RMweb Gold Popular Post beast66606 Posted March 13, 2012 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) This is the start of a series of occasional visits to the remains of the Mid Suffolk Light Railway. Opening in 1904, the line shut in 1952 and due to it's light railway nature, not a lot of the earthworks remain. Laxfield Station The passenger platform, looking out towards Stradbroke The goods platform A dip in the platform, post closure works or the site of a building ? The goods platform, the level crossing (site) is to the right here. The passenger platform, the terminus, with the site of the level crossing, where a siding continued to the mill, beyond. Another part of the platform. Looking out from the station throat, towards Stradbroke and Haughley Junction. Looking back into the station, with a car crossing over the railway (site) where it continued to the mill. Another view of the passenger platform. A view from the site of the level crossing towards the mill, the passenger service terminated behind me but a siding continued to the mill From the other side of the level crossing. RichardS
Very interesting, there's far more old railway stuff left in situ than we often realise. Thanks for sharing these photos. flyingsignalman
Thanks for posting these Dave. Interesting to see what remains after over 60 years of non-railway use.

Here is where the Mid Suffolk crossed the B1116, the Dennington - Stradbroke road. Looking towards Wilby / Stradbroke Looking towards Laxfield A nice adornment to the house (not sure if its anything to do with the railway)
BlackRat
I love threads like these, tho they do tend to tug the emotions. Just where did it all go wrong?

RMweb Premium DLT Posted October 4, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2012 Lovely photos, the "Middy" has been a favourite of mine for quite a while. Thanks very much for sharing them. Dave.T
RMweb Premium cnw6847 Posted October 4, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2012 When the car become widely available and convenient ... sadly and the availability of cheap lorries after WW2. excellent photos, it would be nice if the platforms could be cleaned up. Osgood
I love threads like these, tho they do tend to tug the emotions. Just where did it all go wrong? Around 1908 by all accounts But you make a good point. We're stuck with the car for a while yet as buses don't cut the mustard in rural areas - the MSLR would be a good asset if it had survived, even with the 2 trains per day!! Homologator
Who knows what might have happened if the original plan to link up with the "Southwold Railway" had come to fruition? The Southwold was a going concern, with an upgrade to standard gauge and a link to the GER at Halesworth station, a usable cross county line with junctions to the GER (LNER) at each end. Southwold might have been a mighty container port like Felixstowe! (I doubt it) The "Debenham" branch was about 150 yards (?) short of the plan when the "Bankers" pulled the plug. It seems the banks have always had the "Profit today" attitude, even in 1908! Regards David.

Hornby would have produced a faithful copy of an Adnams beer tank wagon, and the Town Council would be chuntering about the red lights on the container cranes.......
Homologator
Hi Osgood I guess you know the good burghers of Southwold! Be fair, they're not quite as bad as "Aldeburgh"! (I think it's to do with the frequent passing of "Snape Maltings" with so much "High culture" it just rubs off). Regards David.

Faithfully copied from the Fowler works photo - with one small addition made we think after the works photo was taken and before delivery in 1934.

Typeapproval
Hi, I've been catching up on past postings. I'm particularly interested in the whole area around Suffolk and regularly visit MSLR. Only by chance whilst scanning a "well known" auction site I came across the "Hornby Wayside Halt" I believe it to be a reasonable representation of a MSLR station such as the reconstruction at Brockford, Any one know anything about this Hornby item? Sadly Its going to be a while before I get back to Brockford to ask one of the knowledgeable volunteers. Kind Regards David.
Johann Marsbar
It certainly looks like the ex-Mendlesham building in use at Brockford nowadays...... Too close to even be "Inspired by" in Hornby-speak !
