Three lovelies

At the recent Manchester show I managed to pick up these three kit-built wagons from a second hand stall at an absolute steal of a tenner each. The LMS van is a Slaters kit, I think, while the two white metal Southern banana vans have the feel of David Geen kits. All have been built and painted to a high standard (better and neater than my batting average) and fitted with 3-link couplings. There was some damage to the roof of one of the banana vans, but I repaired it with plastic filler and then sanded and repainted. I haven't yet tried to identify the prototypes of the models but I imagine it will be obvious enough to the more knowledgeable.

I'm delighted with these models and happy to put them into service during my pre-nationalisation running sessions.

The 'nana vans are Dia 1478 under order A812 of 27/3/34. Built at Ashford 8-12/1935 and fitted with steam heating.

Just found my ABS instruction sheet 017 for the Banana van where it states that 200 were built for the Southampton Docks traffic. Model livery -Body sides and ends inc buffer beams Humbrol HR 112 Stone, Solebars HR142 Brown and Brakegear etc Black. Roof was in SR days White. Lettering in Venetian Red.

If you're running a banana train, remember that the SR borrowed 200 or so vans from the LNER during the 1930s - and managed to lose a fair few in a fire somewhere. There's a bit of variety for you.

Thank you for the information all, most informative and welcome.

I won't be running a banana train as such as I don't have the fiddle yard capacity but they'll be marshalled into normal goods trains. Mainly I didn't think they deserved to go unpurchased.

Ta, Mikkel - I had a suspicion it might be as I made a similar Midland goods van from a Slaters kit last year and it had the same feel - mind you I was wrong about the banana vans being Geen based on the same logic.

There were some other goodies in that bargain tray at the exhibition but I wouldn't have fancied my chances of getting more than three of them home in one piece, given that they had had to be wrapped in tissue and then carefully placed in my rucksack.
