meatloaf
Hi has anyone transplanted the TTS decoder and speaker into a 21 pin Bachmann class 20? Ive got an adaptor and wanted to check it would work before i got the decoder. Theres an oblong space for the speaker in the 20 and i think the tts speaker is oblong so should fit ok

delticman
I have fitted one to a Bachmann 8-pin Class 20 and because of the limited space available I used a sugar-cube speaker in the cab. It sounds and performs great but because of the incompatability of the newer TTS decoders with certain controllers the loco will only respond when placed one way round on the track, a problem discussed elsewhere on this forum and currently being investigated by Hornby who are developing a firmware fix for the affected decoders. Geoff.
meatloaf
can you point me to the thread with the discussion? I should have a space for the speaker as its a sound ready 20. The decoder deffo works with my prodigy as its still in the Hornby loco.
meatloaf
AS a follow up to this today i installed the TTS decoder into a 21 pin class 20. The speaker slotted straight into the space provided by Bachmann and the decoder installed using a converter. Sounds great.

That might explain the problem I am having with 2 x Class 31 TTS decoders ( I use Digitrax) Peter Edited November 16, 2017 by Peter Beckett
RAF96
That might explain the problem I am having with 2 x Class 31 TTS decoders ( I use Digitrax) Peter Hornby has resolved the problem and people are reporting on the Hornby forum that they have had quick turn-a-round times for their TTS decoders on return to works and that they work OK now. I suggest you contact Hornby Customer Care to arrange for having them fettled. Rob Edited November 16, 2017 by RAFHAAA96

Did the body fit back ok, the cab end of mine will not go down due to the extra height of the 8 pin plug on top of the adaptor. What did you do to solve this. What did you do to solve this. Often an 8 pin to 21 pin converter makes the decoder plug sit too proud for loco bodies not to sit down and clip on properly. Not just 20s; 37s and 47s are often very tight. My solution is to use a TCS 1358 adapter : http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/131826-fitting-twin-track-sound-to-Bachmann-47/?view=findpost&p=3082465

What did you do to solve this. Ive done 2 now, the first one tne the weathered green one used a Bachmann 8 - 21 pin adapter and it all fitted nicely and the body fitted on no issue at all. The second one i used a lais dcc adaptor and it was a tighter fit as i think the adapter sits higher but the body did go back on I;; try post some pics Edited April 7, 2018 by meatloaf
reevesthecat
I tried to fit a tts decoder into a Bachmann 21 pin Class 20 and couldn't get it to fit -no obvious decoder space? In the end I cut the plugs off and hard wired the damn thing in but works fine anyway. Mark

RMweb Gold MikeParkin65 Posted April 8, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2018 Fitted TTS chips to both the 8 pin and 21 pin version. In both cases Ive wrapped the chip in Kaptan tape then secured i at a slight angle in the nose. Its a snug fit but it does work. I've used a Bachmann 21 to 8 pin convertor for the later model. Both have iphone 6 speakers which are well enough for my loft set up.

See my post http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/97548-alternatives-to-kapton-tape/&do=findComment&comment=3082683 and subsequent replies. It was in fact a TTS Class 20 which overheated after I wrapped it in Kapton tape.
Paul-H
I had a Class 67 TTS get so hot when it was in a loose fitting tube of heat shrink that the heat shrink shrunk so they can and do get quite hot
Chrisr40
The instructions from Hornby recommend one layer of sellotape for insulation. I'm guessing this is thin enough to give some heat escape but rugged enough to prevent a short. Edited April 8, 2018 by Chrisr40
RAF96
I have used slightly shrunk (ends only) tubing but I prefer medical sellotape, used to secure bandages, bits of loose bodywork (human), etc. It is opaque and textured, fairly thick, easy to tear off and sticks well to must things, but is easy to remove and generally reusable. As stated one layer is enough leaving the edges open. I use it for most things inside my locos, holding wires in place, general insulation, etc. Edit - its made by 3Ms and is called transpore. You can get similar but flesh coloured as micropore from the likes of Boots chemist. Rob Edited April 23, 2018 by RAFHAAA96
cravensdmufan
Just fitted a pair of older Bachmann 8 pin 20's with TTS. Delighted with them.
