  1. More garbage from head office: we've just had a rebuke for not referring to staff as either "colleagues" or in the numbers sense as "headcount". I often wonder if this kind of thing is something our underemployed and overstaffed desk jockeys dream up to bolster their Linkedin achievements/lies section.

57XX, whilst we do have Human Remains, the subordinate training department has now rebranded itself to "Learning and Talent Development" - the result of a new Training Manager being appointed. The latter is now a "Learning Co-ordinator", with her lower level minions now "Learning Partners/Officers". They've also all now got naff mission statement signatures on their emails. You really couldn't write it!

I started faffing around with N gauge for the very first time on Sunday, having only played with OO before - so you're not alone!

  5. After initial experimentation with a Bach/Far starter set, the concept of running scale length expresses on an area no larger than the dining room table is gaining enthusiasm. This N gauge lark could prove addictive.

Not too bad, but at the moment my only stock is bogie coaches. Four wheel wagons may prove more of a challenge. I've a Farish A2, some stock and more track in the post and a baseboard will hopefully follow shortly. I'm looking at 6 x 3' with perhaps an extension to 8' if space presents itself. With a board of that size I can have a good run of track (roundy/roundy) and more than adequate siding space.

I thought that too for a long time, but some of the newer stuff from Farish and their ilk is surprisingly impressive for the size, with little difference from their larger OO cousins in terms of detail. The other concern I had was size in general, however coupling/aligning on track is possible even with my fat fingers!

  7. Well done GB! The Davis Cup is won with an amazing high lob shot after 82 years in the Fred Perry era. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/34957711

  8. On a Hull Trains 180 for the very first time, running down to Donny from Paragon. Never thought I'd be wishing for a Voyager, jeez....

  9. On a southbound HST and there's a woman sat at a table changing a baby atop the seat adjacent despite the vestibule toilet having a baby changing facility. The mind boggles, not to forget the hygiene/cleanliness issues.

  10. Oh calamity! A large quantity of my most favourite cheese in the world has been stolen. Took me a while locally to track any down now. It's like a drug and give a 'cheesy high'! : http://www.thelocal.fr/20151104/cheese-worth-40000-stolen-in-dairy-heist

  18. I see Vermin East Coast now have security guards on the trains with obligatory hi vis vest and the words "Security Ambassador" emblazoned on their backs. A dry train as far as Newcastle, presumably beyond there a special seal is broken and passengers become much more civilised?

Perhaps the miseries amongst us can explain why the 0952 ex Aberdeen is a dry train, yet the 0752 nor any of the other trains North/South that day are the same. As for dealing with the public, I work on passenger ships where if we have violent/disruptive/drunk pax we don't have the luxury of phoning BTP and then locking ourselves in until someone else deals with them.

Quite. Exteriors have all been revinyled but Wifi is proving increasing troublesome and more than a few trains have non working power points, something that's been an ever noticeable issue over the past year or so.

As for the booze, the problem is not people getting smashed on the trains by consuming alcohol bought/brought onboard, as few are onboard long enough for it to take a detrimental effect and to cause trouble. The problem is overwhelmingly those who pitch up having already g...

      vitalspark: It does indeed.

I'm not convinced at all that these measure are necessary, if they were then a full ban would be in place for the route, not just part of it, and certainly not first thing in the morning.

  22. Ive won the "First Injury of the Year" award in my machining class with a cut finger due to someone else's mistake.

  23. First day of the final year at school today

  24. Bought my 30th and last Platform 5 combined volume today, only really got it and the last couple out of slight curiousity over the modern railway which has now almost evaporated. Quite a difference from the first edition I bought in 1985!

  25. I may be showing my age here, but over the last few years I've noticed more and more often that when travelling "on the cushions" Drivers/Guards (conductors) always travel first class, even at the expense of FC ticketholders who have to stand. When did that become normal practice?
