eastwestdivide
The first Godstone photo - too late for a Tadpole unit (and only one narrow coach), and also after the Hastings electrification, so was the Hastings power car deputising for a while? RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 23, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2015 The first Godstone photo - too late for a Tadpole unit (and only one narrow coach), and also after the Hastings electrification, so was the Hastings power car deputising for a while? They certainly did use some hastings short sets and power cars on this and the Oxted lines after electrification of the Hastings route. I have more photos of these mixed formations somewhere. Guest
Around 1984-85, a failed Peak was snapped in the loco sidings at Norwood. Not by me, although I was working there at the time and had a good climb all over it as I'd never seen one before. The pic has appeared on RMWeb, but I'm 99% sure it wasn't in this thread. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful. Thanks, Pete. Found the original. Dated June 1985. Not unheard of on this part of the Southern, but certainly unusual. Reckon it must have failed on a footex or a railtour. http://www.derbysulzers.com/45115norwood85.jpg

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2015 A few more photos of hybrid Hasting units on the Oxted lines in 1986 A few at Riddlesdown viaduct. This was a favourite spot of mine (at the footpath crossing) recording the loco hauled and DEMU's around that time. lmsforever
Surprised to see the Woldingham picture as I was at the school adjacent to the station two weeks ago a very nice part of the world .
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2015 Surprised to see the Woldingham picture as I was at the school adjacent to the station two weeks ago a very nice part of the world . My parents place is in Warlingham, not too far from there. I used to commute out of Warlingham station on and off for a number of years on the Thumpers. I particularly remember the 33 and mk1 stock coming out of London Bridge on a Winters evening. The train would normally slow down near New Cross Gate and all the lights would dim. If only we had ipads back then as could continue to read.

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 31, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 31, 2015 Continuing on with loco hauled services on the Oxted lines here are a few shots at Selsdon in 1983, I think on the last day of service at this station along with Coombe Road and BIngham Road. First off, from the old platforms but as they were not fenced off or no signs to say otherwise, access was fine back then. And then from the third rail platforms

Interesting (scary ?) how relative these things are - 34 years ago - when you think about how it would have looked in 1947 ??
kintbury jon
I assume the section from Selsdon to Sanderstead was de-electrified before the line to East Grinstead was electrified a few years later?
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 31, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 31, 2015 I assume the section from Selsdon to Sanderstead was de-electrified before the line to East Grinstead was electrified a few years later? They electrified the bit to South Croydon not long after the Selsdon to Woodside line shut and started running EPBs off the mainline to terminate at Sanderstead some years before the line to East Grinstead was electrified. roythebus
As part of the Woodside-Selsdon closure, BR, as was practice in those days, spent a fortune installing new semaphores, new station signs etc at the intermediate stations; cancelled trains due to "staff shortage" etc just to jack up the running costs of the line to make the economic case for closure. I know, I was a driver at Addiscombe at the time! However, Tramlink provides a much better service than BR ever did in that area.
