Re 4728 at Sutton, I don't think a stencil can be "missing". IIRC, the double figures were single stencils so the correct number (presumably 91 (LB) or 92 (Vic) for Epsom Downs) couldn't be found by the driver. Note also the old depot code - Selhurst was SHST.

The full complement of stencils in the cab was one each of '0' - '9' and a black plate. Each digit was a separate stencil, to make up a headcode two of the plates would be mounted in the stencil 'cradle'. The black plate would be used in the event of a single digit headcode being needed, as the complete area of the opal glass had to be covered in the leading direction.

The provision of only a single quantity of each digit is why the headcodes for services provided by the DEMUs were the ones where each digit was the same, viz 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 77, 88 (but not 66 and 99 as they could be made up by reversing the '6' or '9' stencils). In theory the train could not run if the correct headcode could not be displayed and you can't display '22' on a 4SUB, therefore it couldn't run that service...

As the train appears to be accessing the Epsom Downs platform, the assertion of a missing stencil could be correct, as 91/92/94/96 were certainly the Epsom Downs routes from LB (91) and Vic (92/94/96, by various routes). If one of the 1/2/4/6 stencils went missing (and they could, and did, drop out of the stencil 'cradle' while in motion) then the driver would have had to use the black plate to complete the stencil.

Might not be 80s, but thanks for the pic of the SUB at Sutton. Not a location that appears too often in pictures. Shame, as I can't think of too may other suburban 5 way junction stations. Sutton is a fascinating subject in its own right.

There are another couple of slides of 4SUBs at Sutton on my website from the same unknown photographer.

Great pictures, thanks.  Trying to date the picture above.  The 'car checkers' hut is in place next to Archcliff box, Bulwark is full of 45 tonne Oil Pots, mide to late 80s perhaps?

I was never very good at recording the dates. But it is post 1983 from the car I was driving at the time.

West St Leonards? I always thought it was St Leonards West.

It appears that it has always been 'West St. Leonards', presumably to avoid confusion with the nearby LBSCR 'St. Leonards West Marina' Station...

Was called that by the SER when built in 1887 and appears with that name on an RCH map in 1914.

For some reason I never really took many cl50 photos :0(

Anyway I do have this one at Exeter in May 1991, hopefully not too new for the thread!

Here it is in 1984, together with the wonderfully-named Bopeep Junction signalbox:

Not a bad prototype for a layout maybe - tunnel, semaphores, signalbox, junction, station only on one route, depot and through trains on the other, diesels and electrics...

It does a bit, but it was the old carriage washer, since replaced with a shiny new one:

Its Fratton yard, and its the current washing plant. Everything from the depot that leaves goes through. I pass Fratton everyday to get to work.

I'm looking for pictures around Eastleigh in about 1987

I did have some of my own but cant find my photo albums :(

I would have a few from that period I will dig some out. Some my already be on my Flickr site. The link is below, My Brother and John Dedman can be found there too, they both have pics of Eastleigh from about that time.

Around 1984-85, a failed Peak was snapped in the loco sidings at Norwood. Not by me, although I was working there at the time and had a good climb all over it as I'd never seen one before. The pic has appeared on RMWeb, but I'm 99% sure it wasn't in this thread. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful. Thanks, Pete.
