  1. Having a welcome brew on the 0952 ex Aberdeen HST and some BTP bods are patrolling the train and as they walk through they're greeting the passengers with "Good Morning Sir/Ma'm" - how refreshingly polite.

    1. Huw Griffiths

      Huw Griffiths

As long as they're not saying "hello, hello, hello", I'm not worried.

    2. admiles

It's a well known Police tactic to get people to look at them. Helps with IDing

Hope you've got your ticket about your person!

  2. 56 hours to get from Oban to Aberdeen. New record!

      Does it normally take longer?

    2. Liam

      Liam

Took me eight days to go the other way round, but admittedly that was via the Outer Hebrides...

    3. BoD

      BoD

I used to have a car like that.

  3. I wonder what it must have been like at Lime Street, 49 years ago today at 1959 precisely...

  4. There are embarassing batting collapses and then there are horrific batting collapses....

  5. On another VTEC HST, this time there are three coaches with no working power sockets.

    1. Horsetan

      Horsetan

I thought VTEC was a Honda innovation.

    2. M.I.B

      M.I.B

      Don't VTEC make kids toys?

      Brit70053

Yes I thought VTEC was a Childs introductory computer.

(3rd attempt to add this comment today - BT BT BT)

  6. I may be showing my age here, but over the last few years I've noticed more and more often that when travelling "on the cushions" Drivers/Guards (conductors) always travel first class, even at the expense of FC ticketholders who have to stand. When did that become normal practice?

    1. irishmail

      irishmail

Has been for quite a while, but was expected to give up seat at busy times

    2. Purley Oaks

      Purley Oaks

Not usually drivers on VTEC but "execs" travelling to/from York looking busy - they often ensure they have a 4-seat table to themselves, too!

    3. Bon Accord

      Bon Accord

With VTEC and ECT before them, I've seen not only Drivers/Conductors from that TOC in First Class, but also those from XC and Scotrail. The name badges give them away somewhat!

  7. Short straw today, on East Coast's ex EMT HST set - it's like a flashback to early 90s Intercity. That and I'm sat behind a 'jolly girls outing'. arghh...

      Mallard60022

      Time to change coaches....

    2. BoD

      BoD

Can beat that. I got stuck in the middle of a sparkling pink wine enthused giggly 'girls outing' on the way to Carlisle ... at 11 am....... on a 142.

  8. Been doing some interesting reading this morning about the commercially invented sham that we now call Mothers Day. Right up there with modern 'Easter' and 'Christmas'.

      Jim49

You old cynic! You'll be telling us next that Valentine's Day was named after the card makers who thought up the idea.

Organised religion has always been a magnet for profiteers, going right back to the money-changers in the Jewish temple in Biblical times...

Got 2 already, but they are lovely little things. Something about LT livery as I wouldn't have G** locos on my layout otherwise!

    3. Bon Accord

      Bon Accord

Well except a Dornoch 16XX perhaps...

  12. Goodbye nice(ish) weather, cold, snow and high winds beckon on Wednesday - off to the Falklands!

    1. MarkC

      MarkC

I was there on my ship 1983-86. The saying is - "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes..." I've literally seen all 4 seasons in one day down there...

    2. Bon Accord

      Bon Accord

Mark, It's the wind that gets me, I know of nowhere like it for gale force winds to appear out of nowhere one minute then disappear the next and then reappear from a completely different direction a couple of minutes later! Were you down there on Scottish Eagle or Alvega perchance?

    3. MarkC

      MarkC

This is true. I was on Scottish Eagle :)

    3. Tony Simms

      Tony Simms

No, it was called Darlington because it was at one end of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. I can't remember what was at the other end...

  16. Another day, another East Coast HST. Off to Murrayfield tomorrow to watch us beat the Yarpies! If not it's going to be an expensive one as I'll have to buy the beers for the SA contingent.

    1. Grafarman

      Grafarman

We've got Samoa tonight; better step up from last week's scrap with the Pumas..ouch :S

    1. Horsetan

      Horsetan

      I can't imagine that a curry-driven burst would be a pretty sight.

Not so great, but have a couple. Also managed a hurrel behind FR 20 and the two Caledonian coaches. 246's final run to Manuel (non stop) was very impressive in the gathering gloom.

  24. It's that time again - Polish hospitality and a weekend of driving and firing beckons.
