  1. That's not the first ARC PGA hopper i've seen photographed in Cornwall, does anybody know what they were used for?? Oh, and this is view number 50149. It just had to be done!!
  2. For something different, how about an NSE 101, set 101 842 ended its days in Cornwall, although possibly a little late for the chosen period. Oh, by the way. 50k views now. Congtatulations!!!
  3. 56013 is long gone now, I remember seeing it at Toton open day in June 98 partially stripped, I think I've got a photo of it somewhere but I seem to recall that the radiator grilles had already been removed.....
  4. Sorry about that, dunno what went wrong there. Hopefully this works..... http://www.class56gr...uk/photos-56013
  5. Damian, Whichever route you choose to model 56013, a couple of things to note are that at the time of it's Cornish trial it had oval buffers at the No1 (radiator) end and round buffers at the No2 end. Also it had aquired a diamond mesh grille over one radiator panel as opposed to the original Romanian square mesh, see here; http://www.class56group.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/56013_Toton_10-10-93DH2.jpga So, either way, there's a bit of extra work involved. Clive.
  6. Not quite so simple I'm afraid. Hornby's 56013 was BR Blue, the real thing carried Coal Sector triple grey by the time of it's trip to Cornwall. I don't think Hornby have done a sector romanian 56 so a repaint would be required... Rail Magazine published an article, written by John Vaughn on 56013's Cornish exploits, detailing it's workings which were as follows; 56013's visit to Cornwall took place on 27th February 1990. It brought a down speedlink to Tavistock Junction, then took 11 CDA's from there as far as Lostwithiel Down loop. Proceedings were then interrupted by the failure of 47815 on the Paddington to Penzance sleeper on the climb up to Treverrin Tunnel. The 56 was sent to the rescue and pushed the sleeper as far as Par. As there was nothing suitable as St Blazey at the time, the 56 then ran round and hauled the sleeper all the way to Penzance! After that it ran light to Burngullow and then to Drinnick Mill for clearance tests. From there it visited Trelavour, Parkandillack and Nanpean Wharf before returning to Par. Finally the loco ran light up to Goonbarrow, thence back to St Blazey to take the 2200 Speedlink back to the Midlands. Another 56 to have visited St Blazey is 56044 'Cardiff Canton'. There was an event held there on 9th September 1994 to publicise the launch of Transrail, and '044' was one of the exhibits freshly adorned in Transrail livery. There is a photo of the loco there in 'Cornish China Clay Trains in Colour' by Maurice Dart.

  8. Mike, sorry no sign of the 61'6" BG there. Perhaps it's not ready yet because they're still re-shaping the roof......
  9. Hornby had these on show at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this week.

Spotted in the Hornby display cabinet at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this weekend. Looks promising......
  11. Phil, For those who may not have access to the sources quoted, there have also been a few Shark articles in the magazines over the years. From my collection I've found; Model Railway Constructor Feb1986 Paul Bartlett. British Railway Modelling Aug 1998 John Emerson, 7mm build of the RJH kit. Railway Modeller Jun 1990 Nigel Burkin, adapting the Cambrian kit. Anyhow, here are a couple of Hornby Sharks I've had a go at, both re-gauged to EM; Mod's to this one are, Oleo Buffers, Roller Bearing axleboxes, end lamp irons moved, low vacuum pipe and an open veranda door. This one has had its sepatate rainstrips replaced with a one-piece one from 10thou microstrip. Also a couple of verana doors opened up as well. The doors are from a redundant Cambrian kit. The question is, what did I do with the rest of the kit? More on that little pearl later
  12. Really interesting thread this. These photo's reminded me that there was an article in the 1st MRJ Compendium titled, 'The Bucolic Silo' by Martin Pitt. Basically a photo survey around Barnstable Blue Circle site, 13 images of general infrastructure and stock . At the time of the visit there were the usual PCA's present and 3 Ciba-Geigy TTA's. Unfortunately the article is un-dated, but must be mid 80's.

  15. Here's a lightly rusted but fairly clean Bachmann MCO, re-wheeled to EM and the tension locks dispensed with, but otherwise untouched, right down to the bent brake lever.....
  16. Wow, that 08 looks fantastic!! Time to start saving up.......

  20. Hi Ron, The 470 ohm resistor I used is rated at 0.125 watt, chosen mainly because of it's physical size. There's not much roon to play with under that little Lister... I can't remember what the current draw of the of the Portram motor was, but the resistor shows no sign of heating even after a few minutes running. Nigel Lawton supplies miniature surface mount resistors with his motors for 12v use but they get pretty warm. Thanks for the Mikroantriebe link, there's some very interesting geared micromotors there just waiting for tiny locos to be built around them! Clive.
  21. Basic drawings for these tanks (along with countless others) appear here; http://www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/Prototype.html courtesy of Barrowmore MRG. The dimension quoted for the barrel length is 7683mm, thats 100.8 mm at4mm/ft. In 'The 4mm Wagon' volume 2, Geoff Kent extends the barrel by 5.5mm at each end, he scratch builds the extra lenth, but it's probablty easier to buy a spare kit and take slices from the barrel.
