Hi Jamie,

Lucky you! I too, found the Belgians very friendly, I even had a lady guard wink at me in front of my wife! Although on my trip back from Lux, another guard accosted me in what I took to be Walloon(?), his attitude warmed considerably when I explained that I’m English.
As for their sweet treats, well - delicious!

 I found the various Belgian shunters very interesting though, especially those 0-8-0 versions, sadly I know nothing about them, does anyone here know, please?

I assume you're talking about the diesel ones, John - of which Antwerpen Dam had a concentration.  There are some basic details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SNCB/NMBS_classes

 

Class 71, 0-8-0DH 5 built by Baume & Maupent (1956-57), based at Ghent (FKR) and withdrawn by 1976.  Originally 271.001-6.  (Not to be confused with a later class 71).

 

Class 72, 0-8-0DH, 15 built by La Brugeoise et Nivelles (1956), based at Antwerpen Dam (FNDM) and withdrawn by 1986.  Originally 272.001-15. 

 

Of a similar "long bonnet, end cab" design was the class 70 (6 locos), but they were Bo-BoDE.  Also built by Baume & Maupent (1954), they were longer lived, finally succumbing at the turn of the Century.  Originally 270.001-6.

 

I never saw the class 71, and my (b&w only) photos of the class 72s are not brilliant!

EddieB - yes, definitely the diesel locomotives, wifey would kill me if I started getting into (the very nice) Belgian steam! I very nearly fell for the Trix beauty last year but it was so expensive, I resisted.

No problem John, glad that you are liking the pics.  Sadly I've never yet had chance to go back to Belgium unless some photos turn up from a long weekend in Brugge that I vaguely remember.

Good afternoon from a rather dreary and damp Charente.   The tardis though is still set in Belgium on 25th May 1995. From Brugge, I caught a train back to Brussels Midi.  This lovely beast was waiting at the south end. A quadri voltage class 18 no.1805

A TGV appeared.

Then a tri voltage class 15, No. 1504.

A Eurostar was heading off towards London.

And a class 20 was working in.

1805 then came onto the head of a Paris bound train.

Sadly, tempus had fugit and it was then time to get a train out to the airport and fly home via Manchester.  Time to get the tardis refuelled for the next trip. I had thoroughly enjoyed my 3 days seeing the Benelux systems.

Some very interesting traction in those photos Jamie.

 

in the first photo of 1805, you’ve caught a 1600 on a Germany to Ostend train and a 2550 presumably from Amsterdam. Then 1504 on SNCF corails will probably have started in Brussels and be heading for Paris.

 

2007 on SNCF stock is interesting. They normally worked on the line to Luxembourg - they couldn’t work to Paris as they were not dual voltage - so either replaced an SNCF loco at the border (Quevy) or perhaps was working into France via Luxembourg. I don’t remember if there were such through trains back in 1995.

 

From the stock, it looks like 1805 has taken over one of the Amsterdam to Paris TEEs.

Good morning from the Charente.   The tardis has now moved forward to 1997 and we are in Irun on the Atlantic border with France. I can't remember the exact date but it would probably be late July.  Here an EMU is witing in the station.

And one of the quite beefy looking main line diesels.   I've not remembered to bring my Spanish book over from the shed so can't give any more details.

Then a Talgo with one of the very distinctive Talgo locos all named after Virginsgo loco's.

They might have struggled to find enough names in some of the towns that I worked in.

Fantastic photos from Irun. I don't think that station is photographed that often, so great to see.

 

As an aside, the EMU's in the photo's are Class 470's, which are heavily rebuilt Class 440's, first constructed in the mid-70's in the blue with yellow stripe livery. The Talgo loco is one of the 10 2000T (later 352) locos built by Krauss-Maffei and fitted with twin Maybach engines for use with the Talgo III stock.

Thanks for all the comments.  I've now found my Spanish and Portugese book and the vidit to Irun was on 6th August 1997.  The electric locos in 5he background were 279 001, 279 004 and 279 016.  There were apparently some other 309's around, 013, 017 and 020.

Good morning from a rather grey and damp Charente.  However the tardis is still in Irun on 6th August 1997.

As mentioned yesterday there were some other 309's around, here they are in 2 different liveries.

I obviously managed to get closer to the 279's.

I also managed to get a shot of the Talgo loco from the side.  I looks as if it was 352 009.

That was for Spanish trains till we went back to the Murcia area in I think, October 2000. We were quite close to Cartagena and I managed a visit to the station there.  This Talgo loco was there.  I think that it's a 354 or 355.

333 204 was also there on the head of an older Talgo set on the older livery

I didn't have a stock book for Iberia at the time so hadn't made records of this.   I bought a book published by the Inter City railway Society in 2009 and obviously found some notes from 1997 to update it.  I obviously hadn't found these photos when I updated it so these will get underlined.

Good afternoon from a sunny and bright Charente.  The tardis is still in Cartagena and I now know that it's the 21st April 2000.  First a head on view of 333.104

Another of the Talgo locos that I've just found out was 354 001 Virgin de Covadonga.

Outside the station was this plinthed steam engine, I believe that it was British.

There was a small metre gauge line run by FEVE that ran up towards the La Mancha peninsula. These units were in the station but I have no details of 2331. The other unit is 2601 which is listed as being built by MAN in 1966-73 and then rebuilt by CAF in 1984 from 2350 and 2327.  Presumably 2331 is an unrebuilt example.

Those class 333 diesels are very, very similar if not identical* to the Danish class MZ ‘Nohab’ and are a European built SD40-2 (or SD50/SD60). I believe some have also been exported down under, presumably due to the similarity to the original American product? 
* so close that Roco simply reliveried their Danish models into Spanish ones.

Good moaning from the Charente. The tardis is still in Cartagena on 21st April 2000. Here is a view of the metre gauge line heading east.  The trackwork looks remarkably like parts of my layout.

It's now time for the tardis to hop north and east and forward by a few months to August 2000. We were having a family holiday in Cannes La Bocca.  I was given a pass out one day so took the train to Ventimiglia, just across the border into Italy.  This rather beefy looking shunter was parked near the station.  I don't have ay details of Italian locos unfortunately.1603307617_Slides2000-D010_resize.jpg.e063b79b0d35e37528abe3740370c42f.jpg

This electric was in the station, along with an SNCF 222XX.  The station area is electrified at 1500v DC so that both the French and Italian locos and units can operate.  The Italian ones on reduced power.

This DMU was operating the branch line service up towards Cuneo.  I thin that the stock on the right is an overnight train stabled there.

And what I think is an FS class 656 with a two part body and three power bogies forming a semi articulated design.

Brush up your Spanish. This is a good site for boning up on Spanish motive power, well illustrated, so if like me your Spanish is non existent, you get a very good idea from the pictures. For the last few years they’re working off old steam, but go back a few years, and you’ll find stuff on the diesels recently shown.

Regarding graffiti, I once spent two days (2016) working in Rome immediately followed by two more in Madrid.  The difference in the amount of graffiti I saw, albeit from rather limited samples, on the two metro systems was quite amazing.  Rome's was at Parisian levels but I saw none in Madrid.  The worst I saw though was the following year in Romania where I actually had to travel on this disgusting object.
