uses the coal wagons tend to be at the end. Engines were generally not permitted to enter covered goods sheds so that factored in their placement. Where say there were several wagons to be loaded or unloaded by crane it might be necessary to move some along as the were loaded/unloaded this could be done with a pinch bar or a shunting horse if available. Here on the island we love the railways and walk some of them regularly. The bit that still has steam engines has a terminus just down the road and one of our favourite dog walks crosses the line so there is always the prospect of seeing a train. We can also hear the whistle when out in the garden. Don

My things seem to be moving on. There is plenty for that mouse to do on my workbench/layout/garage etc. Spelling of Surnames was down to the vicar. Child being christened local (probably unable to write) says the name in some local accent vicar who maybe unfamiliar with the name writes down how he thinks it could be spelt. Next generation new vicar from a different region to the first spells the same name differently. You can find it in old parish registers where the name changes. Don

Just watched those videos through again and besides the excellent controls it is also inspiring just how well the trains run smoothly with no hiccups or bumps. Don

very professional looking control panels Laurie. It is good to see proper operation. For me it adds a lot to the pleasure of operating. Don

very impressive Laurie. Don

It would seem Hattons are closing down I had an email. There is supposed to be a sale but the website is not responding. If anyone is hoping to purchase Hattons items there may be problems. Don

My apologies I seem to have set a hare running. This is a hobby done for pleasure. I am happy to buy coaches if they are the right sort as I enjoy building track more than coaches. Do the things that give you pleasure and use commercial bits where that suits you. As to whether my trackwork is admirable, probably not, I dont claim to be highly skilled. Don

Great idea Bob. My cassettes are 1m long which is too long to go into any cupboards I have. Perhaps a cardboard cover would work but would they be stackable? Don

Well that's you settled in. Looking very promising. I have a similar indoor room 10ft x 8ft with an alcove off to one side. A 10ft x 2ft BLT down one side over stacked tubs full of railway bits. A window at one end the door and book case at the other with a workbench in the alcove. There any resemblance ends as all sorts of stuff gets stuck in there. There is a toilet in a box been there for a year awaiting a rear porch to be finished. Looking forwards to more inspiring posts from you. Don
