Thanks Rivercider,

the hoppers are indeed 'Tarmac' (I have attached a further photo of the same train).  I don't recall them being quite so common in our area though  - Yeoman ( - who needs that much instant mashed potato?!) and ARC were the more usual fare.  I also found a further snap of a 47 approaching from the east on empty Yeomans with a couple of (former salt traffic) interlopers amongst them - snap of one of said wagons also included: notice the rather jaunty checked shirt of the gentleman in the right-hand seat of the loco!

Thanks also for confirming my thoughts on the 'Dinton Freight'.   We used to call it that locally but I have not heard it called by that name in many a year, though that's probably because I live in Lincolnshire now!  I did find another shot of what appears to be the same working (47145 again) with some OCAs in tow, all of which have their loads shrouded in tarpaulins.

Sorry about the overall quality of the images: I have tweaked them as much as my limited abilities allow but the limitations of old slides and cheap film  won't allow me to do much more.  Hope these further pics are of interest - they have certainly made me smile.

Best wishes,

Paul

Some great pictures here chaps, all bringing back some good memories of the week's holiday I took each summer in the mid 80s and using the Southern Region area rover tickets to bash 33s, 47s and 50s (and 73s when the Reps were being stripped of bits for the 442s) around SW Section lines. I'd almost forgotten about 25 181's stay at Eastleigh. I have a similar picture of it which I think I  must have taken on an open day.

I'll try to dig out some of my old pics and get them scanned, I'm sure there's some of unusual workings.

Regards,

Patrick

Paul I was trying to find details of when the Salisbury East frame was sent to the NRM but I can't find any information on it (did it actually go I'm wondering?). The reason why I was wondering is the state of the east box, partly dismantled, perhaps this would provide a clue to the year?

Lovely photos BTW  :sungum:

PS JSW has just finished a PGA salt wagon in this condition. Details on his blog.

Rob,

I am sure I have seen parts of the frame in the NRM ( - and quite some time ago).  I have the South Western Circle recent volume on pneumatic signalling on the Southern, so I will have a dig in there and see if it turns anything up.  In one of the photos you can see a couple of guys working in the box, presumably dismantling it.

Nice to see all the woodwork still in BR Southern Region colours as well.

Best wishes,

Paul

A couple more I found earlier: D200, west of Salisbury (just before Skew Bridge) on 31 August 1987; and then a couple from the Woking 150 event (29-30 May 1988), though I can't now remember which day I went!

Kind Regards,

Paul

Hi

Been sorting through my photos yesterday and picked out a couple that may be of interest.

The only photo I have taken on the only time I went down "the Drain" S59 at Bank 20/5/87

Although I had seen various stores and departmental units at depots around the southern this was the only time I photographed one moving, Unit 009 at Clapham 27/10/86

When Prince Charles and Lady Diana got married I was on holiday in Portsmouth with my parents, after letting my mum watch the wedding Dad and I hot footed it across to Eastleigh to see 73142 come through on the special.

Evening all,

I have been having a canter down memory lane this evening as I experiment with my new scanner ( - it's only taken me 7 months or so to work up enough courage to get it out of the box and fiddle about with it: who needs instructions after all?!  Ah...)  Thought the attached might be of interest: all were taken at Salisbury during the summer of either '83 or '84, though sadly I cannot be more precise ( - perhaps somebody on here might be able to provide more info?) Wish I had thought to make some detailed records at the time.  Wagons were a lot more interesting then!

Best wishes,

Paul

Great photos.

Driver Bill Turner and secondman Paul Stoneman worked the Royal Wedding special. A crowd of us watched it depart from Waterloo.

Bill Turner retired soon after and sadly didn't live to enjoy a happy retirement. He died of cancer not long after, having never had a day off sick in his life.

Hi all

A few more scans that may(or may not) be of interest all taken at the Basingstoke open day in September 1987.

Ian

What a fantastic event it was too, another memory of the Gerald Daniels era...the only manager I ever heard my Dad speak enthusiastically about unprompted.

I've got a fairly busy weekend lined up (building sheds and consuming ale of course...) but will try and scan some prints before its over...the railshow cavalcade from in front of the fence, a bit of steam from the footplate of 53809 at Ludgershall and a trip on D200 for refuelling at Eastleigh MPD if I can find the time and prints :slow:

A few for the history buffs, from 1986/87 ish (sorry, lost the dates).

