  1. I have decided to try 7mm gauge.

Recently I purchased a parkside van kit.

Most of the kit went together very well but I cannot see in the instructions if you need to add weight to the model.

Can someone please advise as I’m ready to glue on the roof.

Feel free to come and join this io group. https://groups.io/g/7mmrailwaymodelling

Once you are there, there are no silly questions. Ask anything you like.

  2. 1 Avoid entry level train set manufacturer labelled systems like Bachmnas and Hornby - you will outgrow their lack of functionality very quickly.

2 Never mix DC and DCC, especially with clever changeover switches. It will inevitably end in tears.

3 Buy well and buy once.

4 I have used Lenz for 18 years but I suggest you look at NCE, Gaugemaster, Lenz and Digitrax. The current UK best seller is NCE Power Cab

  3. Was there not a build and review of this kit in the Guild Gazette which caused some controversy?  I'm not a member (or even a 7mm modeller) but I recall being loaned it it to read.

There might be some useful information for the OP in there.

There was a review in the Gazette which was overly critical of the kit. IMHO the review wasn't very helpful at all.

An unedited pre-Gazette version of the review is available on the author's own website here: http://www.raymondwalley.com/loco/other/b17.html

Do not let this review colour your view. I have built this kit and so have several people I know. It's a good kit (with pretty naff instructions for the loco).

  4. I built the B2 which came out OK but I had to widen the cylinder block etch because it was too narrow and the whole thing would have locked up. It needed another 2mm to it. The reason for this is that the B2 was drawn for 4mm and enlarged. I did write to them and in fairness they supplied some of the B17 chassis etches to help out for free. The B17 was drawn at a 10mm scale and reduced so it's a better chassis all round.

I am sure this will build up well and look forward to seeing it progress.

I have built the DMR B12 and you will not have the same problem.

It is tightish but the clearances do work.

  5. I hope John doesn't mind me answering for him but I'm pretty sure it's a San Cheng/Tower Models Pug.  The giveaway is the incorrect smokebox door which is fully 'domed' (like the old Airfix 00 Pug) rather than having a reverse curve making it flat at the edges if you see what I mean.  The Tower 1360 pannier had the same fault.  I'm still trying to pluck up the courage to remove the door on mine and replace it with a correctly shaped one from Springside.  Apart from that it is a good representation of the loco.

    Ray.

    I don't mind at all.

It is the San Cheng one and despite the door it is a lovely little thing. It is fitted with a Zimo 645 sound decoder and runs like magic.

  6. You do not need two controllers.

I split the DCC output from my Lenz system through two NCE EB1 Circuit breakers. One for the track bus and one for the accessory bus. Set the jumpers to the protection level you need.

Here they are mounted on a bit of plywood. DCC in on the left, buses out on the right.

The breaker on the Accessory Bus is probably unnecessary but I like the security.

  7. The Gauge 0 Guild Summer Show - I shall be there, helping out on the HMRS stand, as usual; I shall be happy to say 'Hi' to any RMWebbers who are there.   David

And I'll be there with our layout, Bankfield Road.

  8. You can map the FOs to be forward or reverse or both, and you can map them to any Fn button you want.

You need section 3.17 of the manual which is misleadingly labelled Swiss mapping.

Do not be put off by the word Swiss, this mapping method allows considerable flexibility over which function button drives which physical outputs.
