Pick your brains please on these cheep motors

I got these four on ebay about a year ago for no particular reason at the time I just though I'd try them as at 99p each with free p&p total £3.96p there was no real loss if they were no good if they went in the bin. I forgot all about them until I found I've got a couple of little 0-4-0 locos to build and thought that these might be small enough to fill my needs so I was wondering has any body tried them out yet?

There Mitsumi motors and were sold as 12v, I've had one running today on and off for about two hours in both directions and it seem smooth enough and kept going with out the slightest stutter. I was running it on an old H&M clipper on high resistance and full wave which seems to suit it well with what seems good slow speed control.

 

So what I was wondering apart from has any one tried them if so is there a gear say 40 plus ratio that the fitted worm will mesh with that will go onto a Romford/Markits standard axle that way if one did fail it would take little work to swap the motor out.

 

I put a micrometer on the shaft and it came out as 1.5mm so if there's no gear available that meshes with it is there a worm and gear set that would fit the motors shaft?

 

The motor its self is 15.30mm by 11.90mm and 22.30mm long over the motor and wire contacts.

 

Also while I'm thinking about it is there a fly wheel available that would fit that shaft?

I've bought several types of 12 volt motor, that I haven't tried yet. Now I'm about to start getting into radio control, I wish I'd bought low voltage ones instead! I've got a few 3 and 6 volt ones now too, but there's much less choice.

 

Not much help to you, but I'm interested in the answer too, as it may help me to decide which of my various motors are the most likely to be worth trying!

I have some of these - I think your micrometer may be out, as they are 1.5mm shafts. 

 

Best bet is to pull the worm off using a gear puller. They can then be used in combination with gearboxes. I don't know how well they'd work straight onto the axle, but there are reports of them working well through high level gearboxes. Fixing is a problem though, and some have resorted to soldering them straight to the box.

I would ho on a hunt through your scrap box for a worm wheel which meshes with the worm rather than trying to get a worm off.

 

There are holes in the end plate, most of these motors have threads in these holes for mounting and bosses onto which mountings can be located

 

I have tried similar motors with no real problems, apart from my bodged up flimsy motor mounts causing mesh issues with 50:1 and 60;1 gears. Obviously they won't last long as the brush gear is really flimsy, but if you screw them in place and use two ands keep two as spares....

 

Motor is probably a bit too big round for most 00 gauge steam 0-4-0s, should fit lots of 0-6-0Ts and diesels.   Similar motors I used have very good torque compared to X04 etc and make am real mess of their valve gear if it gets tangled up

The Mitsumi is fitted with a 1.5 mm standard shaft, so takes anything that fits the Mashimas with the same shaft size. Markits worm and gear sets fit direct, or any gearbox that takes a Mashima.

 

Mounting the motor is only a matter of arranging to suit the chassis, if a gearbox is used then solder a bottom plate to the gearbox and add clips to hold the motor in place.

 

Add a brass plate glued with epoxy to the end of the motor, and drill and tap to the Mashima pattern, best solution.....

There are dozens of easy solutions to mounting them, and all can be altered to suit commercial boxes like high level, where adding the new brass end suits all the gear boxes.

 

And adjust that micrometer!

I have fitted one of these motors to a Judith Edge 200HP Brush loco. The motor is every bit as good as a Mashima. The worm can be got off easily by either crushing ithe worm in a vice (it will just fall to bits and come away), or by putting the worm in a vice  and tapping the shaft through it with a suitable drift.

 

The shaft is definitely 1.5mm and the 1.5mm worms supplied in High Level gearboxes fit perfectly.

I have one of those motors fitted into a brass C12, which only ever hauls two coaches, runs very well, but I must fit more pick ups to the C12.

Not for radio control they wouldn't. I'm looking for decent 3 volt motors!

I'm currently trying to upgrade a Hornby 0-4-0 chassis (the cheap one) with one of the Mitsumi motors and a DIY 100:1 gearbox, seems to run well, if a bit noisy, despite having to bodge a 2mm worm onto the 1.5mm shaft using filler... It was a cheap experiment. I got the original worm off using a puller. I want to try adding a flywheel too, to see if I can make the ultimate slow speed shunter out of the 'pocket rocket' chassis.

 

Ultrascale gears seem to be working on similar lines - see here: http://www.ultrascale.uk/node/58  Not sure if they're still going though as their website hasn't been updated in a while and their lead time is currently stated at 8(!) months. They do flywheels though...

 

The only current UK flywheel supplier I could find online is Roxey mouldings but they are expensive for what they are, so you might have more luck with smaller suppliers at an exhibition.

 

I bought a five-pack of these motors for about £3 from some Chinese wholesale website, so now I have to think of some other stuff to make with them... ideas welcome.

You can get tubing to do that. I think K&S tubes are a good fit inside each other. I don't know if there are other makes that do the same. It's something that's still on my shopping list, for when I get round to motor changing.