What the Dickens? "Mr Pickwick's Special" from London to Rochester for the Dickens Festival, 12-car 4-CEP formation at Sole Street, with 411502 leading:

Then, the preserved 4-SUB + 2-BIL combination of 4732 + 2090 doing shuttles between Medway (either Rochester or Gillingham, can't remember which) and Gravesend for the "Gravesham Edwardian Fair". Note the tail lamp hanging from the coupling hook.

Photos at Rochester* (from the bridge), Strood, Higham** and Gravesend:

A few from the Basingstoke Railshow of September 1987 as promised.

At present I have been unable to find the prints of 53809 at Ludgershall, or any exterior shots of D200 on Eastleigh depot but hopefully they'll turn up in "the wrong envelope" soon.

Basingstoke driver Geoff Beattie was at D200's controls during the railshow weekend, familiar with class 40's from his earlier days at Carnforth.

Pictured here on Eastleigh depot on a trip for fuel, he was kind enough to have stopped very briefly at the end of Eastleigh station to pick us up for a ride around the loop at the back of the works then onto the depot.

Evening all,

another couple from me this evening.  Found a couple of shots of 75069 and 34027 'Taw Valley', departing Salisbury Eastwards in the early evening on the return leg of a test run to Exeter in anticipation of further runs for the paying public in the following weeks.  A quick internet search reminded me that the date was the 10th June 1992 - Eek! how long ago?!!!!!!  Still, looking on the bright side, a light pacific and NSE-liveried coaches - a winning combination in my book!

Best wishes,

Paul

A few more from me...all around the Brighton area.

73111 makes light work of a single Yugoslavian Ferry van as it passes through Cooksbridge station north of Lewes. It is believed to be loaded with furniture and enroute to the Remploy factory at Newhaven. Thanks to SEMG Yahoo group and Paul Bartlett for the info on the wagon.

One of my duties as a BR Relief Clerical Officer at Brighton included the switchboard.....not my favourite job. On this day I brought my camera with me and ended up taking photos of the signal box on fire, after having taken the 999 call from the traffic regulator and connecting him to the emergency operator.

Restricted working in and out of Brighton station remained in operation for several days.
The stock in the foreground in Montpelier sidings is that of the overnight mail and newspaper train.
Photo taken 1/10/84.

p582274013-4.jpg

An unidentified class 33/0 heads south at Patcham with the Salfords to Fawley empty tank train. there wasn't much freight traffic at the south end of the Brighton line and this was an added bonus as this train didn't normally run this way.

Slide dated 9/8/80.

p598443367-4.jpg

47406 'Railriders' leaves Brighton with the afternoon train from Brighton to Liverpool Lime Street.

Slide dated summer 1986.

p47914797-4.jpg

An unidentified class 47 passes Lovers Walk Depot with the morning Brighton to Manchester service. Top Yard signal box still in situ on the left was later removed to the Bluebell Railway.

Slide dated 1981.

A few more taken at Salfords in Oct 1994 - I have always thought that the 59 had come from Crawley New Yard ?? or is this an Ardingly train ?.

Interesting to note that one of the Tank wagon has Gatwick stencilled on the lower part of the tank - I often used to see wagons under repair in the yard at Salfords by Procar, I think these were there for that reason.

Cheers, Bob.

Crawley New Yard....Ardingly doesn't have manual unloading for box wagons.. The train is always Hoppers.

It could be one from Purley as I think for a time the empties ran via Three Bridges.

Happy Easter and few more from my galleries

p203641322-4.jpg

4SUB 4728 approaches Sutton station, it appears to be missing its second headcode stencil.

p1066139032-4.jpg

Low winter sun glints off 47487 and train as it accelerates through Preston Park station with the 0920 Brighton to Manchester Piccadilly. The roof of the signalbox can be seen above the second coach.
Slide dated winter 1980.

p898941422-4.jpg

47637 'Springburn' in Scotrail livery makes a rare appearance on the south coast whilst working the SO Brighton to Penzance service. Here the train is seen crossing the River Adur at Shoreham by Sea

Slide undated but post June 1987 when it was named.

p975442635-4.jpg

73101 was renumbered 73100 and named 'Brighton Evening Argus' to commemorate the papers 100th birthday. Considering the paper never had a good thing to say about BR or the railways in general ( and still doesn't ) this was rather an odd move. The loco was known locally as BEA.

Slide dated 31/12/80 during the naming ceremony at Brighton station.

Apologies if any of these have been posted earlier.
