RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted September 20, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2012 Interesting to see that the locos have run round. Was there any particular reason for this? Not that I know of, probably a fault of some kind which prevented the 20 leading - light failure, TPWS etc.

The Nth Degree
Great thread, this. I'm researching the ESL at the moment and have a few books on the line. Stark difference in the capacity of the track from back then.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2013 Great thread, this. I'm researching the ESL at the moment and have a few books on the line. Stark difference in the capacity of the track from back then. Indeed, but it's slowly growing again ! Beccles loop is now in use, the RETB being replaced with conventional signalling means there's a (easier) chance that specials could traverse the line again, rumours of a substantial increase in freight for Sizewell C but time will tell on that one. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2013 After 4 months when the train ran once, and I was away on holiday the "coal" resumed. It's handy that this train often accelerates hard and whistles when I photograph / video it ! 05 April 2013 Just South of Saxmundham a footpath leaves the Snape road and makes an idea spot for photography. 37409, Lord Hinton, and 37603 on 6L70, 00:27, Q, Crewe Coal Sidings - Leiston (for Sizewell) - flask (FNA 550028) And so to Saxmundham Junction for the afternoon return working 37603 and 37409, Lord Hinton, on 6M69, 15:42, Q, Leiston (for Sizewell) - Willesden - flask (FNA 550028) The train drops down to the stop board Waiting for the shunter to operate the frame and wave it forward Once the shunter has got the release from Saxmundham, the frame is operated and the connection to the branch reversed, the train is then waved forward. Once clear of the points the train stops, the shunter normalises the points and lets Saxmundham know the frame is finished with. He then climbs onto the train and it drops into Saxmundham station

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted May 1, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 22 April 2013. Finally, after nearly two years of waiting, something other than a 20 or 37 appeared on the flasks (although we've not had any 20s in this batch of trains), a 66 was on it once but I was on holiday that day - typical ! I believe this may be the first 57/0 working to Leiston ? certainly very rare, it had the local enthusiasts frothing away. Kiln Lane, Saxmundham 37402, and 57011 on 6L70, 00:27, Q, Crewe Coal Sidings - Leiston (for Sizewell) - flask (FNA 550022) Saxmundham Junction57011 and 37402 on 6M69, 15:42, Q, Leiston (for Sizewell) - Willesden - flask (FNA 550022) Saxmundham Station Kiln Lane, Saxmundham - the 57 was smoking heavily ! RMweb Premium Peter Beckett Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 1, 2013 Dave, Whats the reason for 2 locos on flask traffic? Peter
RMweb Gold mcowgill Posted May 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2013 I belive it is part of the DRS safety case to provide 2 locos for flask trains, I guess it greatly reduces the risk of a total failure with the possible attendant publicity that might generate. I seem to recall that there was a fair bit of panic in the press quite a few years back when a flask wagon ended up in the dirt at slow speed in Harwich yard. A year or two back I remember getting up early to photograph a pair of 20s just south of Ipswich on the Sizewell train and then went up to see them on the East Suffolk, imagine my surprise to see a class 37 leading the train towards Saxmundham. One of the 20s had failed early on and DRS had arranged for a 37 to be added to the train at Ipswich, for them to do that they must be serious about trying to keep two working locos on the trains. The other interesting thing is that unlike BR, DRS don't use barrier wagons. I wonder if DRS use the inside loco as a barrier? Martin

trisonic
Dave, So far as you know does the policing of these movements come under the aegis of the MoD Police? On at least one of your shots some personnel seem to be located in the trailing cab of the second loco or was that an illusion? Thanks, again, for the great photos of East Anglia - I'm so pleased that you moved there! Best, Pete.

Thanks, again, for the great photos of East Anglia - I'm so pleased that you moved there! Best, Pete. Thanks. Not sure to be honest Pete. the civil police interviewed me after I was spotted taking photos of the flask train at Leiston (!) - a nice guy who wasn't bothered, he had to do it because his boss had told him to. It could be that the MoD asked the civil to do it of course. Racing a stone train to Spooner Row tonight ... I daren't make any jokey comments about calling the car the Interceptor in case some numpty thinks I'm serious. (I've got some shots from Eccles Road and Sluts Hole to post when I've caught up with these)
trisonic
Dave, Yes, you don't want to get on the wrong side of the MoD's, they have more sweeping powers than the civil cops and they are always armed...however the ones I've met were "sound". Thanks, again! Pete.
