BEATTIE 0298 TANK (3)

I have done some more to this, or I should really say I have done the same bit again.

I remade the cylinders scaling from photos, and my poor drawings. The seem much better and look better with the body. I still have problems with the axle box lining up with the front axle. I do believe the crosshead is too high, and the slide bars are slightly heavy. I have decided to leave these as I feel it will make a mess of them reducing their size.

First and second photos shows the new cylinders, and the third shows the first attemp.

I then soldered the connecting rods to a piece of 020" nickle silver sheet as the kit ones are a bit thin. These then cleaned up nicely. This is where we find the crank pin throw on the wheels with the kit are a scale 12", not a scale 10". So what to do the slide bars are not long enough to take the extra throw. After a lot of pondering I decide to redrill the crank pin holes. I thought it was worth a try as if it worked I will have a Well tank that works if not I will need new wheels and the long wait to get them.

Well I made a jig and drilled one wheel. For some reason I did not take a photo of the little jig I made. I will do this in another post now.

This worked well but the two holes are very close, but using a 10BA screw and a threaded crankpin it all locked up nice and tight. As you see from the photo front dead centre is all a bit on the tight side, some careful filing to stop it knocking on the rear gland. "It's tight"

The next picture shows the chassis looking down between the crossheads, slide bars and front wheels. These are washered to stop side play as there is not a lot of room for movement.

The we go on to show the side view with coupling and conecting rods fitted. The moving of the crankpins worked the wheels remained nicely quartered, and we can get the crossheads moving without jamming everything up. I think there is just a little more fettling required for altra smooth running. I think it is time to trial fit a motor and gearset.

Thats all for this time apart from thoughts on painting. I am hoping that someone wil know, I ought to get my Bradleys here. I model circa the first few years of the thirties. I want to paint this loco black lined green. There is a photo on the net of one of the preserved ones painted in this livery and very smart it looks too. Was it a livery they wore at this time? Or do I need to invoke rule one, it being my railway?

In the "Southern Way" series of books, there is one entitled "Scrapping The Southern", showing a partly dismantled 30586. Quite revealing.
