CVA 01 was a 1960s proposal from the Royal Navy for a class of 2-5 35'000 ton Aircraft carriers, they were cancelled in 1966, but if like me you suffer from an adiction to Alternative History there a nice talking point. Much like the TSR-2 there cancelation is still contoroversial as it forced the RN to make do with two very old Majestic class carries and later three small Invincibles. in refelection the idea of a Nimitz stlye fleet of UK carries is a nice idea if you write fiction, but s...

Nope Hornby club model, just as nippy though.

  7. Bachmann models are very smooth, if you do want relestic sound from your fleet you can install DCC and DCC sound, However not without proper reserch an paratice <-- very important. ScR Gone but not for long
  8. Well Scale is matter of what fits you, I personally model 00 gauge 1;76 scale, which is the most common gauge around and an exelent starting point for modellers. It does tick alot of boxes, its large enough to not cause to many worries with detailing but small enough to fit into most homes. We're lucky in the UK to have two major manufactures of this scale, Hornby and Bachmann, both companies produce very high qaulity models. Another very popular scale is N gauge, in 1:76 scale 4MM = 1ft, in N gauge, 2MM = 1ft. A godsend to modellers who are short on space, at half the size of 1:76 though it is very delicate and not recomended for complete begineers. Again in the UK we are lucky to have two manufactures of the scale, Graham Farish and Dapol, who's efforts have hugely raised the standard over the years. Finally there is 0 gauge, there are many other scales but these are the most common, 0 scale is significantly larger than the other two, definietly not for begineers. In term of what region to model, that also up to you, I personally model the Scottish Region in the border area (I'm supposed to atleast) but its whatever takes your fancy or what really interests you. Do some reserch to find out what really grabs your attention, what works for you in essence. Finally, qauilty control is a real issue nowadays, make sure you now what it is that your perchasing and any faults should be brought to the attention of the manufacturer. Remember even modern models have there faults. ScR Over and out

  12. Hello all, I decided yesterday that for a laugh I would try and calculate just how long a scale length 00 gauge East coast main line would be. Research told me that the ECML is 632KM long, I try to work in metric as often as possible as it is the field in which I have the most experience, So 632km = 6320 meters, now according to research on another forum, in 00 gauge 1M = 13MM, but when 6320 is divided by 13 it equals 486.15 meters which when translated into imperial is 302.09 miles. To cut a long and tedious story short I found out that the actual scale length is 5.17 miles. Now for someone who wants to work to scale this is a serious problem, so how have I managed to be so off? Also How do you convert metric/imperial measurements into 1:76/4MM? What is the formula? For both metric and imperial. ScR

  14. A scale length 00 gauge model of th East coast main line would be 302.09 miles long, how wrong am I?

      alibuchan

about 296 miles out from my calculations. I could be very wrong. I got 5.17 miles

      Boris

I was going to ask how a 393 mile long line could be 302 miles at 1/76! I make 5.17 miles too.

  15. Thank you all for your kind words.
  16. Hello all, there's honestly no way to introduce this so, this morning my oldest and closest friend, who's name I shan't disclose for privacy, passed away after a long battle with illness. I have had the privilege of befriending him for the last 18 years, in every sense of the word a lifelong friend. How do you summarize 18 years of friendship? Thats a question I will be asking myself for the next few days, he was an inspiration, he helped define who I am in many ways, without him I would not be who I am today. I still have a lot of thinking to do and a lot of planning and doing. I wish I could have said goodbye in his final hours, I wish I could have thanked him for being the friend he was, and I wish I could have begged forgiveness for all the times I inconvenienced him. So this is a small token of my appreciation to an ever lasting legacy in my life. Wherever you are I hope you suffering is at an end. My dear friend. ScR

  20. The simple answer is it dosent have one, the model is from a series train sets produced by lima in the 80s, I (mean to) turn it into a fictiticious dock shunter, inspired by George dent.
