Bachmann Class 20 164

I've got the option of having one of these bought for me, but have not found any specific info about this model or it's prototype.

I'm not too concerned about the accuracy of the body/chassis when compared to a real loco, but how well does the model run, especially at very slow speed ?

I am interested enough in the prototype to ask where it was based and/or worked. A trawl of the Internet has not provided me with this info.

As always, many thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Renumbered into TOPS 3/74, she had been at Toton since new. Reallocated to Tinsley 1/85 she remained there until withdrawal in 11/87 after 21 years and one month in service, not an especially long career for a main line freight engine from a successful class. Cutting took place at Vic Berry's in July 1988.

The Bachmann class 20s have, in my limited experience (I have three of them; two from the very first batches, and a Waterman Railways liveried one from a later batch) and they have all been faultless performers. As for detail wise, they are certainly better than those models that went before, though not by a quantum leap as some of the predecessors weren't actually too bad. If cost is an issue and you aren't too much of a stickler for the maximum detail authenticity available RTR, then the Hornby (ex Lima) models seem a good model on the outside (though cannot comment on their internal workings)

You neednt be. They catch the look very well, both shape wise and detail wise; for my money, they're far better value than the same manufacturer's 24/25

Havent done a recent comparison but when this has come up before, the consensus has been that even the marginal saving at RRP isnt worth it; the Hornby one would have to be very cheap indeed to make it a better buy than the Bachy

Lovely model. The finish on '164 is particularly good. Shame I'm going to re-number it to D8317 shortly!

Thanks all for your replies. Cost isn't an issue - SWMBO is getting it me for my birthday rolleyes.gif .

I've got a Bachy 25, which I am very impressed with (mechanically - I've got no idea on authenticity), and wondered how good the 20 was - from the replies above it's very good.

So thanks to all, piccys from Polbraze on here once it arrives.

Well, I've had the aforementioned Class 20 purchased for me today - SWMBO even came to the shop (muttering that I'd go ballistic if she spent that much on a handbag....) but I'm not allowed to actually play with (sorry, test it out) until Sunday.

So thanks to all for your input, as I said, pictures soon.

My Bachmann 20's are excellent runners, on par with the other Bachmann BO-BO mechs. I put the chassis of one in a Silver fox 22 shell and it was the best running loco for slow speed control I ever came across.

A bit of muck on it here. Note the dominos a bit higher up than normal.

Same dominoes on the other two photos further up in the thread - never noticed that before.

Is yours at Derby on a Saturday Skeggy?
