Printing Modern Wagons in N - JHA, MWA, IPA, JGA

They’re about 245mm in OO. I printed one OO gauge one just really to see if it worked; although I suspect there’s interest given the exorbitant cost of the Hornby one!

The overhang on the ends is huge; so devising a coupling mechanism is a pain. I spent ages perfecting it in N, and obviously for O it’s easy with proper screw links, but I’d need to put the energy into working out how to do it in OO. I don’t like Hornby’s answer of swivelling outer hopper bay doors, but it’s probably the best answer for sharp curves.

haven’t done too much in N lately, been starting building a layout to actually run all my stock, plus messing about in O!

I have the start of an Electrostar, something a bit different, and technically not belonging here!

Also sorted the decals for the MWA-B,although it seems they’re all plastered with graffiti these days:

Plus a quick project to replicate the ‘green’ HRA. I’m a big fan of 66004, but my painting ability doesn’t stretch that far!

I really must build a layout, if only so I’m not posing photos of stock on my desk!

With EFE/Bachmann announcing the JIA, and Revolution doing the IPA, I’ve finished off the IPA double-deck car carriers, which will probably spur Bachmann on to shrink theirs (although they only did the less common pairs, so I may be safe!).

A few small tweaks needed, the “Wincar” lettering on the screens is too small, and the inter-set couplers are too long, but hopefully look the part with a few sets!

Any chance of either the physical models or the STLs being sold or made available?

Cheers just I'm interested in trying to do the drax wagon in OO just can't get measurements anywhere

Rail Express - September 2013 had some detailed side and end elevations. Available to buy as a digital copy on Zinio etc.

Conveniently being a continental registered wagon, the overall length over buffers is painted on the wagon. 18.88m in this case:

Nice work on the Electrostar Nick, opens many layout opportunities up!

Cheers! another model which never gets to Rugby, but never mind, maybe a drag or something! As you say, they’re certainly useful, they’re everywhere these days!

Following Jo and Mike’s comments - This link has length over buffers, bogie centres, and top door length, among other useful dimensions: https://www.drax.com/press_release/new-milestone-reached-biomass-supply-chain/

Or you can buy some from me and save yourself the effort, I even have the newer blue ‘scenes’ artwork done :D

I’ve recently come back to the JGA cement tanker. I tackled these a year or so ago, yet despite using some reasonable drawings for them they came out totally out of proportion, too narrow by a couple of mm, and simply scaling the width ruined everything and they ended up looking too squat. So I went back to the beginning. They’re definitely the hardest thing I’ve tackled, so many compound curves, and there are a couple of areas I’m still not entirely happy with, but they’re as good as they’re going to get!

Printed one out and gave it a dusting of primer yesterday, pleased with how it’s come out. This is the later build Ermewa Tarmac version, but I’ve also got the CAD and the artwork for the earlier BLI/Tarmac ones too.

Need to find an appropriate grey colour for them. Audi Nardo Grey struck me as a good match, but it’s not a Halfords colour, and I’m just too lazy to get the airbrush out!

Will gradually fix missing images in this thread, but by way of an update I’ve done the artwork for the Tarmac JGA. Really pleased with how this has come together. They’re certainly an interesting looking wagon!

Two wagons in one week, new record I think! I actually finished these MWA-Bs about 6 months ago, but needed to sort the ride height, which is now done! They still need a Matt varnish, the usual cruel close ups under a spotlight make them look particularly shiny!

I know, I managed to find the images used for those two, but didn’t find the
images they used for the other two ‘scenes’. There’s only so much endless Googling of power stations I could face, particularly when I couldn’t think of how to describe the other two images! 😆 With Revolution doing them and Hornby re-running the OO gauge ones as well I stopped trying too hard.

You sell them Njee? very much like the Tarmac JGA

(Ian T)

Certainly do Ian, feel free to drop me a PM, or you can email me on 3Dwagonworks@gmail.com

I sent Daniel at Great Deltan a rake of the JGAs to let them stretch their legs, as I’m limited to my 5-year-old’s Unitrack layout! They’re certainly striking looking wagons.

Thought I ought blow the cobwebs off this thread. Been going through scaling a number of my wagons up to OO gauge. I’m not a OO modeller, but I do like the extra ‘heft’ (and I may have an Accurascale 92, shhh!), not for this thread though!

I’ve always liked the PCA-STS tankers, now wearing Castle Cement livery. Although Realtrack have done them in N I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on a decent rake. The CAD took an age to get right, they’re a complex shape with all the compound curves at the ends particularly. They’re not perfect, but I’m happy they’re close enough. Getting the ladders to print consistently was tough too, here at (IIRC) 0.25mm. If they survive removal from the printer they’re ok! I could etch them, but that’s just a whole new technique to learn, and I’d prefer not to outsource it!

A bit of work on the decals still needed, the handbrake wheels need separating, and I could do with a lighter grey colour, but nearly there!

@njee20 Looks like a convincing print of a wagon type I have a soft spot for. These were originally hired to Rugby Cement (15 wagons) and Blue Circle Cement (52 wagons). At the time of the Railfreight Exhibition in 1989 we had one spare which was put into an all white livery and carried red CAIB logos on the tank sides and ends. All of our vehicles for the exhibition were white with red lettering. Keeping them looking clean in a still sooty Cricklewood atmosphere was a major overnight undertaking and needed to be done after the dew had settled. So if you have a problem with finding the right grey, one in white would be authentic.

Thanks Mike, a white one may mitigate some of the cement staining at least!

Until I started researching them I thought they were far more recent builds. I was really surprised they go back nearly 40 years. They’re quite a modern design to my eye!
