Weathering of all sorts of locos and stock

Blue 47

Been a long time since I added anything to the blog on weathering so here is a recent commission - A blue Western Region Class 47 - Amazon.   The Heljan 47 is big and very heavy. Weathering something this size needs good reference colour photos - and I have a number of these but not of this loco.   First up Three Quarter side on view... As usual - top down - water and black ink, then bottom up brown ink and water mix as a base coat followed by powders once the ink is dry to the touch.   S

A dirty Pacific - cleaned!

Some of you may have seen this     well its back with me to turn it into a loco which has been hand cleaned and then I need to fit sound to it. Well first attempt at a "cleaned" loco from one which I have weathered..     and a bit more detail - smokebox and boiler     and now the cab and tender     this takes a bit of doing but due to the water based nature of the weathering doesn't require any abrasives or T cut type applications - just water and some cotton buds   Hope it

A dirty G2 and a dirty Jubilee - "cleaned"

Been busy today weathering some locos before umpiring a 90 over county junior game... The first is an EM Brassmaster LNWR G2 - a gentle wash of ink and odd bits of powder to get a slightly used look   First a clean loco...   and now slightly "used"     and then a funny one - take a dirty loco     then make it look like its been "cleaned"     this is very much a try it and see so does anyone have any comments on the finish??   attempt 2 to publish all the pictures went stra

21Ton Hoppers - clean and part weathered

Looking at some other blogs I noted that people are unaware of some add on items from Judith Edge Kits - in particular some bits to improve the humble Airfix/Mainline/Dapol 21T hopper.   I have two ready for weathering.. well one is part weathered so here we go:     you get an etch with the handrail stanchions and the door operation levers.   Carve off the plastic handrails and then add the etched bits with some brass wire! I'll finish the weathering and put that up in the blog   enj

A few vans.. and a Type 2 now weathered!

I have, over the years weathered a number of vans.   This weeks work is to complete a Sulzer Type 2 (Class 24 - I have fitted a Legomanbiffo sound chip to), then the ex GC locos seen in earlier bits of the blog, and finally some added detail to some vans. I will post the original view here today then fill in photos of the vehicles when weathered.   First up the Green 24     and now with weathering...     then the vans..

Some ex Great Central locos

I always have work to do - a lot of my own stock has never been completely weathered so I am showing some"before" shots here of partly weathered locos built by my late Father - all of these have appeared on Herculaneum Dock on occasion..First up an N5.     I intend to re-weather this as its not been finished.   Then Earl Roberts of Kandahar. also due for some attention to the running gear weathering     and finally     again some work required on running gear etc   They are al

Iron Ore! updated with Dirty wagon shots!

Over the years i have acquired and built a number of iron ore wagons. These range from modified Airfix 16T minerals, through Parkside fitted kits to Bachmann unfitted examples.   I am now starting to weather the fleet as it appears we can run them on Chapel en le Frith - a layout under construction by Leeds MRS.   The Bachmann vehicles are a bit "chunky" so a dollop of weathering does help. This time I used a mix of sepia ink and water followed by adding chunks of ore dirt/rust adding powder

Tank Wagons

I am part way through weathering some of my own tank wagons - an Airfix Class B and a Mainline 14t Class B   Here they are together before weathering:   unlike Mike Delamar I haven't changed the walkways or ladders on the Airfix kit and I forgot to paint over the restraining bars on the Mainline vehicle - I will come back to that in a later blog.   So a general wash of ink and water followed by powder - then running wet ink down from the filler and adding dry powder to this results in:

A Hunslet!

A day off from my umpiring duties means that I have time to do some weathering.   This is a Commission and is a Judith Edge 50T Hunslet built and painted by Mike Edge.   Here it is clean:     and then weathered...     Notice the diesel stains around the diesel level indicator....   more wagons to come.....     Enjoy!

Sometimes you win .. sometimes you don't

One of the best things about using the ink and water technique for base coat weathering is I can do it most of the year. As mentioned in one of my earlier blogs I had a problem with it being too warm to get the ink to flow where I wanted it to. On reflection it wasn't the temperature it was the humidity ( or lack of it) No problems this week - just a bit dark to take photos.   I will try and get some shots of some coaches currently being weathered as well as a couple of diesels. For these I us

A Duchess or two...

Finished my last two Duchesses for this week.   First up a blue nameplated Princess Alice. - the blue background is due to it being a Polmadie locomotive.     and then a nice Maroon Duchess with some added patches as per a lovely colour photograph I have of a maroon Duchess..     and a quick pic of the two side by side - my apologies but I haven't (yet) got any EM track to stand them on.

Wagons, loco and a Mk 1 coach weathered for me!

Just for a change here are some of my own stock weathered for use on a variety of layouts.   First up a Hornby Black 5 which was part modified by Tim of RMWeb at Doncaster   The modification at the front end make a big difference - thanks Tim!   and now a dirty Mark 1 Corridor First. Nice looking coach just a bit plastic shiny out of the box so a bit of brown ink/water and brown coloured powder up to the tumblehome and black in/water and black powders     and finally a couple of ph

UPDATED clean and dirty passenger Locomotives for an EM LM layout

I have never done "before and after shots of locos I have weathered - but I am impressed by Davey4270's shots of the O gauge Wagons I have weathered for him. So having received a number of locos from Mike Edge to weather here are some before shots - I will add the weathered versions over the coming days. First up a Jubilee by Mike - all I can say is what a beauty!     and now a weathered one..     next a Duchess - Princess Alice complete with Scottish Region nameplate..     and C

Too warm to weather

Not very often this happens but the ink has been drying too quickly today to allow me to work it into the nooks and crannies it needs to be - so I have been readying some mineral wagons for weathering. I bought these over a number of years ready built and they are a mix of Airfix and Parkside kits. Once complete they can be used on Herculaneum Dock or Cwmafon.   Using Model master decals numbering 16T and 24.5T BR mineral wagons is so easy compared to days of yore. They will be weathered insid

A little bit of weathering...

I have been contemplating a blog of sorts to keep up with weathering I do for both myself and a number of clients across Europe. The latest item to be weathered is a Heljan ) gauge Hymek - as it comes its a nice shiny BR Blue and it is very, very heavy (3.5kg) which makes handling a trifle difficult!         Using Indian ink and water as a "undercoat" I washed all over the loco including underframes. (Black ink for the roof and sides, brown for the underframes and bogies) When dry I added
