Water trough and Manure!

Posted by wenlock , 10 August 2018 - * * * * * · 346 views
7mm Horse Poo!, water trough
Just a quick blog entry to show that a water trough and some horse poo have been added to the scene:-) The water trough was built from 40 thou plasticard sheet, then "distressed" using a rose head bur in a rotary hand piece to give it some texture. The water is a represented using a clear sheet of plasticard painted on the underside with a dark green...

Coal part 2

Duncan Models, 7mm and 3 more...
The uncharacteristic sunny skies above Wales this Summer have meant little time has been spent modelling, motorcycling and other outdoor pursuits have taken precedence. I have however managed to finish the coal yard scene that I started in the previous blog entry http://www.rmweb.co....try-20890-coal/ back in the middle o...

Coal heaps, 7mm, Sherton Abbas
During the Newport show I had an interesting conversation with Ian Pope of Lightmoor Press who was exhibiting his collection of private owner wagons. I'm explained that I was interested in building some coal wagons for Sherton Abbas and would like them to depict coal merchants that were trading in the Somerset/Dorset area circa 1905. He recommended a book...

Horse drawn, 7mm and 1 more...
I outlined the construction of one Parliamentary models wagonettes in a previous blog entry http://www.rmweb.co....se-drawn-wagon/
but have only recently got round to painting a horse to pull it. There then followed an enjoyable bit of research into how horses and carts were connected together. Equine har...

Posted by wenlock , 16 February 2018 - * * * * * · 591 views

There's not much new modelling to report, but I though I'd let people know that Sherton Abbas will be appearing At the Newport Model Railway show on the 14th April.
https://newgog.wordpress.com/  Hope to see you there! Best wishes Dave

The Cardiff Show and a very distinguished visitor to Sherton Abbas!

model railway show, Sherton Abbas and 2 more...
I’m pleased to say that Sherton Abbas has returned unscathed from its outing to the Cardiff Model Railway show. Many thanks to chaps from the Cardiff EM gang who collected the layout in a van that they had hired and helped me install the layout at the show. Apart from the RMweb members day earlier in the year this was the layout’s first public showing. It...

More trees!

Posted by wenlock , 28 September 2017 - * * * * * · 704 views

One of the drawbacks of modelling a rural location is the number of trees needed to make a convincing landscape! There's only so much fun to be had twisting lengths of wire together and I find stippling an Artex/PVA mix onto wire armatures soon loses its magic:-) Despite all this I've managed to summon the enthusiasm to make a few more trees for Sherton A...

7mm figures, Edwardian dress
The President of the "Sherton Abbas Women's Guild" was mortified by the outcry in the previous blog entry caused by the lack of appropriate headwear displayed by some "gentleman" members of the community! The wives of the recalcitrant gentlemen in question were summoned to the following week's meeting and told in no uncertain terms that this "embarrassmen...

Goods Shed part 5 and Population Increase!

William Clarke, 7mm figures and 1 more...
I think we can safely say that now we are in September the Summer is over and thoughts can once again return to modelling. My last blog entry was back in April, so an update is definitely due! I rarely do much modelling over the summer months, preferring to spend time on outdoor pursuits. The beast below is a major distraction from finishing the layout, b...

Layout lighting, LED and 1 more...
Well just under 5 years since I started this blog here we are with the 100th entry! :-) I've been conscious for a while that although the layout is adequately lit by my workshop lights, it could really do with its own dedicated lighting. The layout has got its first showing at the RMweb Members day in Taunton on the 30th of April http://www.rmweb.co.uk/co...

Station building part 6

7mm, Sherton Abbas and 3 more...
I've been meaning to fix my station building in position on the platform for a while now, unsightly gaps around the base of model buildings are one of my pet hates and spoil any illusion of reality in a modelled scene. William Clarke station buildings have quite large windows and these allow a lot of light into the waiting rooms which I'm sure was much ap...

Forecourt gates & the Abbey Woods

Posted by wenlock , 09 March 2017 - * * * * * · 808 views
7mm, Sherton Abbas
I outlined the construction of the forecourt gates in a previous blog entry http://www.rmweb.co....77-signs-gates/ , these have now been installed on the layout. 5 minute epoxy resin was used to fix the posts into position and then various scatters and fibres from the Green scene range were used to blend them into...

Sherton Abbas goes digital!

Southwest Digital, DCC
I've been toying with the idea of DCC on Sherton Abbas for a while now, adding sound to my locos is something that really appealed. The final push came when a friend offered to sell his Prodigy Advance controller to me for a very reasonable price! I had a very enlightening chat with the people at Southwestdigital during the Bristol O gauge show back in...

Signs & Gates

While looking around the internet I came across this picture of the restored gates at Tetbury station

The Vegetable Garden

Greenscene, 7mm gardening and 1 more...
I mentioned in my last blog entry that I thought a vegetable garden might add some interest to the foreground of the layout. I started by forming the soil texture using textured ceiling paint which was then painted an earth brown/grey colour using acrylics. Earth texture
The plants were made from postiche hair covered in Greenscene ground foa...

Station Name

7mm, platform nameboards and 2 more...
Although I've been calling my layout "Sherton Abbas" for at least a year now, the name hasn't appeared anywhere on the layout apart from on the signal box name plate. The platform definetly needed some name boards so passengers had a clue as to where they had arrived at! :-) I made the name boards using Slaters Plastikard sheet, microstrip and a set of th...

Modelling water, casting resin and 4 more...
Now that the scenery at the rear of the layout and the backscene have been completed I've been able to make a start on the layout foreground. I decided to begin with the area immediately below the retaining wall. I built the retaining wall using Slaters Plastikard sheet as outlined in a previous blog entry http://www.rmweb.co....x.php?/blog/...

Another spot of gardening!

7mm, platform flowerbed and 1 more...
Now that the backscene is more or less complete I thought I'd position the flower beds onto the platform surface. Obviously tools are required when a bit of gardening is in the offing, fortunately in my bits box i had the following etch from Severn Models :-) Severn Models etch
Once assembled using 188 solder paste I had the necessary equipme...

Backscene painting, or dabbling with acrylics!

Posted by wenlock , 28 August 2016 - * * * * * · 931 views
acrylic paint, backscene
I've been plucking up the courage to tackle my layout's backscene for well over a year now. Despite reading endless books on landscape painting and having a clear idea in my head off what I wanted to achieve, I was fairly convinced that I would produce the kind of landscape that the Teletubbies would feel at home in! I wanted the layout to be set in...

7mm Gardening!

7mm gardening and 3 more...
7mm Gardening! A great deal of pride was taken in the appearance of Edwardian stations and competitions were held to find the best kept station. Often stations had beautifully kept gardens that exhibited fine displays of flowers and these greatly enhanced their appearance. I didn't want Sherton Abbas to "let the side down", so some 7mm gardening was called for. :) ...
