David Bigcheeseplant
I spotted this http://bambrickstudio.co.uk/latest-news-2/ a new modelling magazine by Mortons publisher of the Railway Magazine
grahame
Hmmm, interesting. I wonder if the new Morton's mag will incorporate the modelling section currently regularly published in Rail Express, meaning it's end in that mag, or REx will go it alone. G. RMweb Premium Legend Posted November 21, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2016 (edited) I know I'm being dense, but on reading link ,is this a one off magazine or is it going to be a monthly? This months issue, available at Warley is free . If there are further editions , presumably there will be a charge. Available through model shops and heritage lines only? What about WHS ? Will it be given away free with Railway Mag? Looks like it might be a wee bit different in approach. With "interviews and nostalgia" . Try anything once Edited November 21, 2016 by Legend
Deltic
Advert on Page 106 of Rail Express. Free monthly magazine, will be paid for by adverts or so it appears. There is a special ad rate to start, but their normal rates appear higher than others. Is there room for another magazine, even if provided free. Time will only tell if they can keep up a high standard of content.
grahame
Is modelling right for me? Is that a left field or rhetorical article? - bearing in mind it's being given out at a modelling show and it's title. ;-) G. EddieB
Copies available to pick up in Ian Allan shops (or at least Waterloo had some today). First impression is that it's printed on poorer than usual quality paper. Haven't had a chance to look through yet.
Nearholmer
Does it contain an historical article about Bassett Lowke? If it does, I think I know who is, at least partly, behind it. K
EddieB
Does it contain an historical article about Bassett Lowke? If it does, I think I know who is, at least partly, behind it. K Only one about a large three-rail exhibition layout in Brighton - which started from a collection of B-L locos. Is that the one?
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted November 25, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 25, 2016 There were copies on the counter at Gaugemaster in Ford this morning so I suspect they are also available at other retailers as well.
Nearholmer
Eddie Probably not - I know of someone preparing an article about the post-1960s history of the BL brand. Kevin
RMweb Gold Ryde-on-time Posted December 2, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2016 Having got a copy given to me at Warley, I had a flick through last night and it went straight in the bin to be recycled (again?) Both paper and print quality were very poor, like picking up a copy of Practical Model Railways from 35 years ago It made me realise I buy magazines these days to be inspired by layouts and how-to guides - these are only of value to me with good quality paper and stunning photographs
Arthur
Er, it is free, what do you expect in terms of print and paper quality? . Edited December 2, 2016 by Arthur
RMweb Gold Ryde-on-time Posted December 2, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2016 Yes, it's free. But having looked at a copy I really don't see the point of it In other paid magazines, layout articles, modelling guides and reviews are backed up with great photos and would be pointless without them In the free mag there was a review of BR tank engine (I think?), such was the low quality the photos of the new state of the art rtr model, they could have been of a Hornby Doublo one
davefrk
Had a look at one on Wednesday at the club, by it's very nature 'free' it's going to be full of adverts, on cheap paper but for me the content was vaguely familiar too. As someone has said - shades of 'Practical Model Railways' if your memory goes that far back. Thanks but no thanks. Dave Franks

grahame
The paper is quite poor quality, similar to newsprint paper, and the printing corresponding similar, but no worse than any daily newspaper or freebie handout. The content was a little odd - but their target market does seem a little different to the commercial monthlies - and the articles were accordingly also rather tailored, but at least with a wide enough range. Consequently there was very little inspirational modelling or layouts featured that is the fodder of many model rail mags. And as such it would appeal little to those who attended Warley who are, in the main, already dedicated, or at least declared, railway 'modellers'. The downside for me was inference that the steam era and OO/4mm were the only way to go for those considering starting out in the hobby. That didn't really give a feel for the breadth that the hobby can offer which is something that may well help attract beginners. G
peter220950
There was a display box of these at our Club last night and I picked a copy up, I can't say I was particularly impressed, as noted the paper is like newsprint and the feel is very 1980's. Not sure quite who it's aimed at but the mainstream mags are much slicker and I have greater hopes for the new MRE MAG. Time alone will tell if it survives but I can't say I'm holding my breath for the next edition. Peter
edcayton
My subs copy of RM arrived yesterday and I was surprised not to find a copy of this inside. Indeed on a first quick read through I could find no mention of it. Ed
vaughan45
First edition of this magazine is bagged with latest Rail Express. Looks poor compared to Rail Express Modeller supplement, but think it is probably aimed at the beginner or collector market. Very reminiscent of the old Practical Model Railways magazine both in terms of content and production values.
Hroth
Got a copy of RE today and had a look at the freebie. The paper its printed on is dreadful! The feel of the paper was such that I kept looking at my fingertips, expecting to see them smeared with ink. Also, if its supposed to encourage people to take up railway modelling, why review two locos and a wagon that are very much on the expensive side of entry level? And why do we get to page 43 of 68 before there is any editorial mention of Hornby, and a Thomas set at that? I suppose the mag is being sponsored by Bachmann. Krusty
The paper its printed on is dreadful! The feel of the paper was such that I kept looking at my fingertips, expecting to see them smeared with ink. Is it even worse than the recycled toilet paper the likes of Classique Plant & Machinery, Stationary Engine and Tractor and Farming Heritage use these days? Is such a thing possible? Hroth
... recycled toilet paper ... That is wrong in so many ways! I feel that I'm going to have to bleach my brain....
