Victoria Bridge: Real world inspiration and a Shapeways shopping list..

Last weekend (with those bright, Mediterranean skies back again just when I had dulled down my miniature version!) I took a stroll along the banks of the Severn, to take a closer look at Victoria Bridge paying particular attention to the trees that frame the bridge. I will hopefully soon have the printed replacement bridge face installed (more of which later) so it is important to get the foliage right... a few snaps from the expedition:

One thing that will be interesting to replicate is the parasitic greenery enveloping the trunks, this will be one of those little details that will, if I can get it right, make the scene look just right.. not something I have seen on a layout, or have I just managed not to notice?

And a few pics of a lovely noisy interruption among the placid flora and fauna. In the context of my N gauge diorama.. what we see here is a full on attack from Dapol marketing!!!

Suitably inspired, I spent a while this weekend, under grey, chilly skies, on Sketchup finalising the designs for my 'new' bridge. It has been a long time in the making, and I have had a number of puzzling uploading problems with a number of models this one included, fingers crossed this time....

Along with the bridge, I have also ordered a printed core for the excellent Ultima Models GWR inspection saloon kit, with a full interior, and at long last a T gauge Bubble Car hidden among the details printed for the bridge!

Hopefully more news soon-ish!

What a brilliant entry, Will. Inspirational, informative, creative and lavishly illustrated.

You do like that bridge, don't you? :-) But I can see why, it is so nicely balanced and beautifully located.

It will be interesting to see the green stuff on the trees modelled. There's one thing you can't do in CAD! :-)

I think it will probably be a paste of PVA and a mixture of green flock bits and pieces, to create a layer of green around the tree, followed by some static grass 'branches', with a final layer of leafy greenery... I'll keep you all posted!

Doh.. back to the drawing board with the bridge.. I left some little protrusions which had been the base of the fence along the top, which have failed the pre-print checks. Easily sorted out though.
