Any more pictures around Salisbury?

After Severn Tunnel to Eastleigh freight trains

Thanks

I think most of my photos taken at Salisbury have been posted on one thread or another,

but this may be a new one, I think it is a Severn Tunnel Junction to Eastleigh Speedlink working, possibly 6O42.

Hi Kenny

I have looked at your flickr pics.

Thanks for posting them, as for many they mean nothing but for some of us they bring back memories of a very different Britain we used to know.

I was a young 20s something when I used to visit STJ/Bedminster/Swansea east dock ect etc in the very early 80s and I was so naive I thought it would last for ever... i did not realise that I was witnessing the end of an era, and the pictures bring back memories. Thanks Steve

Those vans could mean it's a Dinton to Eastleigh MOD working.

Cheers Peter.

Evening all,

I was going through some old prints, looking for something else, but came across these and wondered if they might be of interest?  The sequence is of 60044 at Salisbury on a westbound LPG tank train: the pictures were taken mid-afternoon on a Saturday in early spring 1993 or 1994 (as best I can remember - in one shot there is a very bare tree, so I am fairly confident I have the season right).  If I find the negatives I may be able to narrow the date down a bit better, of course. These pictures were also my justification for acquiring a Hornby 60 somewhat later!  In truth, I was unaware of the working and had just popped down the station to take a few general shots for modelling purposes; the 60 was a surprise bonus - hence the photos are not the greatest in the world!  Anyway, hope they are of use to someone.

Paul, the service in your photos is conveying loaded LPG tanks from Furzebrook to Hallen Marsh.  If taken in spring 1993 then it would be 6V13 1218 (SO) Furzebrook Oil Sdgs to Hallen Marsh LPG Sdg (BP), which after a crew change at Eastleigh was due through Salisbury at 14/48.  I do not have a timetable for spring 1994, but if the train was still running I guess the timings would have been similar.

SED Freightman - Thanks very much indeed: 14.48 sounds spot on, time-wise; just need to narrow down the date a bit more now.  Memory, notoriously fickle, suggests it was near Easter on the basis that the better half was away playing hockey for the weekend, so I was allowed out with the camera!  On another occasion, I recall loitering with intent on platform 4 at about the same time some months later, to be even more surprised by a 58 on the same turn - sadly, no camera on that occasion though.

Going to go and have another rummage now to see what else I can turn up.

Best wishes,

Paul

Don't you go blaming me for that one!   :jester:

Good to see this thread still going.

A few of my pics of the Furzebrook  to Hallen Marsh. When the train first started to run it was booked for a class 47 but as soon as the class 60s arrived they were booked power although a failed class 60 would see other motive power.

Cheers Peter.

Peter,

fantastic - thanks for sharing your wonderful photos of the LPG tanks.  Very atmospheric: You won't be surprised to know that I particularly liked the double cromptons!  It is not a train I saw very often (I had moved away, by and large, by then) but it's very 'model-able', if you have the room (and, of course, a source of LPG tanks).   It never ceases to amaze me when I see all these facinating trains, either on here or on DVDs - where were they when I was hanging around the station, day after day(or so it seems)?

Best wishes,

Paul

I grew up from my teens in Burgess Hill, Sussex so the main excitement was going up to ‘The Bridge’ at Keymer Junction and watching the 3.00pm ex Brighton - Manchester Piccadilly usually headed up by a 47.

Finally, Keymer Box which was sadly demolished...I have a memory of the signalmen once inviting me up and showing me the inside and letting me set the signals for a slam door heading through the Junction...that wouldn’t happen in this day and age!

I remember that at Keymer Junction there was a house with a chimney that arched over sideways over the roof to join the main chimney stack. It was quite unusual and I always looked out for it when travelling that way to Seaford in the late 1970s and 1980s. It’s long gone now.

Thanks for posting these great photos.

Cheers

Crikey. Those scenes bring back memories, although when I arrived at Brighton in '87, Three Bridges had taken over everything. Well, I say everything... in the second photo, above the cab rooves, are the windows of my office (I was Station Manager, but we had two, on shifts, go figure, until my oppo went long term sick), but more relevant, underneath us, was the old station supervisors' office, in which we had placed an ex-Brighton Signal Box supervisor, possibly the grumpiest bloke I have ever met, but he was needed to be the Regulator for all the Brighton moves every weekday morning, because Three Bridges simply could not cope. He was well good too, even if saying Good Morning was against his religion.

He was still there when I moved on to the ER at the Cross, but must have retired or died from a coronary at some point (possibly both) fairly soon after. Goodness knows how they coped then.

Thanks Paul,

I do like the old Cromptons myself. I know a Few Eastleigh drivers that said you couldn't beat a Pair of 33s.

Here are a few more.

Cheers Peter.

Thanks Pete.  More nice photos - loving the slim jim in the snow - very atmospheric.

Best wishes,

Paul

Evening all,

another couple from me.  First up, Bill and Ben, the Sandite men...um, or rather, former Cl121s, taken on the same afternoon as my previous shots of the 60 and LPG tanks.  The name 'Bill' is clearly visible at the bottom of the centre windscreen:

Followed by some, then relatively new, 159s.  Love 'em or hate 'em, they were part of the landscape at the time.

post-10582-0-84794000-1545001100_thumb.jpg

Finally, an undated view of S15 '828' and what I am fairly confident is 'Taw Valley', entering Salisbury from the east.

Did you notice the NSE Spoon behind it?

Griff

Yup - parked extremely close to what appears to be a TC (no way to tell whether or not they are actually coupled up).  Did the shove duffs work TCs as loco-hauled stock in the same way that the 50s used to, I wonder?  Never saw it myself but it would be interesting to know - all part of the jigsaw.

It's actually a VEP rather than a TC

From memory the 47/7 was hauling the VEP I think it had failed due to the snow etc. Could also have been an empty stock working.

I don't remember seeing a class 47 hauling a TC but  i am sure it happen'd as Paul said the class 50 did work with TCs

Cheers Peter.
